In all seriousness, if you have an owner's manual for the car read it. This is 100% normal and the owner's manual tells you so. Common question. Keith

Did you buy this new or used? If you bought it new it should have come with information regaurding the extended engine warrenty that you get if you stick to the recommended service intervals and use Castrol. 100k miles for Castrol GTX, 200K miles for Castrol Synthetic Blend, and 300K miles for Castrol Syntec. Castrol Makes good oil, and as long as you save receipts and document mileages you get extra warrenty on the engine. I've been using nothing but Castrol for years, even before Subaru was. (They used to have the same warrenty deal with Quaker State) Never had any trouble. Oh, as for the greif about changing it at 1000 vs. 3000, do what you like. You can talk to a dozen different automotive professionals and get a dozen diffrent reason for and against it.(Because that's what I did) I had my STi's oil changed at 1000 and then 4000. At 4000 I even had the Syntec put it and my car doesn't seem to use a bit of oil. Keith

I just bought this 95 Legacy wagon and it is a Brighton. I'm wondering how hard it is to convert it over to power locks and possibly power windows. I guess the three big questions are: Does the Brighton have the wiring in the door already for the power locks and windows? Are the doors themselves the same with or without power? What parts other than the power bits inside the doors would I need? I'm pretty sure I know of one or two cars in junkyards that I can steel all the parts from, just a matter of knowing what to get. Well, being involved with rallying on all levels for some 10 years now, I must say that here in the US there are only about 3 people that make a living off of rallying as a driver, and sadly none of them are actually american. Some people have sponsors that help the habit and in some cases fully fund it, but they don't get paid to do it. We basically pay for all of it out of our pockets and our sponsors just sell us stuff at cost. Anyhow, this might me something my father, rallynutdon would be intersted in. I'll tell him to look for this. He's been involved with rallying a lot longer than me and has been more involved. Keith

Good Luck! I've had several friends (5) that bought Brand New VW's in the past two years and only one still has their car. All the other's traded them in for a car from Japan. VW has been having some serious quality issues in the past few years. Good news is the only person I know that has kept there car has a Jetta TDI. The TDI seems to be the best of the bunch, so good luck and I hope you don't have any trouble. None of this is to say that SUBARU is perferct or doesn't have any problems, but it just seems that from what I've seen through friends VW hasnt been to great lately. Keith

http://www.rallylights.com I will only buy Hella lights. I've bought the cheap stuff at walmart and autozone, and you get what you pay for. Hella lights can be expensive but you get some seriously good lighting. There are a lot of things that go into making a good light. Lens design and material, and reflector design and material. Hella uses only glass lenses for the best optics and only metal for the reflectors to get the most reflected light output. Also, Hella has some really good mounting solutions. No bouncing lights on your car, as long as they are mounted to something solid. When purchasing any light it is always key to remember that the smaller the lense the less light you get out. (In other words there is a reason that rally/off road lights are BIG.) Susquehanna MotorSports Carries a very wide selection of Hella lighting, including several forms of true HID, map lights, and replacement bulbs (like higher power headlamp bulbs), all at great prices. This IS the place where motorsports people get their stuff. From Rally, to Baha, to LeMans teams. http://www.rallylights.com Keith Kennedy PS- No I don't work for them.... Yet

Sounds like you're not going anywhere until they get that bridge fixed. What happened there and how close to you/your shop was the blaze? (Tanker trunk carrying fuel oil crashed into a car and caught on fire on I-95 in Bridgeport, CT. Melted the steel structural beams for the bridge it was on.) Keith

Bulbs
RallyKeith replied to hawksoob's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
let me just clarify one thing for you. The backup bulb should be an 1156. 1156 = single element like used for reverse) 1157 = dual element (Like used in most american cars as parking and stop) Keith -
My friend is looking at a 98 Forester L with the 2.5 DOHC engine. Car has 99910 miles on it and comes with the complete maintainance history. The Head Gaskets have never been placed. I'm thinking that if the head gaskets haven't gone by now that there is a good chance they won't be a problem. What do you guys think? Destine to be a problem or a good chance they won't. Keith

Ouch.

CV joints have in and out movement so I can pretty much gaurentee that there is no damage to the rear diff. As for the wheel bearing it isn't likely that it would be damaged by this either, but it is something to be checked. If nothing else making sure that the axle nut doesn't need tightening. The important thing to check and what usually is the first to be messed up is the lateral link. This is the bar that comes straight out from the diff carrier and connecs to the bottom rear of the spindle assembly. For What is's worth: didn't damage the diff or the wheel bearing. Broke the hub assembly and turned the lateral link from a straight piece of metal into something the shape of an S! Video of it is here. http://www.rockyroadracing.com/events/2003/maine/kennedy1.avi Keith -
Are you 100% Hard Core SUBARU?
RallyKeith replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Who ever said it was blind? I've owned, driven, and maintained lots of different cars. So far Subaru is at the top by a fair ammount in a lot of places. That's not to say that all other cars are bad. I stand strongly by FORD for their full size trucks and vans, and Honda for building cheap cars that go fast, handle weel, and get good gas mileage. Keith -
If nothing else you can get used transmissions for $1000 or less, and it would only take a regular mechanic 4-6 hours to replace. That brings the total to a much more practical dollar amount of around $1500 tops. I would look for a place that specializes in transmissions and take it there. Something like a AAMCO. Keith

AAAAAAH!!! Car break in!
RallyKeith replied to SuperRallyRoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In Jersey they don't mess with 20 year old Subarus. They are out there stealing WRXs right and left! Sorry to hear about it, but it's a good thing you had that safety. I do something of that nature when I park my STi places I don't trust. Keith -
Find a small parts place and ask for a universal sensor. I bought one for my del Sol at a fraction of the price. They usually come as a four wire, but have instructions on how to wire it as anything. All it really requires you to do is cut the connector assembly off the original and splice it into the wires from the universal sensor. Best luck, Keith

Dude, everyone needs to take this quiz!

who's that dis'n the Justy?!
RallyKeith replied to RallyJusty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What makes you think that? My justy got 32mpg on a 45 mile commute with most of the miles being stop and go and only about 15 being real highway cruising. I think the time I took it to Vermont it got around 37. My justy also had about 130k on the clock. Oh, and it had no trouble going 75mph. Unless you've owned one or driven one for more than a day, you don't know anything. I've owned them all but an XT and the justy was just as good a good car as any. Keith -

RallyKeith replied to RallyJusty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Um Bad new for ya. The justy wasn't under powered. The car was just as fast as a standard GL. Yes it had less Horse power, but it also had a lot less weight. I owned one for a while and loved it. I even let friends borrow it and they just couldn't believe how quick it was and how fun it was to drive. The seats were comfortable and there was plenty of leg room. Justy was a great replacement for the hatchback in the Fuel conscious economy of the time. I used to get 32mpg in my justy and I had the carbed model. The Fuel Injected models had more power and got better gas milage. The justy is a great car. Keith
