anyone run without Tbelt covers? ea82T
so I am sitting right next to my motor on the stand right now, and I am trying to assemble it now, but the rear belt covers are shot (melted around the bolt holes and also cracked in places... so i cant quite re-use them, and nobody replyed to my "WTB belt covers" post :-\ so I am wondering if anyone here has had bad or good luck with running their ea82 without belt covers at all? (I am gonna go with all or none here!) this is going to be on my XT, so I will have to make some sort of guard, or buy new belt covers soon.... but for getting it running.. it shouldnt be too bad right?

Is there a way to change gearing?I'm turning 4,000rpms @ 80mph...
you shouldnt need to change the gearing.... subaru motors are designed to run at high rpms for long periods of time... in fact, i have noticed that the ones that are used in that aspect, last longer and run better- so I would just get used to it... (think of it like a sport bike! they run about 8000rpms for a crusing rpm ) cause your motor will run good at that rpm (besides, if you get to a hill, you will need it to be in the powerband anywyas to climb it)

Forrester XT Oil
Ratty2Austin replied to geckolizard's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHi, I work in the oil change dept. at Carter Subaru, and I have actually heard this complaint before from a few people (loosing oil up to a Qt. between oil changes) Subaru claims that due to the motor design, tolerances allow for up to 1qt loss of oil between oil changes (every 3k), which is supposed to be "normal". in my own opinion, I would just keep using the oil as normal (the suggested 5w30 syntec or whichever you prefer) and check the level on occation and top off as needed.

I will be in oregon from sun night to wed afternoon...
I will be in the Euegene area between sunday night (late) and wednesday afternoon, and I will also be looking for a way to get back home, because I am leaving behind the vehicle I am driving there.... (selling it) I already have greyhound bus as a plan.. but it would be nice if I could hitch a ride back to seattle and haul my tranny back with me :-D I will pay for gas if someone wants to come on a road trip and has passenger space for 2 people and a tranny! (assuming your not driving something that sucks 12mpg... ) otherwise.. maybe I could meet up with you while I am there- just leave posts in this thread!

Who's Who Two (Roll call for lifted rigs)
well, most of you have seen my wagon... and the ones before it (pics are spread out in my album...) the current status is in limbo.. my wagon sits in the customization shop engineless at this time.. it is undergoing cosmetic upgrades, as well as some armor and major drivetrain/power system upgrades... some people know whats gonna happen, to the rest of you it will be a suprise! otherwise, it has a 2/3" PK lift, and 27" BF goodrich A/T tires on 14" steel pugs.... the rest is to be disclosed later Hatch patrol member... dont remember when joined, but back in 99/00 i learned of the board when I met Ezap, and started offroading with him when I bought my first lifted soob (the white 81DL hatch from J-Zigi) I dont know if I am considered a Oregon offroad member, but I have wheeled a couple times with Mudrat, Hondasucks and Caboobaroo.... so maybe? also this summer, planning to make the west coast round trip down the the border and back (or at least a pass thru San Diego and all of Cali and the coast)

WRX is trouble. Stay away.
Ratty2Austin replied to teppichkopf's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXafter driving a WRX, go drive a forrester XT with a 5spd, then an STi, ... after that, you wont want a stock WRX anymore! personally, I would buy the Forrester XT over the STi! (well, its really a toss up there, but the XT is more comfortable, for almost the same performance) if you wonder how I know about these? well.... it has to do with my job! I will let you guys know how the new turbo legacys are when they unload them from the truck (estimated next month for us, and then i will take one for a spin)

"spy" pics of new 05 outbacks! and i got to drive it!

best way to paint a car on the cheap?
I spent less than 40 bucks on krylon paint and supplys... about 4 cans per color... (primer layer, than color) and 2 cans grey.... I am gonna re-coat it for more shine.... but it turned out great, and is fairly scratch resist... takes only a few hours- take a look http://usmb.net/gallery/album218

Attn:SubieGal or someone who knows her
yeah, i guess it would make more sence if you knew what one of Jamie's jobs at carter is... she sells stuff online.. so her job is emailing and posting replys to people... people that buy stuff online from carter... so she is already extra-busy on NASIOC and such, selling stuff for carter, and when she trys to put her own personal time in, its like being at work... and you know how that gets- but like i said, I will see if I can talk to her. thanks for understanding

WaterWagon is back! and better than before!
My wagon has its new tires! and a new carb.. I replaced the weber with the origional Hitachi... it runs much smoother now, and idles correctly  woohoo.... although, not as much oomph (although not soo noticable) here is a pic of my new tires- http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo36/DSCN2985 my weber is for sale, with the manifold and modified throttle cable and mounts.. (ready to bolt on to a ea81!) and I will have the issues repaired with it before selling too.. (i just need to replace the needle and seat, and finish cleaning it out)
-
Attn:SubieGal or someone who knows her
Hey... I do work directly (in the same building) as Jamie, and she does want the car, and as far as we have discussed, not pulling your chain. she is a very busy person... on a daily basis, she is always very stressed out, so please be patient, she is starting her race season, ( I helped her dismount the skid plate on the WRX and changed the oil with her just the other day) I did also talk to her about the 73, and she is ready to get it, other than time.... it looks like I will probably be accompanying her or whoever comes out that way to pick up the car, assuming it is a day that I have off- to help out with finding the place, and just another visit to Moxee when I see her at work, I will find out if she has seen this post yet...

