Lift Kit - progress report
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWell its never been a comforting charge rate. At times it would dip to 11.9, then up to 12.8 (we are talking less then a second here) with full load. I am almost tempted to have the alt shop here look at it and see what they think. The problem is that it passes on car load tests. I dont have a lot of comfort in thealtenator on the car. Anyone got a good one they arent using? I dont want to pay for a (rebuild) replacement untill im sure. Even when it dips below 12 lights dont dim, so I never worried about it. Maybe its just a bad battery from the get go. I've driven down to DC and back in the rain with no issues (200 plus miles one way). nipper

Lift Kit - progress report
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBlu will be home tomorrow, they just have to get him on the alignment rack. Then i need to drive it for a few days and bring it back for state inspection. The inspector is on vacation this week. Odd thing. the battery is dead as a doornail and wont hold a charge. The battery is less then a year old, so they are replacing it under warrenty. They suspect my "gadgets". I disagree. The altnator is putting out over 13 volts. I also got them from them too, though my gut tells me it isnt putting out enough power. I have wired to the battery the rear fog light relay. The air horn relay. The driving light relay. All three are only activated by their respective switches, for which the car has to be on. There is also a 400 watt amp that is wired to the battery, and controled by the car stereo. COUld this be the culprit? I never liked relying on remote switches.

Drive Cycle and CEL
nipper replied to nickb21's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is also no set standard for what a drive sysle is defined as, so each mfg will have a different definition of what it is. nipper

Does AC effect power or mileage??
nipper replied to BoostedLegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts called windtunnel testing. Every single automaker does it, there is no one lab. It is critical to get the drag coeffecient down while keeping the wind noise to a minimum. Thats why subarus don't have rain rails anymore. Every car is subjected to wind tunnel testing. nipper

Lift Kit - progress report
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYAY i was going to send you an email to ask about it When i looked at it, and later in a private email to the original person (these are scorpion kits in austrailia) they tend to go bigger (not just taller) with their tires. I may go taller, but wasnt planning on going wider. Right now the only interfernce issue has been the rear tires rubbing the springs at full extension, which is not something i am planning on doing. Hopefully i will get Blu back today or tomorrow. The camber bolts were unexpected, the dog bone motor mount was not expected (any suggestions on that besides a welded extension), and the tranny cable, well, it was old. I ordered aftermarket air intake to get around that other issue. nipper

Does AC effect power or mileage??
nipper replied to BoostedLegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMythbusters is as accurate as the Enquirer or Weekly World News. Its an entertainment program, not based in facts. The magical number is 40mph. Below 40 mph is considered city driving, and the car gets the best mileage with the ac off and the windows open. Below 40 there is enough "urban" noise that some wind noise is acceptable. Above 40mph is considered highway driving, and where the car is aerodynamically designed. The testing is done with all the windows up to minimize drag. Opening the windows creates alot of drag. At highway speeds wind noise is an undesireable effect. nipper

More on Torque Bind
nipper replied to steamin53's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe awd has completly failed. Brakes can fail but the car still drives. The trnasmission is only part of the drivetrain and thats fine. Its a complete failure , as it is putting a high load on the driveline, including the carrier bearing and the universla joints. Also it can cause loss of control of the car in the rain. Mr car meet Mr telephone pole. nipper

Mystery noise
nipper replied to frag's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat would do it. Also too high a reading can indicate a jumped timing belt. I am getting more and more convinced that you have a valve issue and not a HG issue. nipper

nipper replied to frag's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXactually 195 sounds high, as it should be 180. Wet vs dry will tell us the condition of the engine rings. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm How old are the plugs? nipper

Lift Kit - progress report
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI will do that in the fall, i have to see how that is bolted in place. I will also study the allied kit. I think the cause for the failure (and other failures) is the use of oversized tires that were dubbing up against the frame. I am not going to go that route. nipper

Does AC effect power or mileage??
nipper replied to BoostedLegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts about 5hp. In all the years that AC has been on cars, its never been 30hp. Alo somone who is better in math then me can prove it mathmatically that it is about 5hp. nipper

Does AC effect power or mileage??
nipper replied to BoostedLegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBlu in summer gets 19 w/ac 21 without ac. On the highway it seems the same either way, or its so close that it doesnt matter. On a tank to tank basis, it may cost you 4-5.00 to run the ac per tank. Personally thats fine with me if it keeps me from cooking. nipper

More on Torque Bind
nipper replied to steamin53's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have been saying this all along there is more to the AWD then just the solenoid. AS far as to why the solenoid failed, why does a light bulb burn out. Why doea an ipod fail, or a refirgerator. These are electro-mechanical devices, they fail, it happens. On a 1996, ask yourself why anything has failed in your car. The parts get old. Wires get brittle, insulation breaks down. Weall start failing with age. Nothing lasts forever. nipper

The Subaru Tick
nipper replied to BoostedLegacy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHow many miles? When was the last time the timing belt was changed and what was done. Its not the timing belkt that ticks, but the idler/tensioner bearing. In your case if you think its an oil change, well then, change the oil and see if it goes away. Timing belts arent like chains, they wont make noise when they go bad. nipper
