I dunno if it's worth the effort, but you might contact SOA. A regional rep might be able to do some kind of 'goodwill' compensation. 1/2 the cost ot pay for the labor if you pay for parts, etc. Dealerships 'generally' have no incentive or authority to do that kind of thing. Just seems like an oddly rapid failure of what is generally a robust part of a car - unless there's evidence of tampering/damage...?

next morning, maybe a helper could 'pace' the car to determine if the noise is central (maybe diff mounts?) or on one side (brake or suspension?) do you set the parking brake? many parts could be suspect on a 21 year old car. -
hope they get it fixed-up. "Infant Mortality" is a real effect with manufactured items and often, after the first glitches are taken care of, reliability settles down. if you think the issues are extreme, check into your State's Lemon Laws in case you need to make a claim. Subaru may just be in a hurry, I read they were down to 6 days of inventory.

Grim, there will be quite a bit of suspension stuff available for the car. You might check out www.nasioc.com a tune may help a little, but the turbo cars can benefit most from tuning. at www.subaruoutback.com, there's a user west_minist that has tuned several folks' cars. he has a website, http://xtremeracingtuning.com/ if you want to mod for offroad, plenty of folks here could help with that. -
OK, most of the symptoms you mentioned match a well known issue with that generation. There can be a 'flare' when accelerating at highway (actually, fairly high speeds in my experience - 75+) speeds. as a test, try a battery disconnect reset (write down your radio presets, disconnect the battery overnight, or, disconnect, step on the brake pedal, wait 10-15 minutes w'ever, reconnect. Do this just before a road trip, or other highway usage. If it helps the issue, it is typical for that generation. If not, you may have some other problem. Years ago, I posted about this with my 03. It was already a known problem. The TC will unload, then there's a downshift flare before the lower gear engages, then BAM, it can be terrifying. Can't be good for the drivetrain either. After I learned about it, always did the reset before road trip. I dunno how often , or if ever, you will need to do it if you are always driving at extreme highway speeds. you may of course have a different problem.

2-3 ideas Automatic? you have a FWD fuse selection slot under the hood.Use that with mismatched tires. check ebay, craigslist, etc. for a used tire the same model as your other 3 and near them in wear. have a new tire shaved down to the average of the wear of the other 3 If you DO NOT have a viscous rear diff, buy 2 tires but run them on opposite corners of the car.

yeah, really doesn't seem like a sensor/ECU issue, seems like something more 'physical'. as said, triple check cam/crank timing. Locate the 'tooth count' for that engine. Bring the crank/cam marks to their 'belt install' positions and count the teeth between everything. Something may be a tooth off. Wonder if a 'dropped' valve guide could come-and-go??? maybe some odd vacuum leak comes-and-goes??? - maybe try some vacuum gauge readings - may have to rig a way to do that while revving/driving?

not in your area, but welcome. These guys as well as some folks over at www.subaruoutback.org have helped me quite a bit. My '03 Outback has been passed-along to a family member but is still running every day. -
