91 legacy overheat?
heartless replied to Dannomanno's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXjust a thought, but are we sure we installed the thermostat in the correct direction?? and yes, car MUST get up to full operating temp to make sure it is completely full of coolant (low coolant levels - air in system - will create overheating issues) do as Noah suggested - make SURE the system is full AND that it is circulating properly. Turn heater ON and temp all the way to hot side. Once it is completely full and fully warmed up check the radiator hoses & hoses going to heater core - if any are cold you have... 1. a clog somewhere 2. thermostat installed wrong way - or 3. failed water pump? (not necessarily in that order...)

how does a '91 legacy measure up?
heartless replied to crazyman03's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe pics are a bit grainy to make out what it says on the right side of the rear reflector bar- BUT - (we only have the one wagon) it says AWD right under where it says Legacy - on the left side as seen here

96 Legacy engine codes and running issues
heartless replied to Sternrulez's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXas Olnick already said - start with the ECTS, plugs and wires - ie: the cheap/easy stuff first. Also check the battery cable ends, and ground contacts (known issues on these cars) I had some corrosion buildup on my car's pos cable that caused some starting issues - cleaned it all up (took off that little cover on the pos cable) coated everything with a film of dielectric grease and have had no problems since. Then if you are still having starting problems we can dig a little deeper. Hudson PA is a little far for me too - Hudson WI, on the other hand, would have been easy - only a couple of hours. as for the coil pack - yeah, they dont fail very often, but it does happen. My suggestion for that, if you are bound and determined to change it, would be a used pack from a junkyard (cheap)

96 Legacy engine codes and running issues
heartless replied to Sternrulez's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually, the coolant temp sensor should be VERY easy to get to. Where exactly are you?? Hudson, where?? I am sure there is probably a USMB member near enough to you that could help you out and save you the crazy labor costs of a shop for something so simple. I understand that being disabled may/may not preclude you from it doing it yourself, but it really is a pretty simple job.

My '95 Legacy: Trashwagon10
Boy, you got ripped! I only paid $22 + tax for mine @ Fleet Farm!! Nice heavy duty oval can, 2" ID on either end - one side is offset, one side centered - can be mounted either direction, depending on your needs. Just enough rumble to sound good, but not so much that your ears start ringing on a longer trip Gotta love them Cherry Bomb's!! Tried the 30% on Hildy - it wasnt really dark enough for me, but it was ok. Decided this time I am going all the way with it - full on, heat reflective, 5% Limo tint!

My '95 Legacy: Trashwagon10
Some people's kids! I swear!! besides, wouldnt do that - wouldnt want to scare anyone!! no, my pics are of the vehicular type... The "cool" factor - times 2 - 5% Limo Black with 67% heat reflection!! Looks good and helps keep the interior cooler! Still need to get the rear hatch window done, but both sides are done & it DOES make a difference... second pic is "just because" - got that little sticker with the muffler & just had to put it on, hehe. and yes, the car is dirty - a Subaru is supposed to be, isnt it?

* Plan Change *(see post #1) Iowa Campout Weekend... (anyone from Midwest is welcome)
Dang, this sounds like a fun time - too bad we (madkow & I) wont be able to make it - too many things going on here & no extra money for extended road trips. Only road trip we get to do these days is down to Madtown to get Madkow's folks moved - what fun! (NOT) :-\ Dont forget to take lots of pictures so you can taunt those of us that didnt get to go with how much fun we missed out on...

That is just cold, Scott! LOL leave the boy alone! he is having fun with his new toy. Tom - the Lego is lookin good, altho I'm not sure i like the lighter colored trim panels on the dash - but that is personal preference - if you like it, it's all good. I am a little jealous tho - you have a cargo net AND a cargo cover! I want a cargo cover!! *pouts* But - I do have something you dont - yet...hehehe

fuel options
heartless replied to daddycoolj's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHonestly, you may think you are saving money but in reality - eh, not so much. It is a proven fact that the E85 fuel gets lower miles per gallon than the common 10% ethanol fuels do. so sure, you save a few cents at the pump, but, you would be going back more often (fewer miles) so essentially you are not saving anything and possibly causing damage to and/or reducing the lifespan of your engine & its components since they are not actually designed to run on this fuel. from an article at cars.com: link to full article: cars.com and another article: Why fuel mileage drops with E85

how does a '91 legacy measure up?
heartless replied to crazyman03's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXoverall, not too bad looking - no roofrack & steelies - means pretty basic, bare bones model - gonna take a wild guess and say it is only a FWD version (but i could be wrong) - but even at that, they can still handle a lot of rough weather - and get better gas mileage than the AWD! hope you can get her home soon!

how does a '91 legacy measure up?
heartless replied to crazyman03's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXno problem on the measurement - only took a minute to throw down the tape measure. sorry cant help ya on the trailer tho - we have a sweet dual axle trailer, but a tad too far away for it to be useful for you.

