May 29, 20178 yr Hey, Can anybody tell me what type of marker / manufacture that will stay on and show up on a timing belt / and gears? I want to put marks on the gears, and rotation direction on the belt. Thanks
May 29, 20178 yr Wite-Out works well also. Belt direction doesn't matter, just the tooth count marks. O.
May 29, 20178 yr It's not necessary to mark anything. It's a waste of time and more confusing than helpful IMO. It's add a third set of things to think about that aren't at all necessary or meaningful. Makes no sense logically. I'd suggest being confident you can line up the gear marks properly and ignore everything else.
May 29, 20178 yr There is no need for marks. They already exist on the sprockets. You can use chalk to brighten them if you need. Put all marks at 12 o clock. That is all. GD
May 30, 20178 yr I enjoy the added convenience of the paint marks already provided on new belts. It's a nice double check, especially if you have one of those belt cover notches that doesn't quite line up. As long as you took care of everything that needed to be done when you replaced the belt, there's no need to go back in there for anything. I believe those marks last for at least 20k miles, so if something unexpected happens that requires removal again, and the marks are worn off, I'd just put on a new one anyway.
May 30, 20178 yr best double check is tooth count before starting the engine. I did it after I pulled the pin on the tensioner and rotated the crank 720* to line the pulley marks up again. the belt marks, if present, wont line up again for 243 rotations or w'ever.
September 14, 20178 yr I use a paint pen to mark the old belt at each cam and the crank. Just another way of making sure the new belt has the marks in the correct places. I also count the teeth but that is just me being anal.
September 15, 20178 yr I use a paint pen to mark the old belt at each cam and the crank. Just another way of making sure the new belt has the marks in the correct places. I also count the teeth but that is just me being anal. Agree, I do the same, A good check to be sure, before taking old belt off. Then compare the marks are at similar positions on both old and new belts including lining up the teeth (belts side by side) .
September 16, 20178 yr I use these Sharpie Paint pens, but that is because I am a slow learning Newb. I marked the belt etc. to feel comfortable. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017A1BIUM/ref=sxts_bia_sr_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3182441022&pd_rd_wg=nG42e&pf_rd_r=1ZXXTW8VNX96XE0AM50V&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B017A1BIUM&pd_rd_w=dWpIl&pf_rd_i=sharpie+paint+pen&pd_rd_r=81JARKSZKJKY7Z2HWVB1&ie=UTF8&qid=1505515766&sr=1
