2wd tranny not going into 1st?
nipper replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How old is the clutch? Maybe its time for a cable adjustment? Check the linkage bushings. Try starting off from first with the engine off. nipper -
They are great people at Grand Prix. If thats what they found, thats what I would go with. Why did it happen? things break. You are a bit confused on operation of things. The tranny light will flash on startup to indicate a fault when the car was last operated. The light went away because they fixed the problem. Drive and be happy You know your due for a timing belt either 106,000 miles or 8 years (ish) nipper

fuel pump?
nipper replied to ashleem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Yes dont spend any money on this untill you pull the codes. There are several possabilities as to why this is happneing, and i dont thnk its going to be a single cause. My guess is a bad tep sensor and a bad o2 sensor. This car is OBDII. There is nothing wonrg with the fuel pump, though a fuel filter prbbly wouldnt hurt. nipper -
make sure the tires match and are equally inflated. I dont remeber what AWD system are on these cars, but its the rule of thumb with anything AWD. The heater is prbbly the resistor block or relay. They are solid cars you should be good with them. Air suspension its easier to convert it over to normal struts. nipper

Take a straight edge to the decks of the engine. When you cook the engine, you can actually get things hot enough that the cylinder sleeves will move, making it impossible for the HG to ever seal the engine again. Check both sides, they should be the same. Also an oil change wouldnt hurt. I am thinking you just got some crummy gaskets. Its rare when one of these cant be fixed, but when it cant its usually because a cylinder sleeve has moved. nipper

Rocky Road trip/Temp Question
nipper replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
YOu need to REMOVE the radiator to inspect it. You cant just look at it. The AC cond. hides alot of damage. Also its chgeap insurance at this age to get a new one. nipper -

You trun the key the car starts, as far ar your concenred its fine. Now the computer on the other hand sees in great detail that there is noise on the line, indicating something it does not like. The NSS i thought was in line with the ignition switch. Try unplugging then plugging the connectors in first (ignition and NSS switch). Sometimes some corrosion on the terminals can give a code, and just that activity may clean the contacts. nipper -
People tend to keep thier subarus, so you wont see many for sale. Going by sale numbers are faulted. Subarus overall tend to hold together really well. Even if something as pesty as throwing a rod happens, usually everything else attached to that is still as good as new. Blu threw a rods at 191,000 miles due to the previous owners beleif in once a year oil changes (it was not synthetic oil either). If well Maintained Subarus do not have an upper end on their mileage. What does seem to go out eventually is the AWD clutchpack (over 200,000 miles from old age) in the automatics. Manuals seem to get a grumpy synchronizer or two. There is no systematic pattern in 90's on subarus as to failure. They have some HG issues (but all mfgs do from the same time period). Wear items go, but no where near as often as the competitors items do. Blu has 211,000 miles on him, and my only nit is the drivers seat back heater doesnt work. nipper

Check the Neutral Saftey Switch. nipper -
oh the sprt mode. If the car is under warrenty i would leave it be. If its not all it is is a switch that changes the shift patterns. I would pull the console and poke around the shifter to see which leads are the one that do it. If it also affects the fuel map (which i suspect it might) it may not be doable. You may not be able to wire them hot all the time, as it may give conflicting info to the tcu when in P R N, or you may be able to. Only one way to find out. nipper

I stand by my original diagnoses that it wasnt the TCU. Flush only works if you have TB and no light. Skip the flush go to the dealer. If you have a failed solsnoid the more yuou drive the car the more your going to hurt the AWD clutch. If its a bad solenoid that are going to have psrtaily drain the fluid anyway. IN the mean time put the FWD fuse in and see if it makes a differnce. nipper
