my '98 Foz
Nice find G!!! I second what was already mentioned, doing the 2nd gen foz strut lift for tire clearance, just that plus 4EAT would make a sick commuter/DD Seems like everyone's getting a foz these days! Personally, I've been way in to Foresters for a while, but now running 2 car seats, that foz back seat (comparing to our 03 OBS') just doesn't have the space I now need :-\ Anyhoo, nice looking addition to the lineup, which one does the wife get?

Need Advice ~ Legacy Wagon
superu replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't have the unit yet, but I think it should look more like the legacy one. It's from a 1st generation forester and I'm trying to get the plastic console cover from an Aussie 2nd gen legacy so it will all look factory, but if I can't get the console, i'll just gut a hole and dress it up, OR make it an electronic-actuated push button low range! If I get a legacy console cover for it, it should look like these pix.

Need Advice ~ Legacy Wagon
superu replied to Loyale 2.7 Turbo's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHi JesZek, (I know this is old and your reply was over 2 years ago As you may recall I've been researching the dual range options for about 7 years and actively searching for about 5 or so. I have finally found a [reportedly] good used one from a forester in Australia and am having it shipped to me soon. Hopefully in a couple months I will have a dual range AWD 5-speed!! It should go pretty well on and off road!!

superu replied to MaddCelt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXdo you have to strip out the heads, or can you shave it with all the valves, springs, rings etc. in them? and ow $$ is a head shave?

superu replied to MaddCelt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI read a pretty thurough description of it but forget the source/:( The take home message I got was the ports on 1.8 heads *although maybe it was AE18....) were insufficiently narrow to allow enough flow to make an efficient 2.2 frankenmoter... And aren't EJ20 twin cams, so then thte timing belt thing would be a problem? While the EJ22 is an awesome motor i just think how super awesome it could be if it could be higher compression! Maybe 98 or 99 EJ22 pitons on an older block, then shave the heads? what do people think of that?

superu replied to MaddCelt's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX"Howbout a 91 2.2 short block in a 2004 impreza 2.5 hole heads bolted right up" So 2.5 heads on 2.2 block makes reverse frankenmotor, thus suitable for boosting, no? See if you can figure out how to make a good 2.2 frankenmotor... could you bolt EJ20 or Ej18 heads to an EJ22 for upped compression? And what are the complications of goign twin cam (EJ20, right), vs. analler ports of EJ1*...?? Just wondering if there's a good way to up the compression on a NA EJ22 a-la frankenmotor head swapo...

So. California EA82 Wheeler
FWIW, I'm told a WRX or other IMP-based rack will swap into a gen 2 legacy as well. I say this as I'm interested. My [used] LGT rack swap (about a year old, give or take) in my lifted 95 leggo is leaking as bad as the stocker was when I swapped it out. I was thinking of resealing, but who does that... Anyhoo, I know an EA82 wagon isn't a gen 2 legacy, but maybe with respect to a WRX rack, it's close enough props for the WRX rack swap!!

My '95 Legacy: Trashwagon10
Swap in a forester 5MT! 4.11s and a better overdrive 5th (.780 I believe, compared to the OB .871) I've only seen a vouple gen 1 legacy LSDs in yards. I found my CLSD here, but PAID $$$ for it! :-\ it rocks though

So. California EA82 Wheeler
That's sweet K, Which gearbox is that? Is that an EA dual range 4x4? The front cases look strangly similar to an EJ AWD gearbox. Nice work on the wheeler, it's gunna rock your work with the 2.5 in front of it!!!

