I hate to give your boyz a wake up call but IF that Honda had a turbo'd V TEC properly tuned (rich black smoke says AF ratio may want adjusted) You will need a WRX or STi to beat him. I drive a somewhat modified EA82T http://www.westol.com/neper/willyslump.jpg and have been smoked bad buy one of these.

My first inclination is the repair shop is feeding her a baloney sandwich. Sounds to me like the voltage regulator is causing a high voltage situation. This will burn out lamps and could cause the ECU to get it's panties in a bunch. The result could be hesitation or eventually a french fried ECU. Easy test is to purchase a voltmeter that plugs into the cig lighter. She can then monitor the charging voltage to see if this is the situation when these problems arise.

GG I believe the gentleman has a manual shift tranny Redline is an excellent choice for the the tranny (transaxle/ front diff) but the rear diff can use normal gear oil ( unless it's an LSD unit)

Another request for diagnostic help EA82 Update 1-25-06
Skip replied to hush777's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Since you have spark the driver side T-belt must be there but It is showing signs of a possible jump, one tooth at first now several teeth, could be a tensioner gone south. Get a timing light on it, it will flash (green connectors connected) even with the starter turning it. May want to pull the plugs - easier on the starter -
FI coolant sensor would be my first guess two wire unit fitted to the upper rad hose gooseneck can be checked with an ohm meter Sorry I don't have the resistance vs temp chart, but I can email you the values

my bet is wrong diff ratios someone swapped in the EA82 tranny and left the EA81 rear diff

Sir Loyal, thank you for not taking offense at my fun poking you are correct I would rate them slightly above the Underwear (Haynes) manual though.

New member, 94 Loyale 4WD Releasing?
Skip replied to SubyRan3's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ran, The EGR code is for open windings in the EGR control solenoid. It has nothing to do with the valve or the vacuum needed to activate it. Follow the rubber line from the valve it will end at the solenoid. Check for open windings with a multimeter. The 4wd issue could be vacuum or more likely the cable or engagement lever on the tranny. It could be frozen or jammed from ice, snow or... You will find the vacuum motor / diaphragm by following the rubber lines from the control solenoids. This pair of solenoids are located under the hood on the shelf in front of the drivers side hood hinge. Hope this helps -
One word silicone try this link http://www.samcosport.com/us/home.asp hope this helps

Tales of the elusive "Clymans manual" are found all over the Inet. Some have been rumored to have been seen swimming in the Bay of E(vil)... but no such critter has ever been landed. Now it's cousin the Clymer Manual has been reported to have issues with properly identifying parts and procedures. Please excuse the sarcasm, I prefer the FSM

V, The tranny (4EAT) is totally electronic in reference to the shift patterns. It sounds to me like the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) is not happy with the 4EAT Dan sold you. I could be a wiring interface issue. Do you see the "POWER" light flashing upon start up? The TCU will give you error codes if ask to do so.

HELP! Should I buy this car? ? questions ? - help!
Skip replied to wgngal's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wgngal That price is pretty close to top dollar for a normal GL It better be real clean with fresh rubber and 4 wd. The power steering reservoir? I have seen the seal for the pumpleak but not the reservoir itself - maybe cracked? The tail pipe extension - maybe there is no place to stick the probe? Good Luck I would go to http://www.kbb.com and find out what this car is worth in your area -
Sir Andrew to quote a famous lady " I got a Christmas card from you today.....Thank You so much.." Happy Holly Daze to you and yours

78 Brat: note of thanks to Biffanyus

Thanks Jason but this kind of throws me "cam and followers" Now you either mean "lifters" or you and Tommy have developed a new style OHC EA71? ;^) and yes there are extra cams and lifter assemblies in the parts stash but only one piston? The engine runs real sweet....... now that the choke is held open with a bit of a locust tree - there is a carb and manifold in the stash - hoping the choke element is good Need to do some trouble shootin' to see why the auto choke is not opening - and please, I will not convert to a manual choke. A Weber DGAV maybe ? Does anybody know where the "Y" pipe develops cracks? (still has the heat shields so I can't see where the break is). Once again I thank yins for all the input Happy Holly Daze -
My understanding, and it may be flawed, is that the TCU watches VSS1 and VSS2 VSS1 (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is connected to the rear drive VSS2 is in the speedometer head. When there is a difference in the two pulse counts, it then begins to reduce the duty cycle signal, thus draining less pressure and allowing more transfer of power to the rear drive. I have been recently working on putting LEDs on each of the six solenoids that are in the transmission. I also have a couple oscilloscopes, one of which is a Mac Tools Automotive model. I will have a tap to watch the DS c for the rear drive and the other solenoids that are fed duty signals. I would ultimately like to have my horn buttons wired to shift the transmission manually. The thought of a variable torque split was also in my plans.

Mary, Haven't seen that particular postcard. I fished this unit out of the Bay of E(vil) a couple years ago. Still all original (including decals) but the engine is a bit tired. I just bought a brand new Subaru (Robins) 8.5 HP OHV lump for it. Hopefully see it and the Tommy Brat at Calisle this year. It would be my esteemed pleasure to give you a ride in either. Jason, I did get some engine parts but the parts you speak of (cam followers) probably went to Shane. He bought Tommy's 82 with the EA82 in it. -
DS C acts something like a fuel injector where the fuel injector is fed a duty cycle type signal and passes gas DS C is fed a a similar signal and passes hydraulic fluid to the reservoir. Both in proportion to the length of the pulse in the duty cycle signal. This fluid pressure is now getting past the clutch pack and so the power that is transferred to the rear drive is regulated. BTW 3AT's have a lever that shifts the rear drive in and out of operation This lever is controlled by a vacuum diaphragm via a cable. This vacuum diaphragm is controlled by a normal solenoid that controls the vacuum to the diaphragm. The button on the shift lever controls the electric signal (pure DC) to the solenoid. This system is 50/50 when the lever is moved to it's 4wd position

Thanks Shane. You got a mighty fine deal on the EA82 82. Good luck with it. I have already committed to getting the 78 squirted professionally. She will take her place as one of my pride and joys in my pride of Brats.(5 1/2 and counting) She even has a tow hitch for towing the Brat gokart (1/2) on it's trailer. Wish they could be the same color but I can't bring myself to change either from their factory colors. Happy Holly Daze to all -
I went and picked up Tommy's Brat today. Little over a hundred and twenty five mile drive to the storage facility from his place. She drove like a dream, even though we had white out snow in some places, sunshine in others. Before we left, I put a new T stat in her and used a stick to hold open the choke as the element is bad or.... Tommy is one kewl dude, a pleasure to deal with, and I sure hope he stays connected with our community after he moves back to Fla. Just have to say thanks and props to such a great guy and a nice Brat that has seen it's last snow fall for as long as I own it - which will be a long time. Thanks again mate, happy holly daze and good luck with the move.
