  1. Sears in general is a very very bad place for auto repairs, they got in a lot of trouble here in NY a few years ago. nipper
  2. SInce the motor is out and you dont know the history, replace: Water pump Oil Pump Cam Seals Timing Belt Main Seals Belt Tensioner Drive belts Maybe the exhaust manifold studs Exhaust gaskets that should cover you for a long long time. nipper
  3. a HG is the seal between the cyl head and the engine block. The HG keeps the cylinder (that has 160psi compression and 16,000 plus combustion pressure) the water channels and the oil gallies from mixing. The HG erodes with time due to repeated heating colloing of the block and may fail. They took you head off and rebuilt it. This involves resurfacing (grinding) the valves, valve seats and knurling the guides. the last step stops oil burning. They also put on new valve stem seals. They check the heads for flatness and mil them so they are flat (they can warp). They check the springs and cams for wear. This actually brings the top end of the engine back into like new condition. You will notice more power since you didnt buy it new. It is alos possible to have a very slight power increase due to the slightly higher compression from milling the heads. Not much to imporove the way the engine works, If the car has overheated change the oil. Go by whatever sooby recomneded for that year. CHange the lubricants in the differnetials and transmission. The tranny may grind between shifts, especially the 2-3 shift, which is a weak spot in the tranny. Dont speed shift and you will be fine. Sometimes using redline oil will help it out. Are you asking about the proper way to shift or when to replace the tranny? If its when to down shift, never let the engine chug or lug or strain, you must downshift. No falt answer on when the trany is scrap. Are you having shifting problems? COuld be a clutch. Hope that helps. If this is a 1993 you may be better off in the new forum, or is it an 83? How many miles are on it. nipper
  4. Dealers are usually pretty good about recall repairs as the factory pays for them. The recall is good for the life of the car. nipper
  5. there is a band adjustment, but the thing has been slipping for so long, the damage is done. Even if he can adjust the 2nd gear band, it may only work for a short time. Out of curiosity what happens when you shift manually or start off from d2 nipper
  6. http://cgi.ebay.com/INTERNATIONAL-TEXTBOOK-16-AUTOMOTIVE-REPAIR-BOOKS-1940_W0QQitemZ4652916750QQihZ002QQcategoryZ378QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem get something like this. It will give you good basics. Once cars got away from coal dust nothing really has changed. (if you dont want it ill bid on it. I have a great 1940's repair book that covers everything, and you can see the evolution of the modern automobile. The only thing that has changed is the way they manage things. Next HUGE change is direct injection of gasoline and electronic valave actuation
  7. here on the east coast they are few and far between. i hate to date myself but when i was going to college (80's) detroit was the last place you wanted to be. There were also fewer schools. So are you going into this cold, or always have played with engines? nipper
  8. WOHOO! I have an associates degree in automotive engineering technology from SUNY at Farmingdale. The program is ABET accredited, only one on the east coast. I ran out of money to go further in the feild, as automotive engineering schools are very pricey and few and far between. I'm thinking of going back, have to see where my lawsuit from the major car aaccident goes. nipper
  9. SUbarus have great shifters, notchy, but from an engineering point of veiw, great solid mechanics. He can be affecting the synchros in the tranny, since almost everything is always spinning in the tranny. Thats a good question though, i missed that. Is it a rattle or a grind? nipper
  10. Motormounts almost never go bad on a sooby. Rotate the tires. Shcek tierod ends and balljoints. Check the drivshaft. What college are you going to? nipper
  11. Yes, but i was more concerned about the 200/50 split. That shows a few other nasty problems aside from lifters. Did you do a wet comperssion test too? nipper
  12. LSD is nice, but with an automatic you can get better traction by lightly applying the barkes and ther gas if your truly stuck. But its hard to get truly stuck nipper
  13. Your going to make this tough arent you. I dont know if imprezzas have a center carrier bearing on the driveshaft to the rear wheels. if it does check that. Also rotate the tires one at a time and see if the vibration moves nipper
  14. Ok lets start with basics, how many miles and which tranny. Does it do it cold or all the time. What happnes on turns. Is there any noise that goes along with this. When was the last time somone checked the wheel bearings and cv joints? nipper
  15. hehehe lockers you funny engine is simple to work on and pull out. Seems even the newbes can do it. go to www.cars101.com that will tell you specs. There is the six but i dont remember when that came out. nipper
  16. If its when the car is stoped, its not a tire. Maybe a fouled spark plug? nipper
  17. OK so we have determined mechanically the tranny is fine, that this is a electronic issue. The TPS may not throw a code for the tranny issue. How is the dropping reisitor, that seems to be sulprit sometimes. This is hard to do without a mnaul infront of me. Whats your email, i have something that somone gave me that i want to send you, its a pdf file. nipper
  18. DO the simplest thing first. I suspect the altenator is shorted out. Disconnect the altenator, get a fully charged battery, and start the car. Make sure all the alt connections are wrapped in electricla tape. If You still have a problem, then you have your work cut out for you. nipper
