Well, it sounds unlikely that the fuel pump itself is bad, since you've had several in there. But it does sound to me like it is fuel pump related since it will start if the fuel pump runs. You could have a flaky fuel pump relay or a broken wire in the fuel pump circuit that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Or it could be the ECU (Engine control unit), which controls the fuel pump relay. If there's anything else to check, there are others that know these cars extremely well and should be able to help figure this out.

Do you mean that the blue wagon in the picture is the ACTUAL car you're going to cut up? If I had a wagon with a body that nice I'd make it my daily driver. Actually, it would probably be my wife's daily driver and I'd get to drive her starting-to-rust wagon instead of my Geo. I've got a really rusty but revivable parts car in NY state I'd trade and you could cut it up

Here's a third way The seals I put in when I did my bearings didn't really have a flat side. On one side was the groove that has the spring in it. The other side had a ridge or lip or flap. Because of this flap it was possible to put the seal in only one way. When assembled this lip rode along the CV joint (inner bearing) or rotor (outer bearing).

The only time I've driven on the beach was in a stock Loyale, without letting the tires down . So I expect an Outback would do even better. But Scott is right about the fluff - that's where I got stuck. In my case I was in 2wd on pavement in 3rd gear, and it was like, "Uh oh, the pavement's ending! OK, I can engage 4wd without stopping. Oh yeah, need to get the wheels straight. Oh rats, I stalled it." And with single range and relatively low ground clearance I stalled it a couple more times before a couple of bystanders laughed heartily and pushed me out. I'd like to think I could have gotten it out, since I hadn't spun the tires, but I was glad for the push all the same But once that part was over, the rest was a blast, and of course I took pictures to use for my avatar  .

A while back I suddenly was getting an exhaust smell at idle whenever the climate controls were on anything but A/C max. It went away when I tightened the cap. I expect exhaust gases from the crankcase were getting into the A/C intake.

Remote tailgate release on ea-82 wgns?
msteel replied to starkiller's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The latch and lock mechanisms both use the same basic rod mechanism, don't they? A power lock motor might be fairly easy to mount and connect to the latch rod. But I have doubts about whether it would have enough oomph to operate the latch. -
Really Stoopid Things We Have Done
msteel replied to subbum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There was the time when, while reinstalling the crankshaft pulley, I used a metal rod in a hole in the flywheel to keep the crankshaft from turning. I finished and removed the rod. It slipped out of my fingers...right into the bellhousing. How about the flexible claw tool? Couldn't find anything. Hmm...what about a magnet on a stick? Tried to fasten one on a dowel. Almost left it on the flywheel. Got a real telescoping magnet tool. Pulled out some sort of clip. Wondered what it did. Hoped it wasn't very important. Thought maybe it the rod would just sit on the bottom happily. Drove the car a while. Heard strange noises occasionally. Decided it couldn't be left alone. Tried to separate the engine and transmission. Couldn't get them apart. Finally noticed that little access plate in one of the diagrams in the manual. Wasn't pleased to find that it was smack on top of the engine crossmember, but undid the motor mounts and jacked the engine up. Two screws later, the rod came falling out onto the ground. A very nice sound that was! I'm much more willing to try a complicated job now as a result of that experience. Several years later that clip is still on my desk. I'm sure sombody here knows what it does. I hope it's not important. -
90 loyale auto tranny noise buzzing?
msteel replied to newsubee's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
One thing that comes to mind is the time I dropped something down into the bellhousing and the flywheel teeth would make it buzz. -
Is that frappicino, or frothy oil???
msteel replied to Mantonite's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found "froth" on my oil fill cap too for a while when it was cold. I just wiped it off and haven't had a problem. No sign of oil or antifreeze where it doesn't belong - except a drip or two on the driveway. A little bit of it belongs there, doesn't it? -
EA82 (Others?) Cam Pulley Tool
msteel replied to pappy52's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Take a piece of paper and put it on your cam pulley. Then use a pencil or similar to mark the holes and you have a perfect template. -
EA82 (Others?) Cam Pulley Tool
msteel replied to pappy52's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a tool my father in law welded up but I can't find it anymore . Next time I do the timing belts I might have to build one like yours. Thanks for showing it to us. -
How long have you owned your EA81 / EA82?
msteel replied to GLCraig's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Our '92 Loyale was bought new by my wife's parents; it's been in my care about 8 years. -
As I recall, there was a guy named Matt who called in to CarTalk a couple of Saturdays ago with a Loyale with a nonfunctioning shoulder belt. That wouldn't be you by any chance, would it? There is a way to move the shoulder belts if the motor is bad (or disconnected). At the bottom of the pillar behind the drivers seat there is a trim plug that should pop off. There will be a six-sided allen wrench type hole. Turning that will move the belt, unless there is a mechanical problem with it. You probably even have the the special tool for this purpose. Look for a pouch snapped to the carpet just in front of the rear seat. If you put the belt into the "in use" position you could at least buckle/unbuckle it manually at the door and be safe until you get it replaced (or you might get used to it...) Matt

