Bklu makes new friends
Maybe we need a trip report subset? Blu makes new friends, Custer State Park, Black Hills, South Dakota Mom in a "Don't you DARE open this window" moment Full Set Why i love a subaru? I would NEVER take any other with 255,000 miles plus on it, with my 80 year old mother, on a 3895 nine day trip to see her great grandchildren in any other car with that miles. nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthere are many cars that will have the fans run after it shuts off. If this is all it takes to set you off i suggest you examine your life So why wont you check to see if the radiator is in good condition? Personally i think there is nothig wrong with this car. The enngine temp sensor reads at the engine, not at the radiators. If you want try running the car without the t-stat as a test, but i really dont see anything wrong here myslef. nipper

Binding while turning in 4WD
4wd = the front and rear axles are connected the transmission with fixed gears. AWd = Front and rear wheels are connected to the transmission via some sort of mechnaical device that allows for some slippage between the front and rear wheels. You need to have slip someplace in the driveline, otherwise the drive train "winds up". Slip is allowed by a center diff, a clutch pack, or some other method. The front axle always travels at a differnt speed then the rear axle except for in a stright line. Even when in a striaght line the wind up (torque) is not suddenly disipated, it is still there. In 4wd the driveline is connected by fixed gears. In 4wd the slippery surface (gravel sand dirt snow ice) will allow for the slip. On dru roads this does not happen, and the wound up driveline binds, hence torque bind. Tis bind can be dangerous on dry and wet paved roads as it can tear apart the driveline, make shifing in and out of 4wd impossible, or cause a wheel to loose traction. nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell see that tells me that something is reading wrong. T-stats are dead on devices and mechanical. They have a temp they start to open at and a temp that they are fully open at which is about a ten degree span. I think you are barking up the wrong tree or have an air pocket in the cooling system. Get the specs out for the engine temp sensor and check its specs. Get yourself a cheap thermometer and measure the temp of the coolant in the radiator. You can blame the the Tstat all you want but they generally work, and that is not your problem. Also for a point of refernece at what conditions are you reading this temp and what is the outdoor temp. Why are you worring about this anyway. I know blu can read 180-210 and gave the engine temp needle barely move off the 1/2 mark. Somrtimes there is such a thing as too much info. How old is the waterpump? nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat valve is there for a reason. Make sure the temp is what it is. How are you getting this temp reading as this is an OBDI car. I would look at the radiator next. nipper

98 obw code and no speedo
nipper replied to mountain brat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSpedo is NOT known for problems in this year car, that is the 1999's. Stalling can be caused by the either of the issues you have. Test the VSS to make sure that it is functioining and that the wiring has not gotten damaged. Celan the IAC and see if that helps. Make sure the IAC is functioning. nipper

Thermostat install
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDont just go drilling out themrostats, thats bad. use an OE T-stat with the jiggle valve. This car is old enough to have a clogged radiator or a decrepid radtiator (falling apart behind the AC condensor). look there. I bet you never even thought to replace the Radiator cap either. Always start with the simple stuff before you just throwing money at a car. nipper

Oil is fuller not emptier ????
nipper replied to mulcheese's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it was water the oil would be milky white. Going by the level in the overflow is not a good indicator depending upon how often you notice it (most of us dont including me). A better possability is a leaking fuel injector, or a mis reading of the dipstick (they are a PITA to read at times). Check the oil every morning with car cold. When was the last time you changed the PCV valve? How often do you need to add oil normally. HG issues are usually obvious with gunk floating in the coolant. nipper (ps pet peeve its not "fuller" its increased oil or something like that. Fuller is a brush )

nipper replied to Shaka's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt's just a dying lightbulb. It is old enough to have it go out. Find someone with small fingers You shouldnt even need to look at the shifter to see what gear your in. Push the button to get out of park. From reverse the shifter will slide into neutral and drive. The shifter will slide between N and D without the button, but you will need the button to get into R. Upshifting from 1 to D does not need the button, but downshifting does. It is a fairly Std shift pattern. nipper

Which LSD to use - can they be tested?
i sort of remebmer rainbow colors myself, but then again the 80's are a bit hazy. BTW "how to test an LSD" is NOT a good search phrase in google. I was taught a torque wrench was used ona bench test after locking up the input and one axle shaft and seeing at what torque it breaks away. But how hard is it to change the rear diff if you pick the wrong one. You can also pull off the rear cover and physically inspect it. nipper

Which LSD to use - can they be tested?
So the proper responce should have been "the brown LSD is bad?"
-
Which LSD to use - can they be tested?
AH thats a entirely differnt animal. There is a procedure for using a torque wrench to measure the breaking torque. These operate completly differntly from VC. VC wait for wheel slip to engage, where as mechanical ones are engaged and wati for a torque differnce between wheels (like in a turn) to disengage. But you need a FSM to do know the numbers. You can do it to all three on the bench, and just take the one with the highest torque rating. nipper
-
Which LSD to use - can they be tested?
Not really. You cant really make enough resistance on a bench to heat the VC up enough for it to hook-up. nipper

What to do about oil light?
nipper replied to Uber125's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOverheating can lead to ruining the bearings and causing the oil light to be on. Just depends upon what over heating actually happened. Don't drive the car, have a shop look at it, or connect a low range oil pressure gauge (mechanical) to the engine. This may be a 25.00 pressure switch or something that is correctable and less then the cost of a new engine. Dont take the chance, tow it to a shop. nipper
