Is it possible that a faulty knock sensor would account for pinging under strain even without throwing a code or CEL?

"On older ones they had small springs so work in area you won't lose parts. Worked every time for me!" !!!!! I read this and did not heed the warning. There are small pieces in there and I ended up screening a gravel driveway to recover lost parts!!!! BEWARE

Ask them to replace the passenger side gusset as a start. I was amazed at how much noise had been from this area on my 2000 Legacy once they were replaced.

Are there suitable fluids for tranny and fuel injector cleaners that do the job without the advertising hype? I see where SOA and other specialty dealers ONLY are supllied with BG 44K for engine and injector cleaning and at a relatively hefty price. Other than a marketting ploy and elitism, is there any difference between their chemistry and say STP injector cleaner? On a similar note, much is said about mixing tranny fluids by different manufacturers. Since a drain and fill tranny fluid change only swaps out about half of the fluid, unless SOA specified their factory installed fluid, you would in all likelihood, always be mixing brands. In fact the parts manager of my dealership says he gets various manufacturers sent to him for his shop. Penzoil specifies its type III trany fluid as compatable with other type III Mercon tranny fluids but other compainies do not make such a claim. As long as you are not mixing type F with type III Mercon, is there any harm? Anyone have science to back up the above??

There is a drain hole in the cowling just under the hood in the corner in front of the windshield on both the driver and passenger side. It gets clogged with leaves and other crap. Make certain the hole is patent and try to pour some water in this area and see if it drains out under the car. If not, the rain water that should be draining out is overflowing and going into the passenger compartment probably through an air intake.

Is there anywhere that Technical Service Bulletins can be viewed? I have a 2000 Legacy GT and only recently realized that certain quirks of my car that I accepted as "normal" were covered by updated replacement parts. I would have been screwed were it not for an extended warranty. Access to such bulletins could guide a buyer into buying an extended warranty as the standard one reaches its expiration time.

AVK Thanks for the heads up. I'll check when I order next time. So far I have only ordered accessories online and they were difficult to forge. My local dealer has given me the "wholesale" cash price when I show him the other's prices. The price on electrical and mechanical parts are signifiicantly cheaper than the list price when haggled.

Pinging...Spark plugs been changed?? If yes then ask the dealer if there is a reset for the computer that could be done. There are some TSBs on this but it didn't maker any difference on my 2000 Legacy GT . The biggest difference was after I changed the plugs and I haven't noticed any further improvement from the reset.

Just got back from a trip to Autozone. They have an epoxy product by same company as JB Weld called JB Stick that claims it's good for gas tanks. There was another product on the shelf next to it clled Steel Stick ( I think) that also claimed it was good for gas tank repair.

Just shipped a car from CT to Chaarlotte, NC and the guy with the "hot shot" trailer lives in the Charlotte area. PM or email me if you need his info for a ship and deal directly with the driver. Might be worthwhile if you time it right and you end up as an add on to another trip.

Transmission dip stick is behind the engine in front of driver side firewall. Move a few hoses out of the way, look down and you'll see it has a yellow top. Other side (passenger) lower down yet, again move a few hoses aside, yellow top handle, you'll find the shorter differential dip stick. In either case, if your gaze reaches the ground, you've gone too far.

I removed the assembly from the car (a fortune in coins 'neath the back seat) and with the room it afforded me I was able to untangle the fold that was.... all the way at the reel attachment point. It still took less time than going to the dealer and buying the part and reinstalling it AND I get to keep all the coins. I love this site and the passive and active encouragement!

Over the shoulder belt wouldn't retract and after I rolled the belt back into the mechanism, it won't reel out. OK so it's not a Subaru but I think they are all the same. It's on the rear deck of a Toyota Camry and I don't have time to get it to a dealer and imperil kids in the back. Please administrator don't bannnish this post to the lonely off topic page... I need help.

Don't know if it matters but I put the anti-squeal grease on the back side of the PADS.

Look carefully (Hint: use a flash light NOT your cigarette lighter) at the lines leading from the tank. It is the right location and vintage for rust to be eating out the little "fuel dampers" along the route. They look like the size of a very pregnant silver dollar. I eliminated it without any harm to the system and installed a direct fuel line and voila no more leak. I hope your fix is as easy and not a rusted or damaged fuel tank. If this is the case, there are a variety of clamps and hoses. Have 2 pencils ready to plug the gas line once you've disconnected it, splice in the new piece and away you go.

Butt ugly! Why not just go out and buy the Murano (also Butt ugly). I bought the MY 05 OB to go with the last MY design change 00 Legacy. It seems they are now trying too hard... you'll never get a date behaving like that!

Are those pumps any good for changing fluids worthwhile. I'm about to change gear oil if I ever find the front diff plug and tranny fluid. It's a 2000 GT Legacy pretty low to ground and I can see and access the tranny drain plug but not the front diff plug (where is it??). No ramps or stands and I'm getting older!

At 41K miles SOA replaced my AT transmission under warranty on my 2000 Legacy GT. Trying to figure when to change fluids, I am uncertain about the diff fluid. Would they have needed to replace the front diff fluid at the time they changed the tranny or is it unrelated and completely sealed off by itself?

Draining through the plug doesn't get it all out. So with all the warnings about different manufacturer's formulations, is it safe to mix any Dextron III ATF in with the remaining ATF fluid in the system??
