Leaking Axle Boot
nipper replied to johnb102's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere are a few options https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/oe_parts_cat.html they have great prices. Another is go to a mom and pop auto parts store (there is a reason repairshops dont use autozone for parts) and get a rebuilt there. nipper

a/c clutch...problem solved
nipper replied to medic's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXgrrrr Year enigine size type of tranny and mileage. How long have you owned the car. We cant help at all without this information. AC clutch can be replaced without toying with the compressor itself. The other noise assuming this is an automatice, i can only guess at. Yes do a tranny flush. If you pwoerbrake the car does the noise change in pitch. Is the noise there in all gears (listen hard for it). Cant say more till you tell us more about the car. nipper

@#$! dashboard lights
nipper replied to CPAScott's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid you use sooby bulbs or the radio shack bulbs that are recomended. Also you dont say how old your car is, but lightbulbs burn out with age, it happens, and in the newer DIN steros, they cant be replaced (and aftermarket is the same way) One thing to check is to see the voltage at the bulb socket. nipper

Leaking Axle Boot
nipper replied to johnb102's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDepends who is doing it and why. You can replace the boot, but it is just as much labor to replace the boot as it is to replace the axle (if not more). You can get a split boot, but they tend to leak on outer boots, but seem ok for inner boots. nipper

Swapped Engine is Rocking/Shaking
nipper replied to CIS Subaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDitto. There is a right way and a wrong way to store an engine, and if not done properly can screw it up. Did it have plugs in it when you got it? Was the intake and exhaust sealed? nipper

Newbie and aftermarket ATF coolers
nipper replied to sparkydave's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi like semi-syn in the tranny I dont know the threshold of the ATF light, and one really wants to avoid a light coming on as opposed to waiting for the light to come on. A tranny temp gauge would be a good investment too. nipper

nipper replied to wondercow2's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNext time it happens downshift and see if it still does it. What speed and engine rpm does it. when was the last time this thing had a tune up, fuel filter plugs wires etc, it could be a coil issiue, coiuld be fuel delivery. Also have the codes pulled off the car and see what it is saying. nipper

Newbie and aftermarket ATF coolers
nipper replied to sparkydave's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDo a search ehre and see what comes up. There is no such thing as too much cooling of the tranny unless you live where it gets 20 below. Its real easy to do http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/translife-coolers.html http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id=products&sid=4&cat=20&subcat=28&pid=73 to start nipper

Can '97 OBW HG be done "in car"?
nipper replied to Monte's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes it can be done in the car. If you take it out, you unbolt the ac compressor and put it to the side. No hoses have to be opened. nipper

More power from my Outback 2003
nipper replied to Boddi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThise are just variable resistors pput in line with specifice sensors, can be the o2 sensor, and be the TPS, and be almost anywhere and lie to the ecu. YEs you can get more power, but it wil cost you two cat converters. The only ones worth any money are the chips that go in the ECU, and they aint cheap. Dont by the electric turbo either. nipper

improved gas mileage
nipper replied to thesubarukid's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSubarus tend to be picky about plugs and wires, and like OE the best. Considering how often they gaet changed (maybe three times in the life of the car) it pays to go with OE. The K and N air filter has higher flow, but allows more dirt in (this has been discussed many times here, and there is a link someplace to the lab report stating as much). The dirt can damage sensative electronics downstream from the air filter (especially if the filter is oiled). It takes at least 3 tanks of gas from the same station to determine if you get better mileage. In my 97 OBW auto i can get from 17-23 around town just purely with my right foot. i could probabaly use a new set of wires at 185K (car coughs once in a while in gear stoped). Things that can influence mpg. tire air pressure, air filter, junk in the trunk and your right foot. Always good to hear somone has squeezed a few more miles out of a tank of dead dinos.

This is rather mind boggling....
nipper replied to bart2546's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXi keep forgetting you have a 1.8L, sure be difficult. If you can find pictures of them within the same Generation, the sensors should look all alike across the engine range. i dont have any 1.8L info for that year nipper

Interesting take on Fuel Gauges
In my local paper, Newsday, they have a peice on cheap fixes aka Fuel additives (which the scarfed from the LA Times). http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/yourwheels/la-hy-wheels3may03,0,6121637.story?coll=la-class-highway1-yourwheels Basically in the last few years a number of gas stations and refiners have been sued for pumping high sulfur gas. The high sulfur gas contaminates the silver ro silver paladium strip in the fuel sensors (in the tank) and cause "erratic" (read broken" fuel readings at the gauge. The peice goes on to say tens of thousands of cars have been damaged by this. Hrmmmmm They als state that Chevron has a additive sold in sotres called "techron Concentrate Plus" which is designed to clean the sensors and save "consumers potentially 500-1000$ in repairs". i will try this the next time i fill up, cant hurt, aside from the 10.00 they say it goes for. Just wanted to pass on the info. nipper
