OEM Brake Pads - Best choice?
nipper replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would do all 4 at once for best braking. I wouldnt put ceramics on the rear and metalics on the front. I would do it the other way around though. Remember that the front does all the breaking nipper

OEM Brake Pads - Best choice?
nipper replied to Suzam's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI switched to ceramics. Much better feel and performance then OE. Ceramics weren't available for Blu new at the time. They were only for high performance cars. If you are staying with standard pads, then OE is good. If you got really long life out of the original pads, I would stick with OE. nipper

Convert to Dry Sump?

nipper replied to skelly's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThis is true, but you can also rent the code reader to have it for whne this happens. Alos look at the knock sensor, if it is cracked or loose it needs to be replaced. nipper- My mystery car problem
nipper replied to subegrl's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAt 172,000 miles on the OE O2 sensor is a long long time. The sensor is near the end of its life (anything after 100,000 miles is cream). When blu hit 180,000 he got a tuneup and a new O2 sensor, It stopped the angry light from coming on and got rid of my bucking. nipper- check engine light
nipper replied to skelly's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWe need the codes. Most likely its an O2 sensor. nipper- Air Intake

nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHold onto that untill i get Blu back home, i can take some measurements, i like that idea. nipper- Air Intake
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe problem is the two ears on the black box ontop of the throttle body. Tchnically i can keep the factory air filter, i just need to rid myself of the big box, get the air to that part of the engine, with something with a 90 degree bend in it. nipper- Intermittent Hard Starting
nipper replied to bridorf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFuel pressure regulator leaking down? Try this. Turn the car on, count to three, then see if it fires up. This gives the fuel pump a chance to pressureize the fuel system. If the problem goes away, you found the problem. Next step would be to check the fuel pressure with a gauge. nipper- Air Intake
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts long enough, its the airbox on top of the engine that is the issue. It does not sit flat anymore. nipper- Air Intake
nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWith the lift kit the stock airbox no longer bolts where it is supposed too. I only took a quick look at the car, but I do agree it cant stay that way for very long. Trust me im an engineer, i know the stock system is fine, but the car is not at stock height anymore. The problem is the airbox over the engine. nipper- Air Intake
Ok Blu needs a modified air intake. I dont buy into a lot of the mumbo jumbo on the after market systems ( being an automotive engineer alot of it is bunk). I am seeing prices from 5.00 - 250.00. The only thing I have read so far and agree with is if I get one off ebay, is to throw out the filter that comes with it and get a real (non chineese) filter. My questions: What is the difference between a K and N unit (or some other name brand) then ebay? Are the non-oil filters available ANy recomnedations? nipper- Any way to modulate knock sensor effect?
nipper replied to uniberp's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi have no idea whay the resistor works in place of the knock sensor, as it really shouldnt. The knock sensor is a piezo electric sensor (think microphone). It creats an AC signal, and the ecu examins that signal (the spikes) to adjust the timing to reduce the spikes. nipper- 99' legacy outback overheating
nipper replied to oliveim's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyup way too much money. nipper- Convert to Dry Sump?
Not quite http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question331.htm http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=question331.htm&url=http://www.razorperformance.com/info.htm http://www.moroso.com/articles/articledisplay3.asp?article=AboutOilPans.html it is also for hard cornering, as it is hard to maintain a constant oil pressure, as the oil moves around the crankcase in corners. Cooling is just an extra advantage, like remote oil filters etc. nipper- Subaru Justy Questions

nipper replied to nipper's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi just went to see Blu today. The shop is closed, but Blu is parked on the street. This was the first time i got to see Blu on my own (should have popped the hood). I bounced the car, i like the firmness of the new struts. The BIGGest reason for doing this, worked out better then i thought. My back. If i sit below my knees, i have a hell of a time getting out of a seat after a few hours. NOw with the extra height, my legs are at 90 degrees at my knees, so i can actually get out of the car easily. They are car guys. They are good people. nipper- Help Me Choose a Tire for a Forester
nipper replied to StructEngineer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXBecuase subarus do pretty well with AWD, and they arent race cars, tires can be fairly forgiving. nipper- 99' legacy outback overheating
nipper replied to oliveim's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAt that mileage it will not be the radiator (unless it leaks). There are three possabilities. One is a bad Tstat. Another is a bad radiator cap, the third is a HG. Is this a dual cam or single cam engine. Id its dual, internal HG, if its single, the HG usually fails with an external leak and wont cause overheating. Look at the condition of the fluid in the overflow. Start the car with the Rad cap off and watch for bubbles. With the T stat gone this would be an easy and quick test. See if the car has heat. Ask the seller if he had any work done to the car recently. How much is he asking? nipper - My mystery car problem
