Following on the heals of Gloyale's "Sometimes you've gotta "engineer" a solution." We old farts have what are called "senior moments". This pict speaks for itself Note: hard to see the small tag on the chain, it states the mileage of the last oil change.

Please see this post esp #18 by Gloyale verify you have enough vacuum http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78136&highlight=cruise+control

You're most welcome. Just a thought as you most deffinitly have your ducks in a row! Could you connect the timing light to a jump box? This and the comp test Cougar mentioned may give some insight. I'm sure you checked for spark, so the ig amp and coil and dist screw are all mute points.

excellent, well done sir. I'm sure you know these three marks puts the piston all in their midway travel in their bores. You could use one of these for the timing op

I just have to ask for the benefit of others doing their timing belts. Please describe the flywheel marks you used for the timing belt setting. Do you have access to a timing light?

possibly the height sensors inside the shock (magnetic reed switches I believe) are not connected or faulty.

BB, I know you know your stuff, but how do you know it was the ignition? If it was under fueled at this time (fuel delivery problem) would it not act the same? We do have an over boost cut off like the older turbos. Vrg3 has a by pass circuit. You might want to try asking over on Leg Central http://bbs.legacycentral.org/ Some really good techs over there.

Hi xoomer, I feel your pain I loved my XT 6 Problems like this with no CEL sure can get frustrating. Sounds a"fuelish" to me Have you looked at the MAF by chance? Maybe the FPR* is knackered. (*Fuel Pressure Regulator) How old is the 02 sensor? If you have not asked here http://www.subaruxt.com/forum/ I would do so. Not much help I know but...

No, I own several high mielage 4EATs none do this. It sounds like a line pressure problem in the tranny. There is a solenoid that controls this. Older 4EATs had a resistor by the pass side strut tower, if disconnected what you describe would occure. I don't have a wring diagram for your TCU, sorry. The "temp" light doesn't flash when you start it, does it? Subaru used to sell a tranny fluid conditioner for 4EATs. My recco'd first step would be to have a complete tranny fluid change done at a shop with a BG flush machine such as this.

Mr. Greenly sir, Congrats to you for this "I'm not a complete bozo and am motivated to learn" I had to repair the same problem with my EA81 shifter an what GD says is true to some end but my fix has lasted for three years and shows no signs of getting sloppy. I did my fix by working in the car and under it no tranny removal was ness. No welder needed but a hack saw (saws all) and vise is nice. If you would like to try this, I will do the search for the article or post pictures of the proceedure. Here is one but not the one I had in mind. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49954 The Fix#1 line in the article is shown here. I also made mine a "short shift" with the mods shown so please ignore the "raised..." and "spacer" items Hope this helps

Sorry if this has been mentioned but the thermoswitch in the rad provides the ground for the fan on these model Subes therefore the rad needs grounded A small sometimes ignored wire does this. Make sure the wire is intact.

Nice job on the write up Dave! You no doubt have posted it before and I missed it. Many thanks for the contribution!! I have also used Honda's unit with great success. (sorry I'm not the throw the resistor in and forget it type)
