  1. The EA82 (not sure about EA81) has 9 tappet cover bolts. If you look carefully each bolt has a rubber/copper (??) washer on it. Over time these will wear and leak. If your changing the gasket it might be worth your while to get these washers for $10-$25 to help stop the leak.
  2. Hey Brumby Boy, i'm thinking of painting a car, are you sanding it and painting it yourself? Are you going to use Acrylic paint? Got an tips or info you could share?
  3. The BMW looks nice. I don't like red cars, and i've only ever seen red, beighe and white brumby's. Whatever you choose, it'll stick out. p.s. That cat avatar is just the coolest ever! I don't like cats... but thats awesome!
  4. I would definately recomend taking the three front timing covers off and inspecting the timing belts. Take the spare wheel off, there will be a little plastic cover where the engine meets the gearbox, take this off (flywheel cover). Turn the engine until you find 3 marks with 1/4" of each other. Get the marker to point to the middle one. At the front of the engine one of your cam pulleys marks should be pointing directly up. With 1 full rotation the other pulley should point directly up. No variation is acceptable, these have to be spot on for the engine to run smooth.
  5. Where did you buy it from? Sometimes you will find components for older cars will be listed incorrectly on the computer. Go back there, and demand to have a look at the book and to see what clutch it lists for your car. Perhaps a visit your Subaru dealer and get the real thing?
  6. The shuddering is caused by an out of balance wheel. It will occur over a certain speed like you say, just take it to a (good) tire place and get the front tyres rebalanced (say $20 - no more imo). A weight may have fallen off your new wheels or something to cause it...
  7. I'd be buying a new set of spark plug leads...
  8. I got mine taken off. Replaced with 2.5" stainless steel pipe for half the price of putting another resinator on there. Sounds better without it. Didn't stop or make my backfire any worse. Still running stock muffler and cat. I reckon it gave me about 40 miles extra/tank too. But it was fairly stuffed though...
  9. Well Ross, you could try a google search for online genuine subaru parts. Its a lot cheaper, but when i went to 1stsubaruparts.com they were going to charge me $185US to ship one part (ASV) to Aus.
  10. I just leave my lines disconnected. Makes the job easier next time, and i found that the brakes were only slowing me down:cool: *legal disclaimer: not advisable!*
  11. Hi, not sure if you've heard of it but the current issue of Speed has a review of computers for performance mods. Thought you might be interested... Other then that, i've got nothing.
  12. Probably the little black plastice thing sitting above it. It's the silencer, maybe its seen its last days. Try replacing it with a 2nd hand one that looks good if its not too expensive. Because its only a guess...
  13. You just need to block the pipe so air doesn't inject into the exhaust. Me, having the same problem... won't be doing this. I've read somewhere on the message board it will stuff you cat completly... i think it overheats and you'll lose power. So its only a temporary fix. You can try pulling the Anti suction valve off, pulling it apart cleaning the reed valves and putting it back together. Or Shawn has this $10 fix for the problem... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=72 (if you do, can you grab two and post one to me, its a SOA part not available in Aus.) If you leave it, the backfiring will melt the silencing which will go stuff the carb then stuff your valves. So the quarter trick will be better then leaving it backfiring...
  14. I think... find a brown or black box. I think as you look at the car it will be on the left hand side chasis near the wheel. Mine is on the right connected to the radiator overflow tank. (87 Sedan) Look for something 1/2" wide 2.5" high and 2" long. It will be pretty much split in half (vertically) with some clips at the end to remove the top cover. There will be three or so fuse links. They're color coded. If any of them don't link up/broken then you will need to replace them, then you're off... as long as you don't have any short circuits in which case the link will burn again and you need to take it to a technican. I think a good place to start looking in general is within a foot of your battery. They are (almost) always close to the battery. Goodluck.
  15. That article by Miles is useful. Have you got the two cams 180 degree out from each other. I haven't done a belt change, but the left hand drive cam goes on first... pointing up... one revolution of the engine back to the mark, left hand side cam pointing down do the right hand side cam with it pointing up. One full revolution and the left hand side cam should be lining up with the mark on the cover. So with piston one at tdc (which is the other markings on the flywheel), the left hand side cam (which is on the right as you look at it) should be at about 1:30 and the right hand one at about 10:30.
  16. Check you're muffler is well attached. Thats the only other thing i could add.
  17. I had the pressure cleaner to it to clean it up. I made sure the electrics didn't get wet... but didn't protect the dipstick.
  18. Ok, thanks for your help. I'll see what i can chase up. I might do a couple of oil changes and see if i can get that additive.
  19. Too late for that, but i haven't driven it too far... and i won't be until it gets changed.
  20. Is there anything special i should do to get the water out of my engine? I'm going to drain it out and put some new oil in tomorrow. I can't get seafoam here, but will this be enough of should i consider additives or do something special? Someone put water down the dipstick... Thanks in advance.
  21. I like these pictures... http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid111/p8817defe14f91804dcf92d74c11c80df/f91305c1.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid165/pc3db19a49833d3978aa9b42c4fe77105/f464f8a5.jpg I think the second one proves one thing... Its not how the car looks after the accident... its how the occupants are. They both walked away, and won the next race, leading from start to finish!
  22. Ok, Subaru said this genuine part is $540. I could get an entire engine for that money! And to add insult, it may not even fix it!!

  24. Karinvail, did you do the fix with the $20 valve? I would like to see it assembled on the vehicle. I don't understand what parts to put where...:-\
