YABHG (Yet Another Blown Head Gasket)
nipper replied to theidealist's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHead gasket wear is an erosion. Over time it will get worse. Winter is coming, so it is not a repair you want to do in the first cold snap. At 138K the engine is worth saving. First step is to do a compression test, both dry and wet. That will give us an idea on what condition the rings are in. I wouldnt drive the car like this for very long, as all it takes is one quick overheat to ruin the engine. nipper

Toyotaru convertable?
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCome out from the darkness..... the light won't hurt you. YEs they have been for a few years now. This has been an on again off again on again forcryingoutloudmakeupyourminds on again thing. Also toyota owns part of subaru. They make toyotas on unused production space the factory along side subarus. Toyota gets production space and subaru gets technology. Subaru isnt sold on this yet as they can't see how they can squeeze AWD in it, and are very reluctant to sell a RWD car. This may be the new Celica. nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXReplace the radiator cap. The cap is not functioing properly. As the car cools down, it makes a vacume inside the cooling system. This vacume is used to draw in coolant from the overflow tank. Your cap is not allowing this to happen. nipper

Blu has cancer
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXUpdateL Took off the stripe today (and broke a freaking trim peice in the porcess). Blu has super minimal cancer under the strips. So little that mabe a tablespoon of body puter and treatment will fix it. in this case the bubbling made it look far wors then it actually is. Now i need that dumb trim peice. nipper

changing antifreeze
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAfter the flush. Sheesh deionized water has been around as long as there have been steam irons. It's just demineralized water. Use the 50/50 premix. nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou may have just answered the question. A weak altenator will throw off everything. you may not be actually be seeing the real temp, but a higher temp due to a lower voltage output (meaning not a thing wrong with the cooling system). What is the alt output at idle with everything off, fans on, and at 1800 RPM with everything on? nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat heat range plugs are you running? Are all the emissions controls functioning? What is the output of the altenator? Put a meat themrometer in the radiator coolant after the T-stat has opened and let us know the temp of the coolant. Are the fans running at the proper speed? What happens when you tun the AC on?

Head gasket repair in a bottle
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthats only for external leaks, not internal leaks. depends upon the year and mileage of your subaru. If it is under 100K no as we may be able to get sooby to pay for all or part of the repair, if it is over 100K then it wont do a thing. nipper

Head gasket repair in a bottle
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually they have newer versions that claim to repair leaks into the combustion chamber. Thats what i thought he was talking about as that is the usual failure mode for soobys. The external leak i just consider a nusance. nipper

changing antifreeze
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXKey to avoiding air is simple (ramps arent needed but it helps). Always have the car running when you add coolant. Pour in the coolant SLOWLY. STop when full, wait for the thermostat to open, then SLOWLY add more. Put the cap back on, close the bleeder, drive around the block, let car cool off. Repeat if needed. And always watch the temp gauge when doing this. People get air in the system cause they rush this part (any car can get air, some more prone then others). nipper

changing antifreeze
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhy not just use the drain in the radiator. You do use deionized water afet the garden hose flush or a 50/50 premix i hope. Coolant only really needs to be replaced every 3/36K nipper

Head gasket repair in a bottle
nipper replied to Rooster2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWe had one use it in another board. It lasted a month. headgaskets are the most complicated gasket in the car with the hardest job. On one side is 15,000-20,000 psi, on the other side is 10-80 psi oil, 14psi coolant, and 28in hg. Throw in temps of zero degrees or lower, water temp of 200 degrees, and 4-5000 degrees F, it is not something that a jar can fix. Also since he has to take his car apart now, i am curious to see if it is even fixable since this stuff is an epoxy resin. Fix the car the right way. nipper

Bklu makes new friends
No PR is bad PR as long as they spell your name right. Damn Typo. i got Blus name wrong. i'm glad he doesnt have an internet connection

Bklu makes new friends
They REALLY are not petable. i went through there one year by motorcycle and got chased by a Bull (Buffalo). They can MOVE! Aparently he didnt like the sound the starter made. Yes they are not the cuddly type. We came upon a heard on the road (literally) in a fog bank in one of the back roads in the park. Blu had to tip toe around them as they napped, even he understood just one could do serious damage to him. nipper

Bklu makes new friends
I had four apples in the car to hand feed them. They really are gentle creatures, known as "moochers". They have to look inside the car to make sure there is no food. That is all he (she?) wanted to do. He held his ground untill i moved the car. I did feed the others. He (i have video) also found Blu tasty, as he kept licking Blu. I'm thinking it was from the road salt. Yes she did say something like that. I also have video of us in a heard (literally) of Buffalo. For obvious reasons I did not get out of the car for pics of that, as they were huge and had babies. nipper
