  1. Dont look at the spark plug hole while it cranks, its going to be messy. Drian the cooling system before you remove the manifold. nipper
  2. Does the sound change: Under acceleration Under deceleration Change of engine RPM as opposed to road speed Change speed as you change gears Change when you go left or right Change with the clutch depressed Change with the car moving (in neutral) Change in reverse. nipper
  3. What is really misleading is how they are displayed. In a store, the speakers are mnounted in wood panels. Albeit its pressword, but its still wood. You get sound bounced back at you, some absorbed, but it is generally warmer. Take the same speakers and put them in a tin can (a car), you dont get the same sound. I tend to avoide speakers that sound really alive or pitchy in stores, since i know they will be even worse in the car. I would like to see the pic nipper
  4. well i have :-p I am looking the pioneer head, and am looking at the pioneer amplifier. One thing i have learned from my home unit, is that speaker quality is really up to the ear of the beholder. If I over power the (new) factory speakers, ill cross the road when i get to it. I would rather have to replace the speakers (which i got for a good price from Jamie) instead of mis matching the other way around. I wish it wasnt winter, I would get the amp and work from there. I have in the past bought speakers in a store that sounded fine, and put them in the car and i did not like them. I would rather get the links in the chain connected before i commit to speakers. At least this way I can return them the next day if I dont like them, instead of three months later after I get everything else hooked up. I need to study my car and sub woofer sizes to see what will work. How small a subwoofer can one go? I just want to richen the sound, not set off the neighbors car alarm. Thanks, keep the thoughts coming. nipper
  5. One of them is built into the spedo head, the other is on the transmission (if this is an automatic). nipper
  6. It's actually very tough and higi as bullit proof "glass".. Its really tough, and can withstand high temperiture plastic. If it melts, i would be more concerned about calling the fire department to put out the rest of the car fire. Thats the only way it could melt. nipper
  7. mileage is very revelant. Things break things wear out. for example if a new car gest sitcky calipers at 20,000 miles thats one thing, if they get it 120,000 miles thats something else. Things bust with time, its just that there is a pattern here. Every car as it gets old develops a pattern of failures with mileage. Thats because they are mass manufactured. If a model of car starts having master cylinder failures afer 130K, thats just wear and tear, otherwise these things can go on for ever and it really isnt fair to the mfg. Whats next, my frame rotted out at 160,000 miles os its the mfg fault. It doesnt and cant work that way, so its just something we ned to be aware of. nipper
  8. http://www.aircoparts.com/1driers.htm http://www.drivewire.com/replacementparts/acreceiverdrier.html desicant never goes bad, it can always be dried out by heat or by a vaccum. The desicant in a car is of a differnt type, and may break down with time. I dont by thier replace every 3 years things, but do agree about when the system is opened up. nipper
  9. I think you have it confused with the reciver/drier. That used to be replaced if the system is left open for any length of time. You can proberly get away with reusing it as long as no contaimenets get in it. If the desicant absorbs a lot of humidity, it just means your going to have pull a vacum on the system longer. nipper
  10. maybe thats some sort of plug your seeing? try a tiny screwdriver and see if it will pop out. nipper
  11. AHA you have to do it more then once. No you dont need the tranny fix stuff, yet. try the proper thing first, which is a repeated drain and fill. nipper
  12. I havent done it but you wont loose any fluid from pulling the axle. Haynes has a real good step by step process with pictures. Use a genuine subaru boot, as they beefed them up for this reason. Also consider replacing the axle, as it may be far easier and less messy. nipper
  13. OK i just wanted to make sure what the delay was. I never heard of nor read about a screen inside the tranny other then the pickup screen in the pan. There is a spool valve that may get gummed up. you can do the flush yourself in the driveway, 3 qts at a time do it 3 times (drain fill start put car through prnd321 repeate). The delay is odd. If you can get it in the snow, put the car in 1st and see what happens. This forces a 50/50 split. If it still delays its not the electronics. Since the clutches do grab it can be either the shimming or the spool valve. I know when I had mine rebuilt they had to match the shims up, and order them. nipper
  14. Can someone put a vacum gauge on these cars (and drive with it) and tell us how the needle is responding, as that would help. nipper
  15. Personally i find the best cars to buy are from people that have valid plates on the car. A dealer doesnt care if the car wont start all the time, or is leaking oil, as it just sits on his lot. nipper
  16. i hope your doing ALL the seals and not just the leaking one. nipper
  17. No i just think your cam position sensor may be going. Thats required to make spark. nipper
  18. You still need a compression test. The way that damage occurs with hydraulic lock is that the connecting rod gets bent. The starter motor doesnt have enough torque to do that, and you werent clear (or i dont remember) if the car actually started. Otherwise you may have ducked the bullet. nipper
  19. er um, if he didnt shim it properly, its HIS problem not yours. Exaclty what have you had done to the car? And when ALso sensors dont really mean that much in an automatic, they need to put pressure gauges on the transmission and drive the car. What do you mena by a time delay, how can you tell? nipper
  20. Thank You, that just answered alot of questions. The amp is the same mfg as the head unit, to make my life easier. The head unit puts out 20 watts per channel, and it looks like the subaru is powered, so i dont think that will be an issue. Wiring: They show (of course at extra cost) a specific cable with two 30 amp fuses in parallel to feed the power. Any idea what gauge wire this should be? thanks
  21. I dont think its humidity as much as dirt mixed with gunk and himidity. nipper
