  1. that instrument cluster/pod is the same as i have in my '92 GL brumby except the speedo numbers are all in different places compaired to my'n(and i have a clock on the lefthand side)...at 100kph/64mph my speedo needle is pointing straight up, and my speedo reads to 180kph...the one in the pic only reads to 140kph.....sorta makes me think that one is out of an EA71
  2. EA alternator bolted straight on to the EJ mounts...just had to grind the fan on the front of the EA alt as it was hitting the adjuster.
  3. YUSS!!! My brumby now has a Carb an distributor EJ18 in it After 6 days of working on it (well 5 days of running around getting all the little bits that i needed it seemed) at about 11am today i got my newly installed EJ18 to cough into life.....after a little adjustment the timing was set to 15deg BTDC and a test lap was undertaken....it does 120KPH in 3rd...lol. i have one issue with it at the moment....the battery is being overcharged...found this out when i drove it down to my fathers workshop....we lifted the bonnet when i got down there and i happened to lean in over the battery with the motor running....and choked on the fumes coming off the battery....it was about then that i noticed the steam coming out of the battery cap vents....seems the alt i got with the motor has a crook regulator I've just modified the pulley off the EJ alt' to fit on the EA alt' so that have the same distance from the mounting face to the front of the EJ pulley on the EA alternator as it was on the EJ alt'....the mounting points measure up close enough to drop the EA alt onto the EJ mounts....so i will see exactly how close it is tomorrow morning. Pics hopefully to come when i nic' my brothers digicam
  4. yeah thats kinda what i thought but i don't have time to get gaskets, strip it down, findout what problem is and sort it out and reassemble. found a solid lifter motor that should(!) keep me going untill i can get this one fixed
  5. for me its suddenly....cos i only got back from a year in aussie last wednesday....the ute hasn't been driven for the last 6 months but has been started and run for an hour every weekend.
  6. after scratching my head for awhile i rang a very good mechanic that i used to work with to pick his brain on what the problem could be.....and got told that a cam worn on the back side (opposit the lobe) would cause the lifters to stick and hold valves open....he had exactly the same thing happen on a toyota diesel. so i need a new cam or to get my'n built up then reground....and don't have enough time to pull the motor apart to get the cam out sorted and back together before i need to travel 500 miles to a new job.....so i'm off to the local subaru wreckers to try find a replacement motor to get me going till i can rebuild my one....with a few select mods along the way....like 60thou off the heads:grin:
  7. i think the WonderBrumby already has a D/R 5spd....at least it used to
  8. LOL...yeah that was the first thing i looked for after looking at the valve/seats etc
  9. can't do a leakdown test as the head is on the bench. there was no bubbles in the coolant and it wasn't loseing any
  10. i thought about a cam problem...but the one set of lobes run both banks of cylinders an the L/H side was doing its thing without a problem so i ruled out the cam its self as the problem
  11. all look good....getting new rings just in case but the bores, pistons & rings look ok. even with totaly shagged rings it should still have little bit of compression shouldn't it?
  12. i just got back to NZ....and on firing my brumby(EA81) up found that it had a distinctly tractor'ish sound to the motor....and was as gutless as a lada. it was running on only two cylinders after a little messing with what i thought was an ignition problem...... i found the following compressions #1....0 psi #3....25 psi #2....130 psi #4....130 psi i've just yanked the motor thinking i'd burnt valves or done a major on a headgasket.....got the head off and the valves look good and the headgasket hasn't been leaking. when i was cranking the motor to get the compression readings there was no 'whoosh' of air into or out of #1 sparkplug hole.....and there wasn't anywhere near the amount of air going into or out of #3 compared to #'s 2 & 4.....which got me thinking....can the hydraulic lifters stick so that a valve stays open?
  13. do you have trouble holding you right foot up? A Brumby will chew 1Ltr per Km if it is fully nailed on a tight windy gravel road....19Km....19 liters gone.....7 minutes flat:headbang:...top guys in the national rally do the same piece of road in 6:15 8mpg to go get Maccas makes for expensive fast food:lol:
  14. thats an EFI motor.....seems like thats what he trying to avoid
  15. aren't the EZ30 a variable valve timing motor....if you where to use a stand alone ECU it would have to be able to control the funky valve gear
  16. i run LPG (propane) and wouldn't switch back PRO'S: cleaner running oil doesnt get dirty like on liquid fuel high octane fuel Being a hippy motorhead CON'S: less MPG on propane tank has to be mounted somewhere finding room under bonnet to mount vapouriser can give problems in cold areas you can run dual fuel and on a fuel injected motor it shouldn't hurt you MPG on petrol or propane (converting a carb'd motor to dual fuel reduces your MPG because of the extra ventury of the propane ring) there is also propane injection systems available that duplicate your petrol injection system in operation and run a piggyback drive off your ECU.... i haven't had alot to do with these but know that the cold area problems are more of an issue as they need a propane pressure about 30psi higher that manifold pressure...and the colder the tank is the less pressure there in it...however i have seen a tank designed for use in canada(i think) that had a fuel pump in the tank to boost pressure in the cold
  17. you mentioned that you had found some rally tyres i run retreads that are a copy of the early 80's dunlop rally tread pattern 175/70r13.....haven't managed to get it stuck yet (deliberate attempts aside)....and they are unreal on gravel roads.....like scary grip levels, enough that i was able to pass a wrx on a tight gravel road i drive alot cos he had road tyres on....at the speeds he was driving out the side windows when taking the corners....my ute was hardly stepped out. 300hp is no good without traction:burnout:
  18. swap it out dude.......then open your FT box up to see whats fanged inside....
  19. You do know what Fiat stands for don't you? Fix It Again Tomorrow.....
  20. its a hitachi dude, looks the same as the one in my aussie brumby
  21. TI is bad for that.....try having engine mounts for a 1900hp Deutz break on you:eek:.....the stainless steel ones i replaced them with will last forever.... titanium don't like vibration...especially on bends and welds
  22. [start Hijack] not for much longer....found i don't like it here and have major problems getting my qualifications recognized which means i can't easley move to another part of aussie..... so i'm gapping it for home [End Hijack].....
  23. Dude.....hate to be the one to say this but you talk alot.... 3000 posts.... thats alot, makes my 350 or so look pretty sad ....and some ppl on here have asked me why i want a disty&carbyed ej motor (abet on LPG/propane)? ECU's are evil capsules of doom and all devices wired to them were invented by the devil for the express purpose of causing misery to mankind.
  24. with a machine like that thats going to take some self-control man...
