mpfi injection/turbo -> spfi pistons
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree about the overheat with or without. With pushes it into another route (the heater core) without, sends most to radiator and hardly anything to h core and its lines. I want it dispersed all over every square inch it can go to, it is common sense stronger cool, even if the same reading shows up on the guage. A true experiment would be to shut the car off after full temp, and check it just 20 min later- same guage same readings yet engine stays warmer longer without thermostat and guage verifies it is still warmer after same time shut off.I just did this not long ago. I swore it was running cooler without, and I was quite wrong, plus there was no heat at all-- that is NO indication of cool engine, most likely the opposite. I installed a "stant" replacement due to the slime stuck on old one (again the sealant additive - it is what clogged my rad.) The stant is quite small in comparison to oem, seems faster reacting, non- yoyo'd. I am sure the 2 core could handle the setup.. just second guessing everything before it is a waste of time in my mistakes. -

mpfi injection/turbo -> spfi pistons
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The driveline this came from is a 1988 GL-10 -- the final hypoid gear ratio is written as 3.475 for 1989, I would hope yours is correct (3.475 is odd to majority). Another note, 1988 was a year mpfi gl-10 wagons had 7.1:1 compression according to cars101.com. I am shrugging this off as a written error, as a tech book for this shows it at the common-for-all 7.7:1 mikeshoup: If the xt @ 3.7 hauls, I wonder what a tin-can sedan is gonna do being a bit of steel lighter... Swapping ecu stuff Q-- there is 3 more injectors , a different ecu, and knock sensor(?). How difficult is wiring, I am hoping many things overlap the same. -
mpfi injection/turbo -> spfi pistons
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey thanks-- I was sure it could be done with the expense of a bit more heat/strain. If the single core all metal radiator can handle most anything, the double core should be very good. If a few other factors come together in coming weeks, I will know. I would like to kill boost if possible instead of retarding timing -- even if it is next to nil. My spfi pings now randomly, and I aint budging anymore. I am not even interested in adding IC (may not even run turbo). You're xt must haul rump roast-- is it 2wd? the turbo gears (3.475)? -
I looked closely through tech manual for a 1989 sube. Upon finding a mpfi turbo driveline cheap, I thought of the swap of normal 7.7:1 turbo pistons onto the spfi engine's pistons of 9.5:1 (lower end/block). By swapping heads, intake,ECU wiring etc. I found subtle differences: the pistons for spfi==9.5:1 and a diameter .0005 inches different (smaller) than a mpfi 7.7:1 piston.(Could spfi pistons handle a pound or two of turbo?) the final drive hypoid gear for mpfi is 3.475, the 2wd swap would be 3.7 (2wd takes off faster-- possible welcome torque kill?) thoughts of a heavy duty radiator neither car has would be a great idea too (should have two core soon enough) Other than this, I don't have any other facts, as I would need to look at both blocks to find other stuff. Anybody done this? It really got me pondering a unique setup, as I am itching to take my old ea82 apart for bearings, or possibly another, and keep my old one running for now.It is so ridiculously possible, I am thinkin as if I had the stuff already

Thanks. Is stretching springs an option ? Or is there a means from another engine cross reference to get some new ones... I have overheated several times and don't trust original integrity-- even if they seem good.I have one cylinder with a leaky valve that goes away when warm (sounds like an exhaust leak if I didn't know any better).If you are certain, I'll just go with them. Are new head bolts a "must do" or just put bolts back in same spot? (that is what I did on a v8 I built if they weren't obviously bent).and lastly, lash adjusters -- do they last forever? If I am 1/4 of 1 quart down on oil, one lets me know...
-
My searches on web are ridiculous. I did this on a v8 with new seals springs and simply hand ground the valves to clean cheaply (and even upgraded to teflon valve seals). Is there such a kit for ea82?

