What's wrong with Fram oil filters??

The AC compressor uses the oil in the refrigerant as a lubricant, so you would wipe it out. Some compressor have oil in a crancase, but they still use the refrigerant to help lubricate the moving parts. What do you want to do with a compressor? nipper

brakes have gone hard

Sounds like your booster went bad. Here is the test. pump the brake pedal 5 times with the car off. With your foot on the pedal, start the car. The pedal should go to the floor. If ti doesnt the booster died. Never tap a vac line into the brake booster line. It's just generally not a good idea, as there are plenty of other vac lines to tap. i would remove that first and see what happens. But i bet its the booster. nipper -

So a guy who sells subarus and services them, and is a bit of a subaru nut, is wrong. (sarcasim) Go figure. nipper PS SUbaru itself says 3750. 7500. and 15000 a oil and filter at each change http://www.subaru.com/owners/schedules/index.jsp?navid=SCHEDULE_1998 Personally ts foolish to use some of those intervals if you like your engine. 20 bucks per oil change is 200.00 dollars in five years. Double that its 400.00 dollars. a new engine can be from 3500 on up. its much cheaper insurance to do oil changes more often. If the car is a throwaway, fine use the stretched intervals. If you want to keep your car longer (like most soobies) cut them in half. But hey i just get my facts wrong and many years of analyzing bearing failure, what do i know. -

We can each bring Andyjo a new AWD clutch disc MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA nipper -
have you talked of r-e-p-l-a-c-e-m-e-n-t in front of the car? Maybe the car is afraid of being replaced, so running better Oil consumption after over heating is a ring isssue . Maybe the rings finally ground themselves down into the grooves in the cylinder walls so the consumption has stopped. nipper

Engine Braking

Downshifting is much safer then braking going down hills in slick conditions. The key to maintaining control on a car is to keep the wheels spinning, so that they do not loose traction with the road. Brakes can loose traction easily by locking up. It is nearly impossible to loose traction by downshifting a car (especially a subaru) , ice being the exception. Thats why one should downshift in snowy conditions, on a slick road surface. Unless your driving like a fool, the mass of the car will slow you down without skidding on any surface. Brakes Can apply more braking force then is needed, and lock up the wheels. Thats an instant loss of traction. nipper -

For the record, there is no such thing as too many oil changes. If somone is comfortable at 3000 miles, then thats what they should do. Though considering the year of the car here, i dont know where you get those numbers http://www.cars101.com/subaru/subaru_maintenance.html nipper -
Wet and dry compression test. It can be sunk lifters. Itcan be burnt valves or stuck rings. One never knows how long cars sit around from an auction. Leakdown cylinder tests would tell alot too, along with a maybe a vac gauge reading (what the needle is doing) nipper

There is more and more junk coming out of china, so let the buyer beware. The OE industry is working hard to fight this, but it seems ot be a loosing battle as long as China doesnt give a damn about its silly american customers.Alot of the rotors out of china are made up of scrap metal. Dont buy cheap when it comes to brakes. nipper

Ill try this again, last time the site threw up on me In a word, probably not. DIrty ,loose connections can cause overloads and fires. There is an increased resistance across the connection. The Altenator is responding to this by cranking out the volts and amps to try to bridge this resistance. This is what an altenator may do if the battery is internally shorted. SInce the higher resistance was local, it shouldnt be a problem. What i would do is check the last few inches of that lead and make sure its pliable. If its not you may want to replace it, as an over heated wire is not as effecient, and can cause the same probelem. nipper -
The temp sensor and o2 sensor can make the car run very rich. Either failure on its own may not be that bad, together its possible you are dumping fule into the engine, and pissing off the cat. You may be getting an o2 code because the car is running too rich, and the o2 sensors as far as they know, are reading off the scale. Check the engine temp sensor. If it is busted and the car thinks its stone cold, its going to dump a lot of fuel into the engine. nipper

Engine Braking

Usually redlines are set around the point where valve float starts to happen. Valve springs can only go so fast to keep up with the cams. As was stated, the problems happen when the engine is making max HP at full throttle, (or just off max HP). The oil is relativly cool, oil sheer forces low, engine coolant is relativly cool, and combustion pressures and temps are at thier lowest. There is a complicated explination on how your moving the wasted energy (heat of friction) from a metal disc with limited abilty to shed the heat, to hot gasses inside the engine. We all know the engine is designed to deal with hot gasses very well. I will skip this thermodynamically leaning explanation, as it even gives me a headache (and i am an automtotive engineer). Your not hurting the car. I did see one cute explimantaion on a trialer towing site, saying reason #4 for using engine braking with or without a trailer going down hill. They said the odds of you showing up on youtube with your brakes on fire are much greater if you dont downshift. nipper
