Tie rods
nipper replied to tcspeer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
dont forget new boots. the housing part Whats your issue nipper -
Tank out the tank and clean it. Replace the radiator cap and put in new coolant with deminerilized water. I would also replace the thermostat. Get the subaru additive, then watch. It could just be mud in the tank. The leak will be external if you have one. The subaru additive, let subaru puut it in and it extendes your warrenty to 100,000 miles nipper

GO to https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html . They have an excellant drawing of it, go to the parts catalog. Its called an inner tie rod end. the outer tie rod is what attaches to the steering knuckle. nipper -
Gotta question

ok you spoke of the unspeakable. I think its torque bind. You cant make it an worse, as the damage is already done. Eventually the car will be a *************** on turns. i dont hink a 5-6 psi differnce will do it, but a 15-20 psi will. Get the car on ramps if you can. Look at the driveshaft. you will see 4 "X" shaped joints, one at the rear axle, then 2 at the center bearing, and one at the tranny. Grab drivesfat and shake it in all directions. Any free play the universals are bad. I doubt this is the issue but lets check. There will be some minor TB on all awd cars, which is acceptable. My obw (auto) went very quickly from "thats odd" to "why wont the car turn out of a space backwards without giving it gas". I cant tell what you have, If its normal TB it wont get worse. If it is real TB you wil know as it gets worse. Check the tire pressures every week to help extend the life if it seems to be getting worse. nipper -

if this is the same car with 117K on it, its a bit soon to have the center carrier bearing go bad, but lets rule out evenrything befor i say something we are not going to like. We know you need a clutch. You may not be able to wait till sept. if there is a broken finger floating around in there, it may be sooner. Go under the car. Inspect the universal joints and the center carrier bearing. are you the original owner of the car? I am going to assume the tires checked out. In a manual, once the unmentionable rears its ugly head, it just usually gets worse. nipper -

Subarus dont shift like this normally. I think you may have two problems. One we wont speak of yet. the other, i think your clutch is broken (yes broken). Your showing symptons of a broken diaphram finger or fingers on the pressure plate.. nipper -
You need to check the dropping resistor under the hood. This resistor is in the circuit that decides how hard the shifts should be. Its worth a shot. Autozone wil give you the TSB for free. Here are some i found dont know if it will help. The ea engines ahd a possible crack between valve in the head. I would rathe have a bad HG then a carcked head. thats not fair. Any Hg that lasts over 130,000 miles is a success. Nothing lasts for ever, no one complain about a waterpump going at 120,000 miles. It wasnt that long ago that 80,000 miles was considered amazing. My sooby has 185,000 miles on the original drivetrain. Only 15% of the HG are bad. The rest of the car seems to last 200,000 miles or more. Also you need to change your radiator fluid regularly on an aluminum engione, that helps (and dont use tap water) I think everyone is just spoiled. :-p nipper nipper

The fix seems to be do it once and its fine. If it helps at all, GM has had HG problems, along with toyota, and a few others over the years. Gm is denying any such thing, toyota is fixing them and subaru you have to throw a hissey fit depending upon the dealer. Chrysler its the neon, vw golf, ford v6, puegot, nissan pathfinder to name a few. Gm has a huge problem with leaking manifold gaskets (plastic manifolds suck). Chrysler is tellng its people to take a walk. ALmots every mfg has one engine with an issue, with the exception of the high end, which doesnt care about weight. The problem isnt so much the head gaskets, its the engines. Having entire aluminum engines makes it difficult to make a good HG. Back when it was a steel block and an aluminum head, it was better, and best with cast iron engines and heads. Aluminum expands and contracts a great deal, twice as much as cast iron to be exact.. Over many millions of cycles, head gaskets blow. HGs are made of a copper alloy, and crush to make a seal, hence why over torquing or wrong pattern is very bad. Some engines do it more then others because the engines have thin walls due to weight savings. There is a pattern of this on engines (if you know the engineering end of them). Its really hard to design a head gasket. When the big 5 have a problem, its hard not to imagine sooby to have one. nipper

ut oh .......................... The parking lot thing is a HUGE red flag. Do all your tires match and are they properly inflated? You may have 2 problems, one your not going to like at all Did you do the clutch test? nipper
