  1. Are your rear brakes working? This will cause the front brakes to warp. Make sure the rear calpipers are not frozen. nipper
  2. model engine year and mileage will help alot here. It just sounds like its time to reseal the engine. nipper
  3. Where are you getting the replacements? If its from the junkyard, stop it and buy a new one. you wont have any more issues. From what i understand they arent that pricey. nipper
  4. Assuming you have an automatic: Blown clutchpack will give the reverse, as you would have severe and constant torque bind. You may have a worn duty c valve seat allowing pressure to bypass the solenoid. Another possability is a bad speed sensor (there are two of them). If the second one is freid, or the one in the spedo head is dead, then you wont have AWD. nipper
  5. If you have a dead duty solenoid, the computer will pick it up and flash a code. nipper
  6. Proper test: With car off, pump brake 10 times. Put foot on brake pedal, start car, pedal should move towards floor. If it doesnt you nedd a booster, if it does you may need a master cylinder. nipper
  7. Get a hydrocarbon test for the raditor. If there are exhaust gasses in there your done. Otherwise keep a eye on the temp gauge. Only one way oil gets in the raditor, well two. one is accidental, they other is a bad headgasket. have you checked for bubbles in the radiator? nipper
  8. Depends upon your last mile of driving before parking the car. if you had to gun the car in the last mile, then yes let it sit a minute and spin down. IF you didnt then you can shut off the car and go in. This is where an exhaust gas temp gauge would come in handy. It would dtell you exactly whats going on so you would know. ive only seen one person on a list have a failed turbo, and that was due to his having to floor the car to get up his dirveway. He would shut the car off immediatly. nipper
  9. Pop your hood and look at the top of the engine. If there is a coil pack there with either 4 or 6 sprak plugs wires coming out of it, its a waste spark system, and should cost no more then any other sooby for plugs (maybe an hour more for extra labor, but id a shop cant change plugs in an hour in a sooby they have a problem). Waste ignition means two plugs fire at once since they share the same coil. Now if you do have the direct ignition type, then yes it will cost more. But usually DI cars are 100,000 miles plugs. Also knowing how the engine is set up, i really dont see how they can fit the coil on top of the plug on the flat layout. i may be wrong, if so somone please educate me nipper
  10. From the haynes manual, there are a few more dodads and widgets required to make it work aside from just the control head. Look in the manual, and see what else uou need to swipe to make it work. nipper
  11. The top 1/3 is running hot. It should be in the middle of the gauge, so i would start looking there. i know my 97 AC cuts out when it gets that high. I bet you have a cloged radiator. I had the same issues in an 1988 GL (180,000 miles) and i replaced the radiator and it solved the issue, also my 97 (160,000 miles) would run run hot like yours, again it was clogged raditaor. I would look at the radiator. nipper
  12. There should be other auto parts stores that will pull the code for free, ask around. If they wont you can usually rent a code reader for the cost of the reader. You get all the money back i think when you return the reader, and you can keep it a few days... just an idea. i always thought 100.00 for 5 minutes worth of work was a huge ripoff nipper
  13. Actully it happnes, but not that often on soobies. i had mine done at 180K and it cured the torque bind and it runs great. If the transmission was any other make i would defanitly not recomend a fluid flush. i forgot about checking the fuse nipper
  14. First off run to someplace that knows what they are doing. Rarely does a subaru, or even a car in the last 10 years need a new compressor. There are a couple of reasons for what you are seeing. My first guess would have been a leaky O ring, my second would be a bad pressure switch. You can tell if the AC is on by looking at the compressor. The front of the AC pully will spin when its engaged, and wont when its not engaged. On some subarus if they run hot, the AC will cut out untill the cool down. What is your temp gauge reading. Also what year and how many miles are on the car. nipper
  15. Never accpet that as a answer from a dealer, without him putting you in the same car on the lot and prove it. That usually calls thier bluff. Contatc another dealer to have them check it out or the area service rep, sooner then later as it sounds like you may be getting close to the end of your warrenty nipper
  16. First thing i always do when buying a used car is a tune-up. i would go to an autzone also and check for codes and see if anything comes up. low idle and hesitation can be somethng as simple as a loose vacume line, which could also cause poor gas mileage. Is there any differnece between cold and hot running? nipper
  17. You most likely have torque bind. Take the car out and make a tight turn left and right and see how it feels. Do a tranny flush and that usually takes care of the problem. nipper
  18. At the very least, everytime a cylinder head is torn down, you need to lap the valves to give them a good seal. It is cheap insurance. Cranking the engine by hand, any engine, you will hear air leaking, its normal. Remeber the engine is made rto seal at better then 100 rpm, not one rpm every 3 minutes. Dont worry nipper
  19. I would do a compression test wet and dry just to make sure everything is ok. You can also have a dye put in the oil that shows up with a black light. It will show any oil leaks that you may not be aware of. It sounds like otherwise the valve stem seals are gone. Has anyone driven behind you and noticed any blus smoke? nipper
  20. im not following, maybe its my pain meds. Are you thinking of replacing the rack because the boots are torn, or the ball joints? nipper
  21. Have you ever tried to explain to a 78 yo women (mom) where the switches are? i prefer the lights. After a (sigh) second back surgery im relying on her more then i like, and i cant really reach across to show her where they are. nipper
  22. ive been wanting too, just havent figured out how yet in my 97 OBW. My problem isnt the door locks (alarm takes care of that) but the window switches. nipper
  23. Altenator was probably on its way out and you just rushed things along. nipper
  24. also if your er umm er... Volumetrically challanged or if one of your regular passengers are you have to compensate for that too
