  1. thermostat from subaru, thats important. My dad always taught me to fill the car with it running and the thermostat open, so ive never had an airpocket in 4 subarus. nipper
  2. 97 OBW 185,000 miles automatic. But the clutch pack is a much simpler version of the center differnetnial on a manual. Oddly they both cost the same to fix. nipper
  3. as long as they mate up at the rack it shold be ok. you may loose the speed sensing but i dont know if the valve for that is in the pump or the rack. nipper PS another option is taking the hoses to a hydraulic place and have them made Sometimes they are cheaper.
  4. \\ :Lets check the pressure switch first. The way for you to find out would be to jump the pressure switch out (since the system is full). Another possability is the evap thermo switch. This one makes more sense since it seems to be temperiture based, and that is the only temp switch on the system. nipper
  5. My tranny light was flashing for maybe all of four days, My daily driving on average has been 25 miles. The dealership called today, the duty c solenoid is dead and the clutchpack is wiped. Cost is 875.00. Also they said there is a torn axle boot (250.00). Now this is a little more then i would pay my mechanic normally for an axle, but they have the car so its getting done. They mentioned the usual leaks, but didnt push for me to get them fixed. I am going to do them with the next timing belt (at this rate next spring) unless something really starts leaking badly. I'm not to shocked about it, as i knew this was a possability when i bought the car. They said otherwise the car is in very good shape, nipper
  6. it always look very green. The reason for the 50/50 is not the mix, but to make sure you dont use tap water. nipper
  7. as much as i am against digital manuals, you may want to get one off ebay to give you a better idea of whats what on your engine. nipper
  8. Wll even if its not sticking, its a good idea to change it. Put in all new coolant, use the 50/50 premix and then lets see whats what. Any idea when the timing belt was replaced? nipper
  9. ok so we can rule out HG issues for now. Ild go with the cap an see what happens, also wouldnt be a bad idea to replace the coolant anyway along with all the other fluids. nipper
  10. the latest covers to 1998, i fthe 2.5 is a dohc then it will wor out for you, if its a sohc it might not. nipper
  11. https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html maybe Jamie can help you out
  12. i THINK he means by ears and teeth, is that these are waht pass by the crankshaft position sensor and generate the pulses for the ecu. If the ecu is looking for 6 heartbeats and sees 30 it is not going to run, same the other way around. nipper DO you have a haynes manual?
  13. crutchfeild is so wonderful at this stage. They have all the goodies to make the install painless. nipper
  14. mint or regular nipper there is also a 2 part kit available in auto parts stores. Dont clear coat them yet, wait a few days to make sure it solved the problem, otherwise your sealing in all the oxidation that cause the yellowing to begin with. DO a search here lots of posts on this nipper
  15. Heater cores have fairly large plumbing, so they dont really get clogged like they used to. Beofre you dig in, flush the cooling system and double check that there is no air bubble in the cooling system, that the hoses themselves are ok. DO you get air movement through the hvac system? nipper
  16. There isnt much more to squeeze out without diging into the block. The exhaust system is already high flow, and the air intake systesm is pretty good. you can go with high flow air filter, but it filters the air a lot less, and can damage the electronics in the air stream. You can maybe play with the parameters in the ecu with a laptop, but the cost vs gain really isnt worth it. In this highly competative automotive industry, there isnt as much hidden horsepower as there used to be, especially in small engines. nipper
  17. First question, any work done to the engine recently? Since your temp gauge is staying reasonable, for now we will discount the HG idea, but air bubbles in the cooling system just dont appear out of no where. Cap is a good idea. When was the last time the cooling system was serviced. Did you feel both hoses. DO you have heat? nipper
  18. we all do that at some time, or the net hiccups and screws us up :-p nipper
  19. well it can be. Seals can wear a groove in the shafts. The trick is not to install the seal as deep as the original seal to avoid that. nipper