That hack is awesome. It is welded right where I am certain wagons are the weakest/flexible. paint it/finish would be great car show candidate -
what weight tranny oil do you guys use? (ea81 4wd)
bgd73 replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
They make alot of noise at first-- the viscosity is greatly different than regular. My old dl was changed after 15 years, and it was quite loud for 2 months , and suddenly all was quiet. I thought/felt it would go to 1 million miles with the synthetic, noticable in hot weather once viscosity synchs(sinks) in. I should do this to my loyale, but its still young at 13. -
It may be a hack job(?). The brakes in rear are drums (I am fairly certain of it), and it had the pushbutton 4wd (I believe that was an option for the real 88 turbo). The bodies were horrible around here - all GL's and DL's.The paint gave no indication of any turbo - like trim, and decal on rear door or hatchback door.There was also no rails for roof rack up top - solid bendable roof (yikes- I could give a guess how it broke). From underneath it looked normal, nothing unusual leaking etc. That year had an unusually low compression for the mpfi turbo (7:1 -- the others I found were higher at 7.7:1, so it just may be worthwhile, not stressed all that much.)I'll give a call and see if I can at least here it run. The sale is very much indicating engine/driveline only, I'm sure the owner knows what mpfi turbo was to the loyale/gl/dl/generation and demanding the 500.As of now, I don't believe I can purchase, I found my car's twin instead.. if interested, it is on south main street, Brewer, maine.Will post how it runs, if I can find time.

I spotted an old rusty wagon looked like a Loyale- thought I'd go take a look. The sign in window said 88GL with "MPFI TURBO" - I'm thinkin " they made one of those?" It also said, "frame broke" (just like my old 87 DL I would imagine). I took a peak underneath and sure enough there was the exhaust pipe going across the front of oil pan. Would you pay 500 bucks "runs good" for the engine and ECU? It is unmodded as there is no intercooler in front or hood scoop. It sounds like something to go broke temporarily over . I have only seen one mpfi in my entire existence...

searching Loyale production facts

great site thanks -
I am curious to know how many loyales were built and where. I found this for another make and model, so , is it possible to be somewhere on the web?

OMG these car dealers are idiots
bgd73 replied to daeron's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
weirdos and thier car lots -- not even an impreza with the dents I spotted , and a couple of years newer woud ask that price -- I have seen the loyales given away for free with no dents (i have even done it)! -
SPFI idle quality issues
bgd73 replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I went through this to no avail really, except fuel additives that clean injection, and thoroughly cleaned top of spfi unit,and all the lines that were hardened. The fluctuating is a culprit-- if it is engine internals due to high mileage, make up for it elsewhere (egr for example). The intake is so small, 21 solid as a freakin rock would be normal with the carb/spfi whistling at an idle like a tea pot ready to throttle respond quickly (I had it once on this spfi -- and it faded away- there is quite a demand on the vacuum system as a whole). On the other side of air sucking is fuel to go with it -- a pin hole in fuel system can trick into a vacuum oddity (idle). A stubborn fuel damper (with no leaks) at low speeds can do it. That sensor at thermostat housing keeps idle way up unhooked/bad. Nothing EGR bothers it unhooked (it was my biggest helper). Hardened rubber vac lines (petrified) does not mean sealed forever- that was my old engines other hidden problem. It is quite a nuisance if it decides to shake around on a perfect miss -- and it isn't even firing/cylinder sometimes -