Clutch
I am guessing you are talking about where the clutch cable mounts to the pedal cluster? howabout carls brat? 84 and 83 should be mostly the same?

trouble with weber DGEV 32/36
I cant get my car to idle at all... there are no vacume leaks... checked that.. it revs up ok, but when it is supposed to go to idle, or when it drops down to the low (under 2k) rpms, it runs real chunky, and studders.... I looked down the primary barrel, and where the fuel is sprayed out (the jet outlet?) it is a wet dribble, not a mist like it should be- I cleaned out the whole carb (took out all the jets and cleaned the whole thing in chem dip) and put it all together, and it did the same thing...!!!! could something be broken, or worn out?? i am having nothing but trouble with this carb.. and i am tempted to go back to hitachi! (never had this much trouble!) any ideas or suggestions? my wagon is dead untill this is solved!!

Camping trip/Road trip results! pictures!
well we made it home, after a wild fun crazy adventure around washington state (and a little bit in oregon too!) day 1, saturday... we started out at my work, at 6pm.... went to my house to pick up people, and then headed out... stopped at Zekes drive in on highway 2, to meet up with Matt and Leanne... then we proceeded up and over Stevens pass, and stopped for gas and snacks in leavenworth (at like 11pm) after not too much longer, we arrived at the "campsite" and set up...there were 2 tents, and one wagon sleeper... its amazing how one front passenger seat can hold people sleeping in it! next morning, day 2, sunday. waking up to nice quiet morning sun... and a lot of moisture in the car (it was raining inside!) but it was still nice compared to a wet tent... got everyone up finally... thanks to Erik bringing the wonderous propane grill! and spam and eggs!!!! I dropped the spam when it slid out of the can, but nothing a little water cant fix! we ate breakfast, and then played around the camp.. climbed up the hill and looked in an old mine. we then packed up, and drove up Old Blewett Pass Highway, to find more rocks and hills to climb, and we also came up to a snow bank on the road, where a RAV4 was stuck.... we pulled him out with waterwagon, and then told him how to do the "speed thru" style of offroading... so he gunned it, and made it thru! we kept going, but decided to go back to Leavenworth, and tour the town. we had fun, ate some chocolate, cheese and pepperoni from misc tourist stores, and then headed out on our way back up Blewett Pass, (highway 97) Matt's hatch decided to blow out a rubber plug (the ones that PAP put into the oil pan when they stab it and drain the oil) and he lost all of his oil in 10 secs...!!!! the only option was to replace the pan, and so we contacted Jerry in Seleah, and he was able to get a pan, but he couldnt bring it to us... we ended up using waterwagon to rope tow the hatch about 60 miles up 2 more passes all the way to Seleah, where matt could fix it. finally fixed at about 9pm, and we continued on our way- we got to the Oregon border, and went into Biggs.... we had ... dinner?... at a 24hr Mcdonalds! then we drove down I-84 a little farther, and found a picknick/rest stop area... we pulled in and made a triangle out of the cars, and 3 of us camped right on the pavement (sleeping bags only) and the rest were in the cars... day3.. monday morning awakening at 6:15... a train blows by about 20 feet from where we were sleeping!!! but we got a good morning start. we drove up to Mary Hill, where the replica Stonehenge is, and had breakfast there (in the parking lot) we played around a little bit, then headed out back on the highway 14 west... we stopped at a place thats off the side of the road, where there is a lot of rock climbibg area, and we hiked around there for quite a while... lots of good view points, and nice climbing areas! once "finished" there, (we were starting to get dehydrated from the heat and the running around) we pushed on.. I thought it would be fun and more scenic if we took a different path than the major highways, so I looked at the map and saw a road system that went between Mt Adams, and Mt St. Helens, and we started up that way... the high altitude climb began... we kept getting higher and higher, then realised that there was more and more snow on the roadways (yes, it was still about 80 degrees though!) we got to a spot where the snow was too deep to even get the lifted subarus thru (it was more like compact ice, which we couldnt push out of the way) from there we turned around. headed back to the main highway along the Coumbia, then up I-5 where it became a subaru trio race... though they couldnt really go over the speed limit much, it was still a fun race.... the pictures are all in my album, http://usmb.net/gallery/album189 all in all, it was a fun time, we will have to do this again with a bigger croud (and maybe with spare parts?)

My 1980 outback! (wagon makeover)
i have done it! Muhhahahahha!!! it is... well, not DONE, but done enough to justify spending a lil more time to finish and polish and clear coat it later... but for 35 bucks worth of paint... it worked out well! I present the magic of krylon! http://usmb.net/gallery/album218 (thanks Matt and James for helping the speedy one day job) I will add more explanation later.. these are the pics!

Has anyone been wanting to see inside one of these?
OhoOHO!HH!!!!! I have a big request!!!! can you PLEASE find out if the stub shafts on the diff, between the full time tranny (should be 25 spline, "turbo") and the N/A (23 spline, the one in the picture) are interchangable!??? (mission= find out if you can make a FT4wd D/R tranny fit ea81 axles, aka 23 spline output shafts) that would be THE most helpful thing that dissasembeling those two trannys can bring us! thanks a bunch ahead of time
