2. Pros and Cons of Dual Range VS AWD
nipper replied to cole098's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell it depends on how cheap the AWD system is. Ones without ciscous couplings or clutch packs can leave you with one wheel drive. With clutch packs and viscous couplings you get 2wd (one each axle). You get a poor mans limited slip by applying light brake pressure to the rear wheels (parking brake) or all 4 (brake pedal). This puts drag on the spinning wheel and transfers that torque to the non spinning wheel. Viscous LSD's are really poor replacements for good old fashioned mechanical LSD or Posi rears. nipper

Auto window doesn't know when to stop
nipper replied to Max Power's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFrom the automotive design point of view (My field) anytime we can replace a mechanical switch with a chip, its a cost savings. Not only in up front costs, but in warrenty costs. Switches are good in fixed positions, but when they get shocked from door slams, they usally get damaged over the life of the car. The test cycles are results of lab conditions. I used to test micro switches. Also making chips to whats required for the automobile really isnt that special anymore nor expensive anymore. nipper

noob soob question :)
Why remove emission controls if they are working? Its not like the old days where you just ripped the stuff off and gained instant horsepower. (unles you get an aftermarket carb ) For oil leaks, take the car to a do it yourself car wash and wash the engine using a degreaser. The usual suspects are main seal, valve cover gasket, cam seals (if it has a timing belt), oil pump, and water pump, depending upon the make-up of the muck. nipper

FWD to AWD
i want to go part shopping with you if you can get all that for less then 200.00. The tranny alone is more then that i would think. nipper

FWD to AWD
Really easy, 1st you sell the car, then you go and buy one with AWD. Anything else requires alot of $$ in parts. nipper

2. Pros and Cons of Dual Range VS AWD
nipper replied to cole098's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNothing works on ice unless you have studded snow tires, then everything works. It really depends what you want to do with the vehical. Manual Dual range 4wd is cheaper and simpler to produce then an AWD system. Either system is good for snow. If you have snow mixed with non snow surfaces, (especially on curves) you want AWD. nipper

HELP..! 96 OB HG job--solved...!
nipper replied to bgambino's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX"Idle high (1600) and wont come down...all of a sudden she drops to 750 but is stumbling...3 seconds later back up to 1600 and smooth...5 seconds later to a stumbling 750...and she repeats that cycle over and over" Thats what vacume lines have to do with anything. Time to take out the compression gauge and see whats going on. ANy bubbles in the coolant? there should be lots of them if its a bad HG again Give us some history on this engine. Did it ever over heat, if so how hot and how often. nipper

HELP..! 96 OB HG job--solved...!
nipper replied to bgambino's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid you have the heads resurfaced? Did you buy the HG fomr a dealer or from ebay? What procedure did you use to tighten the head gaskets? Check all your vacume lines. Try topping off the coolant with the engine running and warmed up. nipper

nipper replied to v8vega215's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWooooooooooooooo i love how they leave out little details. Did they flush out the entire fuel system after replacing the fuel pump? You need to write subaru in detail, as that is whats required by the lemon law. The dealer doesnt want to fix the car. if it was my shop, I would give the car to a mecghanic to drive to and from work for a week with a scantool attached. nipper

nipper replied to scrapdaddytatum's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXPet peeve time.... its a holiday weekend here in the US. You may not get responses from people who know how to answer till monday. Responses tend to be a little slow on weekends as it is. i read USMB when not at home, but dont always respond till i get home. Now for me, i wouldnt pay anything for one, i would expect a free one to be in my driveway nipper

Auto window doesn't know when to stop
nipper replied to Max Power's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXA cricuit is much cheaper to build and no switch to go bad. And really how many poorly aligned windows do subarus have? Or bad window mechanisims? nipper

Replace the PCV valve. If you have a lot of blow-by (from worn rings) not much you can do about it. nipper
