hey looking at a 1980 GL wagon...
Phizinza replied to kodiak1232003's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1: a 1980 model GL won't have AWD, it came in FWD and 4WD (the 4WD version is FWD switchable to 4WD.) Also the 4WD boxes normally have dual range (a much for offroading) 2: You can put a rear LSD in pretty easy (pulled off a 87 to 89 RX) Lockers are pretty much out of the question. Lift kits come in 3.5" from http://www.ozified.com these days and you can make anything upto 12" really, check out http://www.subarubrat.com. With a 3.5" lift kit installed you should beable to fit upto 29" tires with bashing and cutting. 27" without (I would think.) People have put snorkles on, and there are some nice custom bullbars around on this forum. Try searching the Subaru Offroad section on this forum. 3: CV joints, they seem to be the expencive thing and normally needs fixing. 4: ... see 3:? 5: the 87 to 89 RX's came in FT4WD (Full Time) which had a open center diff that could be locked via a button. Some 4sp 4WD boxes in the older models 80 to 84, 87 for Brats and Hatches, had single range only. But most seem to come with dual range. Don't expect miricals form the dual range though, it is only a 1.49 to 1 ratio (unlike the 2.5 to 1 or there abouts form big 4WD's.) Hope that helps. -
can I hook up the torbo
Phizinza replied to Mike Moore's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Because the EA82T uses MPFI and has two inlet ports on each head you cannot put the EA82T manifold on you EA82. You would hook it to your carb, but there is a fair bit of modding, and you will most likely have to rejet your carb... Best bet is to sell the stuff, and then if you want more power put a Weber on it, or a EJ. Spending money on putting a EA82T in a EA82 or EA81 isn't really worth it. -
If you want to rally cross, I say you want a turbo. I'd go with what GD said, if they are cheap enough. If you go with what SubaruJunkie is on about you should look for something like this http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=62343. That seems like a good deal, and if you do pick one up for under $1K you then have $500 to play with.

Doesn't look like it has any reinforcing on the rear... Looks like it would flex too much.. Personally, I'm not keen on the 85 to 89s... I like MY's, and old gen brats! hehe.

This makes me think... Maybe I should get a clip taking off in the dual carb EA81... Just for a bit of a show off...

... a 11,000 meter tall snorkle ... :-\
-
What does that go to? Weaponry? :-\ So Outbacks are generally more expencive. Can anyone tell me that a Outback is more capable offroad, or easier to mod?
-
If that's how you want to earn your post count.... :-\ I would say 25.5" with minimal, if any, bashing/cutting. If your serious about your offroading I would fit the 27" (26.6" in actual) Kumho's or similar. With a good offset rim they will go on with not so much work, but if the rim sticks out the body it will rub on the guard wall more.

I tell ya what, tomorrow morning I will go do the messurements for you, and post back here.. Remember I'm in Aus, so there is like 12 hours of time difference. I'll post back tomorrow.

Messed up stuff goes on in this world. It's amazing how lucky us Aussies, and other countrys like Australia, are and we don't even seem to relise it on a day to day basis. I do remember seeing a bunch of pics (might of been your club) with at least 4 Foresters. But they all looked stock. I guess they just aren't as popular as a Outback for offroading. On a side note, whats the price difference of an Outback to Forester around the world? Here in Aus the bottom of the line is like this from new, $32K for a Forester, $38K for a Outback.

The other video I done is on my site now, same page. Check it out. I had a thread here about it, but it's gone now Something about it not being "Subaru Offroad" Maybe I need to get a Subaru badge and put it on that other vehical.

Offset is a messurement made from the very center of the wheel to the actually plate that bolts to your hub.. So basiclly just messure the width of your rim, find the exact center, then messure to the bit that fits to the hub... and wha lah, you have your desired messurement. I am pretty sure possitive offset means the plate that bolts to the hub is closer to the outside of the car, and negative offset ("deep dish") means that it is closer to the middle of the car. Although, I could be wrong.

How long should clutch last?
Phizinza replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a problem with my Thrust bearing/"Throwout bearing" on my clutch too. It was too small for my pressure plate. By the look of it the replacement clutch that was put on was made for a EA82 thrust bearing (which are bigger) but it still have the EA81 bearing on it. So after a while it wore oddly and coused the thrust bearing to push on a weird angle. The only way around this I found was to get a different bearing (not even for a subaru) that had the same size inner as the EA81's but larger outter size. I pressed this onto the EA81 thrust bearing holder, and it's been working great for over 9 months now. But I am pretty sure that the poster of this thread just has a worn clutch. A replacement clutch kit will most likely fix the problem. -
Quote: scoobyclimbs > all the pics. That looks like heaven to me..... But I think driving the 8000(?)miles through all that water wouldn't go well with my subie. lol

How long should clutch last?
Phizinza replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Really it just depends on how the car has been driven to how much gear everything in it has. Clutches can last ages, or they can wear out very quick. If the last owner (or you) liked to make fast starts, do burnouts, or didn't know how the use a clutch, it could wear out pretty quick. If you start off in first and put your foot down till it gets to 6000RPM, does it slip? This is normally when the clutch is under the most pressure to perform, and more likelly to slip. I normally adjust my cable so there is a bit of slop at the top of the peddle (as in you can push it half an inch without the lever on the bellhousing moving. That should put the engauging area around the middle. -
kingbobdole is right, changing from EA82 to EA82t isn't really worth it. Putting in a EJ is. Although if you have a EA82t, or a free one in sight, have a look at the links in my post in this link http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?p=488686#post488686.

So shinny....
-
You sure do! Which ones? I have a 90 Lib with low range, but I throught it was pretty uncommen..
-
So you want 14" offroad tyres? Or 13"? you can get the Kumho M/T 27x8.5R14's (205/75R14, as some know them.) And BFG do a good A/T in 14". Toyo do a 225/70R14 in A/T and a 185/75R14 in a "Winter Tread" pattern. I've heard Toyo do a 13" Winter tread too.

Old 4 lug VW rims on subes
Phizinza replied to Elroy Jetson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh yeah... that rings a bell. Too much hassle I reckon. -
140 seem rather large... My brothers weber on his X1/9 has something like 70prim, 120sec. That is on a 1300cc, but it does rev to 7K all the time. Maybe your carb is running a little rich?