here's more on my gearing experiences... 4.11s are great with 27" tires!!! I do notice a lil difference in the seat and I sure do in the shifting (a little quicker from 1 to 2 than with the 3.90s, but overall it revs up faster in all gears, i.e. more torque, better acceleration), more accurately the LACK of downshifting on grades I couldn't pull previously without downshifting in the stock 3.90 FD. EJ22 with 3.90 FD (turning 27" ATs), 70 MPH @ 3000 RPM (Actual speed 75MPH but VERY weak 5th gear with respect to hills!) EJ22 with 4.11 FD (99 OB 5MT), 65 MPH @ 3000 RPM EJ22 with 4.11 FD (99 OB 5MT), 70 MPH @ 3250 RPM EJ22 with 4.11 FD (99 OB 5MT), 75 MPH @ 3500 RPM EJ22 with 4.11 FD (99OB 5MT), 80 @ 3750ish If I remember (totally verifiable with the tranny chart), the stock 3.90 FD 5MT in my 95 leggo had a .780 ratio in 5th and the 4.11 FD 99 (gen 1 OB) OB 5MT's 5th is .871, with 1-4 being the same. Thus a slightly higher (to the tune of about 250) RPM in same speed in 5th. BUT the forester 5MTs are 4.11 and maintain the .780 5th (As do some RSs I believe). I hear there were some internals changes in the 99 OB 5MT (mine's a limited trim line OB), and a little shell difference in those generations rom my 95, but the box fit fine (a little tighter from the top of the gearbox to the tunnel in the car, but we snugged it in place fine) So, there ya go

YESSS!!! Those ARE the $#!+ My Honduran bro-in-law is always telling me about the 2-door cruisers, of all eras, and how bomber they are. Nice photo find! I'll get his opinion and post it here.. *EDIT** adding bro-in-law's $.02 on 2-door cruise, "The 2 door is a 2.8 or 2.4 turbo very fast and the ride is very smooth not like the 6 cylinder with heavy suspension nice truck!"

My '95 Legacy: Trashwagon10
copy above... in my experience: My 95 leggo was a 3.90 5MT stock. MY reverse gave up the ghost and I swapped for a 99 OB 5MT (4.11). I'd've preferred a forester (better overdrive 5th gear in the fozzie), but the OB one fell in place at the right time AND was local (w/i a 1.5 hour drive) AAAAND was the right price including the diff. The thing drives like stock now even with 27" tires!!! With my ATs and I've got acceleration and pep that I don't remember ever having (I've been on 27" ATs for nearly as long as I've owned the car). I can't imagine daily driving with 4.44s It'd just be changing gears all the time with a 4.44 stick... Off road I'm sure you'd LOOOOVE it, but honsetly most (if not all) of your miles are pavement, right? I doubt (not from experience or seeing the guts of an auto, just from knowing their WAAY different beasts) you can swap an auto's front ring and pinion into a manual. I KNOW the auto's front pinion shaft is longer than a manual's so you'd have to cut, weld then grind and hope it's straight, aligned and balanced. FWIW, you'll be giving up your 2K lb. towing capability with a stick!! I burned up my clutch hauling a thousand pound camp trailer for a few months (actually only 4 trips and one maneuvering backwards up a slight grade in the driveway). Largely toasted it backing it up the gravel pad in my driveway... Maybe 15K on the clutch, probably not even that much, and it was done!!! My wife's 03 (EJ25, 5MT) OBS could pull waaay better than my EJ22 5MT could, and they're both 3.90 [then] I'm just sayin' . . . . . . . If you like towing (and I know you do, get a newer 4EAT (4.44) or if you want a stick, get a forester 5MT and you'll be psyched!! No rear diff stuff, better highway 5th (than an OB's 5MT). It'll be easy, cheap and good! I'm pretty sure manual 4.11s drive differently and are more responsive than auto 4.11s. it's our problem free philosophy, hakuna matata!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejEVczA8PLU

Yeah i h8mud sounds familiar. Probly the only 80 from Moab there Yeah he custom built the blocks and caster correction, etc. etc. Kind of a pain but he got that figured out, for a little less than a complete pre-fab 4" kit. Thing is (out west at least) most people go 6" and he didn't want to go that big, so he got springs and figured the rest out... But sounds like you got all the weird stuff figured out, and your milder lift probably doesn't have as many of those issues to deal with. 'T looks good man!

My '92 Landcruiser: Safariwagon-II
NICE and quick... Did you ever chat with my buddy on the LC forums? I think he suggested tire siping those MTs (I now know you can't get it done locally), etc. but he's got good beta on lifting, and how the rear end shifts laterally, and how you might have to shave clearance for the front sway bar, etc. etc. (I don't remember all the specifics but I know there's is some stuff you may encounter and need to deal with) Maybe that's b/c he went custom 4" though. . . Either way, nice job, sweet turn around and direction on this one.
