Spark problems
NO computer problem. It can be a bad coil, or a bad ignitor. The coil is much cheaper to replace. What happens is that whateveritis gets hot, the electrical insulation (coil) or a internal solder joint (ignitor or the thing in the distrubutor) opens up, and the car dies. Since the ignitor tends to drive you nuts with no rhyme or reason, replace the coil first and see what happens. Also since it fails and stays failed while hot, you can check for a signal from the (I cant believe I cant remeber what its called) thingy in the distrubutor is sending a signal to the ignitor or not. nipper

HG Problem, or Pair-A-Noids? Your Thoughts
nipper replied to four-fleet-feet's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOK lets take this back to basics. Power wash the underside of the engine with a de greaser. Unless they do this they can't really say its a bad a head gasket. Some HG's will ooze a little oil, and its not a big deal. I drove a car for 5 years with a weaping HG. I think you are in the same boat i was once. I had a wet HG on my fathers BuicK for 6 years. Everyone said it needed replacing, but it wasnt over heating, wasnt loosing oil, so no need to replace it. So just poltily say "i will look into that" and move on. nipper

Failed Inspection : Updated
nipper replied to msmithmmx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMake sure you measure a good tire, then match up a tire with it. Otherwise that will come back to bite you in the tail later on. nipper

90 Legacy no start...
nipper replied to dragoon4570's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGeneral rule of thumb, if it ran before you messed with it, then something you did is keeping it from running. It's quite common to get the timming off on these engines, go back and tripple check. nipper

Failed Inspection : Updated
nipper replied to msmithmmx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIn california, especially San Francisco, your parking brake must work. It makes sens in PA since on a hill your supposed to use the parking brake with a manual or automatic. In SF you can a ticket for not using your parking brake. There may be other states that have it as a requirement. Most the time just using the parking brake will avoid it from getting rusty. You may mock it untill your car gets hit by someone with a failed parking brake (I have). nipper

fuseable link questioin,
nipper replied to 86subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFuel tank is a subaru thing (and happens on other cars too). You need to remove the senders and clean them with a hard pencil eraser (tried a soft one, it didnt work), The wiper can be a bad internal switch in the wiper motor, or a bad ground. Run a new grounbd for the motor and see if it works first, Of course there is the possability that you have it on intermitent. nipper

Failed Inspection : Updated
nipper replied to msmithmmx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI really see nothing there to complain about except for timing. 3 of the 5 are saftey items, and if you include the leaking flex joint, thats a saftey item too. nipper

nipper replied to mcbrat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThen that will work. Make sure the inside diameter is very close to the diameter of the cradle bolts. Whis way the spacers wont shift. nipper

I'm sorry, skid on iced road and hit a tree
nipper replied to rverdoold's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIce is Ice is Ice. Short of studded snow tires, nothing is going to help. Once the car starts sliding sideways, all bets are off. This is not like rain where if you release the brakes, or release the throttle, tires will regain traction. They wont. Sleet or slush is just as bad as ice. nipper

I'm sorry, skid on iced road and hit a tree
nipper replied to rverdoold's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAir bags wont go off for every impact, as they are calibrated for a specific kind of shock wave. You hit the tree in the weakest part of the bumper, between the two supports. They arent calibrated for what is a single point impact at such a low speed. i'm glad no one was hurt. nipper

O2 sensor readings
nipper replied to FSRBIKER's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt should vary between 0.1 to 0.9 volts once the car is in closed loop mode. Just revving the engine may not be enough to get a variation. There should be some movement, but then again, depsnding upon the sampling rate of the multimeter your using, and weather or not its analog, you may not see it. Hold the engine at the rpm and see if it moves. If your using an analog meter and not seeing the change, it can be a sluggish sensor. When the engine is cold the output will be a steady 0.1-0.2 volts, so at leats we know its warmed up. I am a really big fan (ok i insist upon it) for the front sensor to OE from subaru. They have a differnt response time then Aftermarket (even if they are from the same supplier). nipper

Opinions please... maintenance at high mileage
nipper replied to chiguy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBrakes are really easy and can be done yourself, and not for a lot of money. brakes on a sooby are mostly (easy) labor. The Tranny service you can do yourself, so now we just cut the price in half. Maint is not a reason to ditch a car, because unless you are buying a brand new replacement, your going to hit the same bills anyway (not to mention sales tax, tags, etc). nipper

MAP Sensor & Pressure Exchange Solenoid?
nipper replied to EVOthis's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes, it tells the computer how much load the engine is under. The higher the load (lets say going up a hill or passing) the lower the vaccum. Its very imporatnt. nipper