SPFI idle quality issues
bgd73 replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
keep it very very tight. An undetectable vacuum leak can even set it off. My own spfi had porous rubber lines, no leak detected. The screw on the top left of spfi is a good one to keep barely open as well, once you're confident it is all sealed.. I can't even emphasize how tight that has to get-- the rubber intake boot seems to be number one prob ,engine shakes it into a micro leaker over time. Other than that-- I wouldn't have any idea besides tune up stuff, clean fuel with stabilizer etc.My fix inadvertantly was replacing rubber lines with aluminum where I could, it wasn't even my goal to stop vac prob, but it sure did-- the idle smoothed.Scrapping egr also helped me too -
Saab wheels and sube == saabube?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This saab maneuvre can be done... (so far as I can tell now). The rear hubs drilled close to center ring, studs unmodified, but longer, and rim will sit on top of the center groove protruding from rear hub making it wider than the front in stance by 1/2 inch or so-- I may make spacer for it, but it doesn't seem necessary at this point. The front wheels have to be machined (drill bit) to get them to lock on to hub plate and drill that as well for saab pattern (the four nubs that seat oem wheel), and all fitting in the wells. Anyone relate to this? I still like it better than 6 lug hack, as strong center of hub/rotor will be utilized.I could even use the saab hub caps... If someone can prove me wrong, I would appreciate it before taking apart. -
Saab wheels and sube == saabube?
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just measured exactly... it is so close. The back end of the studs would half to be grinded to a "3/4 moon" , and side of stud would be just touching the center ring on hub and nubs on rotor,and drilling out saab wheel to 3.5 center all the way through wouldn't be a good idea. The hard part, time consuming, would be the .25+ inch groove for the 3.5+ inch center ring without going all the way through wheel. It would be very strong if acheivable, studs coming out of the toughest part of rotor/hub and going through wheel normally. I don't believe I can do it. I would hope someone out there could. They fit very well, and they are very light. Some of the cars they came off of had as many reputable miles as an old sube- and wheels needed nothing for thier whole life.Upon a call to a used saab/bmw dealer local,the guy I spoke to claimed he just shipped out 100 alloys like the 3 I gave him for free, just to get rid of them. Abundance and cost is low to get them, and even make mistakes to drill without worry due to being more of them available.The saabs that hold them are fading away, leaving a lifetime alloy wheel behind (at least 4 of them). -
What to do with that donor sube...
bgd73 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That trailer is quite tough looking.. never seen one. does it have hidden gatlin guns and rocket launcher, a pop-up radar, enough food for the big nuke.. no doubt four wheel drive! (j/k) If I had time, I would surely do something with the back half of a sube. Put a floor in way down low,after gutting some heavy steel and keep appearance of the back end of the car, make it real lightweight. I have a trailer sitting in my yard (not mine) from the back half of a 40's pickup, with an axle bolted to a wooden frame, bubbly fenders doin alot of work... anything is possible. The 85 year old owner just put creosold on the wooden bed floor treating it like his old days-- it is that old. An old sube trailered would go 50 sittin in the yard untouched. -

After giving away the super light alloy saab wheels I just purchased.. I completely forgot about drilling the hub/rotor... is 114mm acheivable? or hub/rotor too small? again a close call (will check tomorrow). The offset is absolutely perfect -within 1/8th inch of riding good in the wells on tires just about hangin over the saab wheel -- even on my 2wd, and room to make a better fit with smaller tire. I'm gonna poop a brick if they can fit to drilled hubs. I can easily do that at home.Maybe I can go tell the guy I gave them to: "I changed my mind, can I have them back?" -

it is a fwd car, that is why I thought of it.. I also saw tiny pop-up campers even motorcycles can haul. this back half would be interesting to see unfold-- larger than some existing now. Hollow out underneath where gas tank is for more usable space, just keep shell of it and strut towers, rear axle mounts, etc. of course, keep the tailpipe hooked up:) -

In a realistic daydream, as your casual investor- to this day I would step and make 100,000 15x5.5 inch 4lug @140mm with exactly a 1" offset, and walk away. Then on to international sales to sell 1,000,000 more of them to trailer companies as heavy duty, then take my percentage of 400million dollars and buy a 93 loyale wagon with 360,000 miles on its original engine to take a cross country journey on my new wheels that could... Somebody slap me I'm losin it.... -

I haven't called. I did find a 130mm pattern for porsche, vw 1971-82 from that page tho. Upon quick search for hackable wheels by 5mm each hole. I found this very good candidate- The offset from here looks way too far out (1 inch or so seems to be limit for the old sube) anyone hacked a porsche wheel? this one is 15x5.5 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Volkswagen-Porsche-914-8-Spoke-Mag-Wheels-4-lug_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34209QQihZ011QQitemZ320011588923QQrdZ1