Spark Plug Changing 101 Questions
heartless replied to axel's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXas mentioned in an earlier post - if they are the original wires they can be baked on to the plug pretty well and should be changed anyway. that said, try giving the boot a twist to break it free from the plug end. may equire a little effort... alternatively, a pair of hose pliers can sometimes help things along by giving a better grip...

how does a '91 legacy measure up?
heartless replied to crazyman03's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXactually went out and measured my 1990 Legacy LS wagon... tire wall to tire wall is about 65 in - or 5 ft 5 in - so there ya go. your 91 should be exactly the same (depending on tire size/width) and yes, in the early 90's Legacy's came in both AWD or FWD versions - so check the rear end. Madkow has a Legacy L sedan that is FWD, my wagon is AWD - same year (and we have 3 parts cars - 90's & 91's - FWD and AWD - forget which is which tho).

"E-code" headlights
have you tried the Sylvania Silver star series bulbs??? they throw much better light than the standard 9004 bulb. also, take a good look at the inside of the headlight housing - if the silver inside is in bad shape it wont throw good light regardless of bulb type.

Overheating on '89 GL
just a couple of thoughts for when you refill the system... 1. get the front end up in the air - preferably with the filler neck a little higher than the rest - this will help get the air bubbles up and out of the system. (and they can be a bugger to get ALL air out of!) 2. DO NOT use regular tap water in your cooling system!! either buy the premixed 50/50 antifreeze (best choice), or use distilled water to mix. Even city water from the tap will have some minerals in it that are the root of radiator clogs! (well water is even worse!) Good luck! hope your CLR treatment works.

T'sunami Wagon
- New WI Suby owner!
Aww, thanks Ben! you're pretty Ok yourself!- Suby ... but just the heart
Welcome to the USMB! Very cool you have not just one, but two VW's with Subaru motors!! They are the best motors around!!- New WI Suby owner!
Wish I could go - But - cant afford to go much of anywhere these days - and besides, we have to move the other half's folks that weekend. :-\ So, call me lame if you must, but responsibilities take priority... Hope you guys have a GREAT time tho.- New WI Suby owner!
Hey new Wisconsin members!! Yeah!! Welcome aboard! Dancin dan - I gaurantee you code 32 is O2 sensor on the first gen Legacy - just went thru that with my 1990 Legacy wagon not even 2-3 weeks ago! (btw - I am only about an hour from you - a little southwest of Abbotsford - so if you need any help, just yell!) You can get a perfectly good replacement from Advance Auto for under $100 - go to thier website - print out the part page with the price (get the direct fit replacement one - NOT the "easy fit" one that requires you to splice the plug on - should be $89.99) then go to your local store to get it (may need to order, but it should be in the next day.) you will need a 22mm offset box end wrench to get the old one out & new one in. Very easy job.- AWD newbie question
sounds like classic torque bind to me. First - are all tires the same brand, style, wear and all inflated the same? if not, get them that way! AWD is very fussy about tire diameters - they all need to be as close to the same as possible. Do the XT's have the FWD fuse holder like the Legacy's do? (fuse holder on the Lego is under the hood by the passenger strut tower) If so, try putting a fuse in there (10 amp works fine) and see if the problem goes away or not. lots of info on torque bind in the new gen forums - sometimes an easy fix, sometimes not.- T'sunami Wagon
I hate you! (j/k) such a nice clean wagon!! no body rust visible anywhere - must be nice! The lift is looking absolutely AWESOME!! and yeah, you need to get some rubber in them there wheelwells! they look too empty! looking forward to seeing more!- How Difficult Is It to Remove GL Grille?
would recommend you scuff the "bare shiny metal" bits with some fine sandpaper (400-600 wet/dry) to give the paint a good grip - or you will be back to "bare shiny metal" in no time. you dont need to create "visible" scratches, but the paint will stick a lot better if the surface is "roughed up" a bit before spraying. - New WI Suby owner!
