February 22, 200422 yr Yeah, its not working anymore... I can shift from 2nd to 3rd relativly easy, but if im downshifting from 4th to 3rd, sometimes it wont grab and the tranny will slip out of gear, which usually ends up grinding until i can grab the shifter and slam it back into 3rd again. Is this pre-mature tranny meltdown? The car is a slug in 4th gear, been thinking of doing something about it. Not sure if I wanna do the whole 5spd deal, but I would like to get 3rd gear back. -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr Author Oh yeah, and for those that dont know... its on the '84 Lifted Wagon, EA81 4spd Dual Range 4WD. -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr Brian, how much clearance do you have between the shifter and the radio? in my Dad's wagon, if you shift lightly into 3rd, it'll instantly pop back out, but if you shift sold and hold it in third until your foot is totally off the pedal, it stays.... he's put 40k on it that way so far.....
February 22, 200422 yr what i had to do when that started to happen with mine is shift from 4th down to 2nd then back up to 3rd that and around that i couldn't shift into 1st with out coming to a complete stop which sucked
February 22, 200422 yr Author Thats the problem Mick, i dont have any room at all between 3rd and my radio. Since the radio isnt stock, it sticks out more. I could shift hard into 3rd anytime I'd like, and ensure its stays in gear, but i'd have to buy a box of bandaids for my knuckles. -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr I see 2 possibilties. First, its not making it all the way into gear beacause of the radio. Fix : bend the shifter a little to provide more clearance. Second.. synchros in 3rd are going kaput.. Fix: D/R 5 speed.
February 22, 200422 yr You could fix the slop in the shifter and at the same time incorporate the short shifter fabrication I sent you three months ago for the USRM
February 22, 200422 yr Author Yeah, something I need to do. The shifter doesnt need to be any shorter. With the 3" lift, the shifter is already 3" shorter. -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr Sorry for not being specific. The fabrication I sent you, does not "shorten the shifter" It shortens the throw of the shifter. i.e. how far the shifter moves between shifts Which in this case, may help BTW My Brat had the same problem
February 22, 200422 yr Author Yes, shorter throw would be alot better. Guess i better dig through the old email and find that -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr Author maybe, we'll just have to wait and see Tranny givin you trouble too? -Brian
February 22, 200422 yr I agree with the shorter stick shift. I was looking at it on my EA82 and I think one could cut 3 inches off the stick and then rethread the stick
February 22, 200422 yr the EA81 4spd Transmission is know for having a bad 3-4 gear shift fork. But yours just might be the snychros. Either way, sounds like might be time for a conversion. Richie
February 22, 200422 yr Way back when my 83 wagon did that too. I started just not using 3rd, sucked on hills, though. If you need a D/R 4 speed, let me know. I may be able to bring one out west for you in a few weeks. Chris
February 23, 200422 yr I need to do mine, too. I want to put the earlier one I have in there, with the lower 3rd/4th let me know if we could get together and do these. I'd rather find a 5speed, but I do have this trans sitting here. d
