I always re-used mine. Never had an issue. I cleaned them up with a wire brush (gently) though.

Some VW GTi seats have a flannel/plaid center.... May be a similar enough match....

Agreed, my 87 did this with a bad alternator.

I would think the easiest answer would be to add something to the foam that has been getting worn away. Basically re-protect that rubber line.

Its your car, only you can really make the decision. I finally decided to send my 87 GL to Subaru heaven (though a GL wagon is NOT rare by any means) after problem after problem kept coming up. I was rust free, but 321,800 miles had taken their toll and I had a brake fluid leak, the parking brake liked to stick, I ate exhaust gaskets, it wouldn't hold an alignment because all the suspension bushings were shot. When the engine finally had something let go internally I made the choice to part it out. It would have been thousands of dollars more to keep it running. As it was I put over $8000 into it over its life including the price of the car (I bought it for $2700 back when it was actually worth that much). In my opinion the only thing that can REALLY kill a car are rust and a bad collision. Since my GL was common and I had a Baja coming my way anyway, I chose to let the GL go.

I think the steering may be hard to find. Ditch the air suspension and put on normal coil over struts. If the diff is locked its probably the center diff (you are referring to the diff lock switch right??) Hopefully its just bound up and jacking up the car will free it. Its also a flat 6, not a V6 (its pretty much 1 and a half EA82's)

I would NEVER use an EA82T for a daily driver.... ok for a toy / weekend car, but not really reliable enough for a daily driver. Expect to do head gaskets and any / all hoses/seals under the hood unless they have been done already. The timing belts like to break prematurely. Won't hurt the car, but you will be left stranded unless you feel like changing them on the side of the road. I have had plenty of EA82's and love them... but they really aren't reliable. The non-turbos are more reliable (preferably an 88-94 GL/GL-10/Loyale), or better yet a 90+ Legacy or 93+ Impreza would be most reliable on the cheap.

Make sure to do the water pump and tensioners while you are in there. Since with any luck you won't be in there for another 105K

I always liked the 1996 Impreza Outback Sport.... one of the few years with 4 wheel disk brakes. (my mom still has one that she bought new) and the bulletproof EJ22

I agree with Milesfox... use this opportunity to swap to rear disk brakes. You can find them on the rear of an 85-90's turbos. If you are 4WD, get them off a 4WD.

You could also get an SJR Lift. He makes good stuff too.

Not sure how much of a splash guard there is, but if there is room under the hood, stash it in the engine bay somewhere on one of the frame rails. (where you could reach it from crawling under the front of the car) If it has a full plastic splash guard under there that won't work though.

nasioc.com may have more opinions on what to do to it. USMB is a little more old school. Most of our cars here have under 100 HP new.

Check the rubber circle "thingy" that bolts between the steering rack and the steer shaft. Odds are its rotted out. You can get a polyurathane replacement for a VW bug (old school one) and it fits. It did on my lifted 82 Brat anyway...

My 82 brats both had the later style orange dash. And cyclops light.

Stock is in the 64-90 area.... should be interesting to see what they do after drivetrain loss and lots and lots of miles.

If they bring it I will seriously consider buying one. I had heard rumors the techs were getting hybrid and disel training (and we already got the hybrid)....

Looks decent, but at minimum the right front fender has been replaced. Not saying it was wrecked (maybe it just had a little dent), but its something to examine.
