  1. Snce these things dont change much from car to car, i looked in my freinds 2005 Forester Owners manual. It said the heated windsheild fuse is #13 and located under the hood. The rear veiw mirror outside defrosters is also on the same fuse. May be worth looking there to start. nipper
  2. Well you found the problem. The solenoid doesnt work. You have no resistance where there should be. Its a 50/50 crap shoot on damage. What wire did you test and where did you find it for the solenoid ( ild like to pass this on to another thread). If i remebr correclty the solenoid is fairly deep in the tranny, but can be repaired. At that point you can look at the clutches and see what they look like. Invesatigate a used tranny, as it may be easier then replacing the solenoid. nipper
  3. Also a forester does fall in the "rolling brick" catagory. Another factor to look at is your tires. They can have a lot of effect on milage. The more sticky the tires are (handling) the more rolling resistance, the lower the gas mileage. High mileage tires tend ot give better gas milage. Also wht kind of terrane do you drive on on the highway. If its alot of hills, and you find the car hunting alot for the right gear in Drive, go to d3 as that may help. ALso you can get a vaccum gauge. The higher the needle the better the gas mileage. That would give you some feedback for your left foot. One last thing, what condition are your O2 sensors in? nipper
  4. Yes you do a wet dry compression test. if both numbers are the same you rule out the valves and rings. If the liner is cracked, i would imagine the rings would get damaged and allow compression leakage Now when the car overheated, how BADLY did it over heat. It is possible to damage the liners, but you really need to cook the engine, and usually a rod bearing would go too making alot of noise. They really need to do a exhaust gas test at the rediator. Leaks can be directional at times, and what may not show up in a pressure test (14-18 psi) would sure as hell show up while the car was running (12-15,000 psi) combustion pressure. nipper
  5. no much simpler gummed up tranny. it needs a fluid flush first, sounds like the govenor is stuck. Did it work OK before the car got parked? What color is the tranny fluid. i dont know if you have a vacum modulator or not, look and see if you see a broken vacume line around the tranny nipper

  7. Exactly how did he come to this conclusion? did he do a exhaust gas test at the radiator? did he do a compression test? did he do a cooling system leak down test? nipper
  8. it doesnt take much oil to make alot of smoke. You may never really see the oil loss on the dipstick. Did you check the power steering fluid?nipper
  9. thats a long time .. 2 seconds. Something is wrong there mine is within a 1/2 second or less. nipper
  10. just start the car in neutral. Most 4wd vehcials dont have a clutch switch. Sometimes in 4wd its easier to start the car in gear if you get into trouble and stall it. SInce subarus tend to be giant legos, if the 4wd version doesnt have it, the 2wd version most likely wont either. nipper
  11. Not normal. VEry not normal. Since its under warretny take it to the dealer before the warrenty runs out and let them look at it. SOUnds more then the usual piston slap on your other Subaru? nipper
  12. Could be fuel seperator, some cars used that along with the Charcoal canister to catch fumes. Is it square in shape? Then thats what it is, whats it purpose is in life and how it works, your on your own nipper
  13. Actually i just got a refill of Vicodin ... now have someone record the headstands in the snow and we got a deal... The subaru system is very sophisticated for the cost of the car. The mechanics are fairly straight forward, but the logarythem they use is very sophistacted to vary it from 10-50% and everything inbetween. They als use a G sensor to help determine how much to split the awd. i dont know how you got deficient out of something that saved my rump roast But that was a extreem manuver, id ont know how it works on more subtle manuvers... And besides there are those of us that want to do it just because we can. not because it makes an sense. We like our gadgets. And i was thinking instead of interupting the signal to the solenoid, just out in a diode so our black box cant back feed to the computer, but the computer can step in if it feels it needs to do its job. nipper
  14. subarus have poor sending units. They are easy enough to remove on the Legacys, and are prbbly the same on the imprezzas. Remove them (if there are two of them.. on the legacy there is) and with a pencil eraser clean the rheostaet wipe surface area (or use carb cleaner). Check the float to make sure it ... well .. floats nipper

  16. I never paid that much. Go to a mom and pop auto part store that carries walker pipes. i think the entire exhaust system from the cat back cost less then 200.00 and was easy to do myself. i so LOVE flanged exhaust systems as oppsed to the old muffler clamps. nipper
  17. Sounds like they may have turned the rotors at the dealer, and then they warped. Sometimes its better to spend the 30-40 on new rotors then to machine them. I dont remebeer Subaru rotors being thin to begin with, i know GMs are. nipper
  18. i think it is like the rear defroster, that it is not built into the windshelid, but laminated on it. Try #1 - see if you can read power directly off the grid on the glass Try#2 put a voltmeter on the battery, with the car in the on position but not running, you should see a voltage drop on the battery (have somone else turn it on) Try #3 pull the switch out and see if there is current going to the switch. Make sure the switch itself works. Try# 4 look in the owners manual and see if they say what fuse works it. It may have its own fuse under the hood. Modern cars have 2 or three fuse boxes, not just one. nipper
  19. it could be, just you may be the first to have it fail at an oil passageway. Check your raidatoe and make sure the coolant looks good, Check your oil for the same. Aside from being smokey, keep a eye on your temp gauge, and you should be able to drive it to the dealer. If either one of those look compromised, i would have the dealer arange a tow.
  20. minor details ..weather .. always an excuse i'm having back surgery in two weks im not complaing You seems to forget one point. AWD is working ALL the time, not just slippery conditions. Its nice to be able to dial in the amount of torque split for more balanced driving like in the twisties. One of the benafits of AWD is handling . If you treat all four wheels the same, handling is vastly improved as well as performance. i do remeber in one panick manuver at 65mph (women and cell phone) i had to do an extreem lane chang and recover. Very odd feeling when your on dry pavement and you can feel the split change to 50/50. It was the car trying to save its own rump roast, if it was a 2wd car i think i would have been in the bushes or worse. That required an extreem manuver. in the twisties i would like to dial it in like the high end wrx for proper balance. nipper