I remember reading that GLs had a cargo light, I assume in the hatch part of a wagon model. Does anyone know how easy it would be to add one to a Loyale? Was it just a second dome light in the back? Is the mounting hardware or wiring harness there on a Loyale?

'92 (SPFI) Loyale wagon, 5MT pushbutton 4WD. 22mpg Town, 32+ Highway -
I have a used but working solenoid here in SC if you can't find any closer. PM me if you need it. Vacuum solenoids can also be repaired as follows: find a hollow metal cylinder with an inside diameter similar to the inside of the plastic nipple. My father in law used a roll pin. I used the hollow center pin from an RCA audio connector. Then drill out the nipple a little bit so the metal piece will just fit inside. Then glue the plastic and the metal will take most (who knows, maybe all) of the strain. The 4WD solenoid my father in law repaired is still going more than 7 years later. Unfortunately the one I repaired was found to be defective electrically, so I bought a parts car and got some other needed parts at the same time...

My wife can't complain too much, because "my" Loyale was originally her dad's and she got it when she needed a car away at college. He had two or three other Subarus before the Loyale and now drives an Outback. My wife is actually better at spotting Subes than I am. But I'm the one who always wants to buy them!

these are called touring wagons....right??
msteel replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No, not a legacy. But it IS close....to me [evil grin]. I'm trying to decide how much I'd be willing to bid on it. But that brings up a question [Thread Hijack starts here]: I'm really only familiar with my Loyale wagon. Are there any significant differences between the GLs and the Loyales? -
Power steering pump leaking
msteel replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Also check the bolts that mount the reservoir to the pump. Mine got loose once and dumped fluid like crazy. -
92' Loyale ticking. Will this fix it??
msteel replied to Slagathor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had ticking that was due to a bad front camshaft seal. It was leaking badly enough that either not enough oil or oil pressure was getting to the lifters. It sounds like you have the engine apart enough to tell pretty easily if that is the problem. -
Please go away stupid Code 34!!
msteel replied to buru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you replace with a used one, be aware that they can check out good, but fail when they get hot. My purge control solenoid did this. I took it out with the engine hot, and it wouldn't do a thing. Some minutes later it worked fine. Put it back in with a vacuum pump on it and it konked out after the engine ran a few minutes. -
Will it fit? & 92 SVX Parting out
msteel replied to patkennedy78's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know the answer to your question (I suspect it would fit), but I have an OEM radio from a '92 Loyale. It's in working order, but has a couple of crackked knobs. If you're interested, make an offer. I am in South Carolina. Matt -
I use a Pittman arm puller instead of a pickle fork. I borrow tools using AutoZone's free loan-a-tool program. One more thing-do everything you can to keep the pinch bolt from breaking. My job was a lot harder because of a broken bolt. Matt
-
If it quit suddenly it could also be the clutch or I suppose the compressor. Oops! I re-read your post and since you just bought the car you don't know if it quit suddenly or not. Still worth checking, though.

Drill Bits for Hardend Steel Bolts?
msteel replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You could swap out the knuckle - I did one on my Loyale recently. Mine had the balljoint bolt broken from way back, and the strut pinchbolt broke taking the knuckle off. So be careful! I chose the swap route since I had a parts car available. If you can get the entire axle/bearings/knuckle/balljoint in one piece in good shape, it should be easiest. In my case I put a new balljoint and bearings/seals in, so it was more work.
