well my 5 lug swap onto my brumby is finally done....after alot of issues....basically anything on the front end that could give me attitude...did. Parts List XT6 rear backing plates hubs and calipers XT6 front hubs complete with brakes & rod ends etc EA81 control rods reamed out to take legacy balljoints brake lines off XT6 plus assorted spare clips an stuff that came with the brake lines axles i cut and shortened the rear end was pretty straight foward apart from having to shim both caliper carriers outboard by 4.5mm so that the carrier was centered on the disc. the front end gave me a few more problems. first off if your doing a swap on an EA81....USE 16 INCH RIMS OR BIGGER....i used 15 inch rims and had to machine up 5mm hub spacer plates for the front so that the XT6 steering rod ends miss the inner corner of the 15" rims on full lock. axles i made from legacy ones that i cut 85mm out of the middle of and sleeved and welder back together( had to cut the axles with a cutoff wheel on a grinder...the ceramic tip on my partoff tool for the lathe wouldn't even touch them...they are VERY VERY hard) i had to machine the steering rods to allow me to put another 30mm of thread length on the rod(14x1.5mm thread pitch)....which allowed me to cut 15mm off the end of the rod...the XT6 steering rod ends had bottomed out on the thread about 6mm short of enough toe in and didn't allow enough thread to put the locknut on the rod. i got the top hats off a pair of EA81 struts and swapped them onto a set of 2WD impreza struts...just had to file the flat spot in the hole in EA81 round...and fitted them to the XT6 hubs...with a 6lb club hammer and a 1" dia punch:grin:...they are a bit of a tight fit. i also had to push the strut tower with a hydraulic jack and pushing form to expand it on the outboard side to allow the strut top to come out as the suspension comes up also had major issues bleeding the brakes...but i think this was my fault for not following the proper sequence i.e. corner to diagonal corner i also had to get longer brake lines made because the XT6 ones i had were too short to allow full steering lock at maximum suspension travel. got a steering alinement done yesterday...( my 8x2 plank and ruler 'get me to the tyre shop' alinement was only a 2.1mm out on the left side and 3.4mm out on the right side:lol: after a couple of very frustrating and busy weeks i'm finally on the road...and it drive's really nicely... there's a couple of things i still have sort out...i have a 'clonking' noise in the right front side somewhere when i hit largish bumps...having a look for what that is tomorrow...and i don't like the feel of the brake peddle...it stops 'ok' and will lock up the fronts...it takes alot of pressure on the peddle and and the peddle feels....odd...can't really explane it more than that next move i think is to fit a larger master cylinder to see if that sorts out the brake issue....then its time to dust off my supercharger...and become nameworthy again:banana: and i lost a couple of days in the middle because my GF ended up in hospital with gall stones...one very unhappy lass at the time...but all better now i have pics of the axles i modded but can't upload them cos they are too big...so heres a link http://s458.photobucket.com/albums/qq310/LPGsuperchargedBrumby/5%20stud%20swap%20stuff/

i'm doing a a XT6 5 lug swap on my brumby and it would appear that the master cylinder on the brumby is too small for the XT6 brakes (bratsrus1 metioned i might have this problem)... having one last go at bleeding brakes tomorrow as it feels like there is air in the system...but i don't know if thats what a too small master cylinder feels like as well so what i want to know is if a non ABS legacy or impreza master cylinder will fit the brumby/brat booster and hook up to the brake lines... i kinda need to know ASAP oh an a full write up of the swap will be happening (complete with pics of front axles altered to fit) once i have it back on the road Cheers for any advice

Project EJ22 Hatch continues
LPGsuperchargedBrumby replied to Pooparu's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
that is what i'm going do in the morning....i've got the axles cut (had to cut them with a cut-off wheel on the grinder, the part-off tool in the lathe wouldn't cut them...lol it just polished the surface of the shaft...they are really really hard) and i spun sleeves up out of 4140 to be a 0.3mm crush fit. looks like cutting about 85mm out of a legacy axle gets you to the correct length for a brumby/brat.... i'll know exactly tomorrow -
this has been done before...pretty much all the major aircraft engine manufacturers on both sides tried it in varies forms one thing that has been done recently is to use a turbocharger type turbine to drive a alternantor via a reduction drive.... altho i don't know how well it would work on anything that uses a throttle that restricts the air flowing thru the engine....the ones i read about where being tested on a nissan diesel truck

turbo muffler or cherry bomb?
LPGsuperchargedBrumby replied to Logan K's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
cherry bomb....sounds nice on a subaru....thats what i've got on my Brumby/Brat -
will factory legacy wheels fit a brumby/brat that has a XT6 5 lug conversion done on it....will the back spacing be ok? the legacy rims i have are alot wider than the stock brumby rims (rims are off a second gen legacy wagon...don't know what year) and it looks like they have alot more distance between the surface that pulls up against the hub and the back edge of the rim. i'm hopefully going to get the 5 lug swap underway next week...lol i think i have all the bits i need....certainly got all the major bits anyway has anyone else done a 5 lug swap on a brat?...i've searched but didn't come up with anything Cheers Callum

if your looking for spare blocks an stuff give Otago Wreckers in Dunedin a ring....they are a subaru only wrecker....and have a currently at least 4 ea71 engines....including a twin carb motor thats still sitting in a rusted out hatch. if your looking for the newest ea71 engine you can get keep an eye out for a a EA82 shape "1600 FWD Leone".... they have the last version of the EA71 motor...hydraulic lifters electronic dizzy an all the good bits -
Hows the front camber with the XT6 hubs?....is it still \...../ ? or does the slotted mounting holes in the Imp struts allow you straighten them up?

does anyone know the length of front axles off a BRAT/Brumby?....i'm doing a 5 lug swap using XT6 bits....i'm using Legacy axles that i will have to shorten to the right length....an it would help if i could find out what length i need to make them up to before i start that swap so what i need is the face to face length (DOJ compressed) of a BRAT/Brumby front axle....as in the length from the flat face of the CV that goes against the wheel-bearing to the end of the DOJ closest to the gearbox. or if there is a website with this info on it that i haven't found yet.....lol Cheers for any help

have had an issue with the LHS DOJ on my Brumby (EJ22 &RX FT 4WD 5Sp)...it poped the circlip of the end of the shaft....which let the ball cage slip off the end of the shaft (stripping the spline for good measure)...this all happened while fully loaded with most of my worldly possesions and towing a trailer with two motorbikes on it 600 kilometers(about450 miles) from home....while coming down a mountain pass under engine braking in 2nd, and slowing down for a 35km/h corner. i thought the clutch had let go suddenly...but the grumble from up the front and total lack of drive had me looking under the bonnet as soon as i could pull over..... left hand doj had a torn boot an the axle just looked like it was sitting in the wrong place....put it in gear with the handbrake on an the cup turned.... but the shaft stayed stationary:mad: then i remembered i had a center difflock:headbang:.....flipped the switch an made it home....then had to cut the front axles off at the hubs and remove them so i could go back and pickup the rest of my stuff...lol in RWD:burnout: anyone else had a DOJ grenade like this?

EJ22 into a Brumby...swaybar problem
LPGsuperchargedBrumby replied to kiwishooter's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
i ran into the same issue when i swapped the RX box into my brumby.... i heated it an bent the loop down flat then i took it to the spring makers up opposite where the motorcycle wreckers used to be to get retempered. cheers Callum -
i'm running a carb'd ej....my ignition wiring is the same as used on my original ea81...right down to the length of the wires from the coil to the dizzy
