September 25, 200916 yr Do i remember right that it was 84? I got an 83 so its got solid rotors that are warped to hell. Going to ebay and getting a set of vented along with new calipers from rock auto.
September 25, 200916 yr i am remembering a difference in the non-vented vs. vented rotors.i am thinking the non-vented are a tad thicker, which in turn means there will be play if you put a vented rotor in. i this happen to me on one of the brats.cheers, brian
September 25, 200916 yr Author I think it was 83 and it had to be a AT to have vented rotors. That would mean mine should have vented rotors since its an 83 and used to be an Auto. Now im confused lol

September 25, 200916 yr To be safe, you can probably get all the parts you need from napa, just order them for a 1986 Brat. I think you need calipers & rotors to make it work right, backing plate should fit still... And you come out with all brand new stuff. Turn in your old crap as cores, they wont know the diff.
September 25, 200916 yr Sometime in '82 I thought.... because I had trouble getting the right parts for my '82 GL wagon, and they claimed that it was because they switched rotors in the middle of the year (or they were just making excuses). Z
September 26, 200916 yr It was a mid-year change in '83. My '83 hatch has them as well (4 speed D/R). They did a mid year update in '83 and changed several things like the vented disc's and the clutch cable's, etc. GD
September 26, 200916 yr I dont have a build date but, My 83 Brat has vented.. I ordered new rotors once and got non vented and the brakes didn't work right.. It took me over a month to figure it out, and it was my daily driver. Mike
September 26, 200916 yr Author Did you convert it? Yea i swapped it about 3 years ago. I hated the 3at with a passion.

September 27, 200916 yr i knew it was one way or the other!:lol:but, like mykey said, it does not work to mix and match.at all.cheers, brian Backwards The vented rotor is thicker, and uses a larger caliper
September 27, 200916 yr No,, it don't work so well to mix solid-vented brake parts. Whoever the former owner of my '86 BRAT was, (before 86subaru bought it), swapped in an older solid-lifter motor. No problem there. But,,,,, they also swapped a solid rotor onto the PS keeping the vented caliper in place.. Worked ok, until the brake pads wore down. Then it decided to chuck the outer pad out of the bracket when I hit the brakes. Luckily, I was just a few hundred yards from the driveway when that happened. 4 year old Grandson and I made home with no issues. I promtly put the correct parts back on....
September 27, 200916 yr Worked ok, until the brake pads wore down. Then it decided to chuck the outer pad out of the bracket when I hit the brakes. Yeah, that is a flaw in the Design of the vented caliper and pads. I had the same thing happen on 2 different 84 EA81s, both still with original vented rotors.. The bracket is just a bad design, it allows the pad to slip out when it gets to thin and worn. MAking sure you have ALL the little sheet metal clips and spacers in the brackets helps alot. They are cheap.....it is just getting the counter guy at the dealership to look at the old parts books.....

Not sure i understand this. I was never intending on mixing and matching parts. I was going to get vented disk brake calipers as well as vented rotors so that i have the whole vented package. I just needed the years that i could ask for to get the correct parts.
September 27, 200916 yr Find you some super fancy cross drilled & vented rotors Thats like an extra 30hp combined!!
September 27, 200916 yr Author Find you some super fancy cross drilled & vented rotors Thats like an extra 30hp combined!! Lol...thought about it and i would like to but money is not there and i need good brakes. My brakes are terrible so i gotta do it now and just do stock replacement parts.
September 28, 200916 yr http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1267725,parttype,1704 Those 1st 2 are what I bought for mine, doesn't matter that they say for A/T, they fit. Vented rotors are $22.XX or $12.XX on close-out. My previous post wasn't directed at you. I was merely commenting on the mix-n-match that was brought up. It don't work to well....
October 4, 200916 yr Author I just now stumbled on those today. Anyone else have any experience with them...because my wallet is guiding me towards the 12 dollar rotors and the 47 dollar calipers. Should i be wary of them or are they good stuff?
October 5, 200916 yr Should be fine - this is an EA81 after all - and a 2WD one at that. Light car, 75 HP..... not exactly a performance machine. Any of the availible offerings should do you just fine unless you drag on the brakes all the time or drive like grandma - if you compression brake like you should, rarely use them on the freeway/highway like you should - they will outlast the car. GD
October 5, 200916 yr Author 75 HP..... not exactly a performance machine. GD Not yet...... Still working on that one lol...or at least making it zippier. Thanks for the advice. Im ordering them tomorrow. Im tired of these warped rotors.
