  1. "Real" 4wd? EA82s also come with a D/R tranny.. plus they have the same 4wd split as EA81s.. its 50/50.. also, the 4wd doesn't drive all four wheels on an EA81 or EA82. At best, with a welded rear diff, its 3wd EA81s are not all carburated.. turbo models are MPFI. I personally prefer EA82 models. However, I believe that the approach angles and such on EA81s are better Since the original poster is in OzLand, I highly recommend the BYB board for more local info. Anyone that looks there will also note that the majority of their offroad rides are EA82 cars.. hmm.. maybe they know something we don't. I say get both
  2. CA models are a little different..for example, My motor is from a California car.. it had no EGR.. so when it went into another car, I had to swap intakes.. and suddenly it has an EGR!!.. but no hole in the drivers side head to attach the EGR pipe:rolleyes:
  3. $800 for a used 3at? Holy Price Gouging Batman!
  4. NE car with little/no rust? Unheard of! Great score man!
  5. When I did my Auto to 5 speed conversion.. I got the clutch all put together, engine in.. went to turn it over by hand just to make sure everything was lined up.. Only made it about half way around and I heard a metallic thump.. engine wouldn't turn anymore.. turned it the other way. made it about half way around.. thump, engine wouldn't turn anymore. Turns out, when I had finished putting the clutch together and pulld the rachet out, the socket had stayed on the bolt and I hadn't noticed. Had to pull the engine back out to find all this out.. what a pain. But I am sooo glad I turned it over by hand and not with the key.. that could have been messy:mad:
  6. You're welcome. And here's a link to the repair manual.. all the old school soob codes are there http://usmb.net/repair/?CurrentDirectory=FOLDER_3f29b58f4430b8.49200047/&FileType=Article&File=ARTICLE_3f2c055f4862e9.39782181.art
  7. AWWW! I thought you were talking to me:mad: Caleb! Its for you!! Bump;)
  8. Ok.. Meeky, if you have a turbo wagon(or any other FI soob), you should have a working knowledge of what that 'little black box under the steering column' is..Its the ECU Three short, three long.. code 33.. coolant temp sensor or circuit. would explain hard starts and crappy running. try locating it and cleaning the contacts. I have had to do that a few times now. on my turbowagons. Tony.. Have you checked your ECU for error codes.. your symptoms are also reminiscient of a coolant temp sensor problem.
  9. It would be a lot easier to put a D/R into a turbo car than to put a turbo motor in to your DL. Be prepared to replace the whole front wiring harness of the car. There are a few D/R turbo's out there. Steve hes one down here in Texas.
  10. Lots of them came with 5 speeds.. robs 86 turbowagon is a factory 5 speed 4wd car.... just not D/R 5 speeds.. but either way, its an easy swap.. My turbowagon used to be an auto:D
  11. - what do you guys do for cup holders? Coffe cup with a lid, between the legs:D - what do you guys do for more comfortable seats? GL-10 seats have height adjustment and lumbar support adjustment. straight bolt in swap.. I recently sent a set to the crusher, as no one wanted them - how do you guys drive around with much larger tires without changing front and rear differential gears? Ya just do. My tires are only a little bigger than stock. about 25.5 inches as apposed to the 22.5 inches that the stock tires were. I have 3.70 gears.. 3.90(which you already have) would help me a bit. - have you guys felt the need for skid plates? If you do for what components? Mine came with a facvtory skid plate to protect the oil pan. Yours being a DL might not have it. I'm sure someone here has one they would sell to you, or you can get them from the wrecking yard pretty easily. they are stout and can take a pretty good beating. Haven't really found a need for other skid plates. Hope that helps.
  12. That 'resonator' is a second catalytic converter... at least on the 4 I've had it is.. but the again, I haven't had a carb'd soob
  13. I have seen two cracked EA82T blocks in the past 2 months.. Both 88 TurboWagons.it is possible. Depending on your location, $300 Isn't bad for the car if its in good shape otherwise. Sure you can find them for $500 .. sometimes.. or you can find them for $2500.. depends on condition, location, market and what you are willing to pay. The swap is a whole lot easier than it looks. 2 nuts for the motor mounts, 4 bolts/nuts to hold the engine/tranny together, pitching rod stopper, a few winring plugs, a few vacuum hoses and the radiator and fans. not much to it at all.. done it a few times on 87 and 88 turbowagons. Last time we didn't even have a cherry picker, we just picked the motor up out of the car.
  14. A little voltage drop when accessories are turned on is normal. But your headlights shouldn't dim when your turn signals and stuff are on. your alt may be taking a crap. You can have it tested at autozone. but it may just be a loose/corroded grond somewhere. sheck your negative battery cable top begin with. then check the body and engine grounds.
  15. My mother in law is near detroit, and she has a 96 OBW. Maybe she can join the crowd too! She'll be here in texas day after tomorrow. I'l try to generate some interest in our soob madness.(The OBW is her second or third soob after all. She used to drive an 85 D/R wagon)
  16. 180 is a cooler t-stat than stock . 195 is stock(although one of my sources says 192, whats 3 degrees between friends:D). 160 is available, but in wyoming, considering how cold it gets there, I think 180 is the way to go. you said the radiator is cold.. its possible your water pumpm has gone kaput.. just a thought, wouldn't be the first person its happened to.
  17. Thats interesting.. my 87 only has one.. and my 88 only had one as well..and my 88 FSM only shows one. is your 87 an early build? does it have the hotwire or vane style MAF?
  18. It wouldn't bolt up to the trans. Wiring isn't the same. It could be done, but you would want to get a front cut with all the wiring and computer that goes with the sti, plus trans rear end and some of the suspension. Even if you could bolt it to the S/R pushbutton 5spd, all that would be good for is about 30 ft of hard acceleration then ..BOOM! This has come up quite a few times in various forms over the past couple of weeks. Do a search for further info. Specifically, look for the Ultimate RX
  19. Solenoid is going kaput. I learned the smack the starter trick years ago working on old chevys.. works great, but eventually it won't work anymore
  20. There are a few different H6's that have come out over the years. ER27. 2.7 litre XT6 motor EG33 3.3 litlre SVX motor EJ(?)30 current H6 for outbacks and forresters and such. I haven't seen one in a gen one brat, but Adam does have an ER27 in his 82 Brat.
  21. I would like to see that meeky. In mine, a normal DIN sized stereo is too wide to install with the trip computer in place. And yes, the buttons read sideways.. barely noticable since the print is so small anyway.
