horribly wobbly steering wheel

Featured Replies

not like alot of play in it, but once i get over 50 mph the front end goes crazy. the steering wheel goes wobbles back and forth about 1 inch very fast. it seems to do it more when i let off the gas, than when floored. i changed bearings, and ball joints on the suspect side, and it didnt do much if anything.

it has to be the front end because its all in the steering wheel right?

do these symtoms sound like cv, doj, reely bad alignment, tie rod ends? everytihng? i gotta fix it before the iowa meet.

It sounds like you have a bent or unballanced wheel.

Exact same problem on mine, Dealer says its the axle. Got a new one in the mail last week. Yet to replace it though. Too busy.

you could do a quick alignmenct check, with the tires straight measure from one side to the other on the front and the back, it'll help to have someone else hold the other side of the tape measure. if these arn't within about an 1/8 of an inch your toe is off, that would certainly cause a heck of a wabble. to make measuring easier, use a tread block as a guide rather than the sidewall.

Try rotating your front wheels with the rears. See if the sympton changes. My XT6 has good alignment, axles fairly good. XT6 needs wheels rotated bout 6-12 month intervals.

WELL, if its axles, i got 4 good ones off an ea82. have yet to measure my alignment. i wiggled the axles and the both seem fine. guess i'll just have rebuild both with the good ones i got. frankenstein time, i guess.

When was the last time the wheels were balanced, and how old are they? If this isnt the issue, than the axle has to be the problem. It happened on my hatch, even after rotating the tires, replacing the lower ball joint, I finally replaced the axle and WaLa!, no more wobble. Btw, the axle "felt" fine.

well, im gonna rebuild my ea81 axles with my ea82s. im guessing its the inner joint, since the outer one usualy clicks? and i've only changed the outer cv joint between ea81s and 82s, the inner swaps too right?

My Brat has a bulge in one of the tires and it has a shakey/wiggley steering wheel. Might check your tires.

ug... it was a missing castle nut washer, not the conical one, but the flat one. rolls nice now.

thanks alot everybody

I had that problem with my old 83 dl. I got the wheels balanced and that helped ALOT. Have you been in any mud lately? If you have, check to see if you have any big clumps of mud stuck to your wheels. Also an alignment job wouldn't hurt.
