I wonder how many of us keep something on the shelf for "just in case," and it winds up never getting used and thrown in the scrap bin by our kids when we die. 

I guess I'll have to put something in writing for the entire contents of my "parts shed" to be given to the Subi community somehow.......

I've got three EA81T parts engines to rob for oil pumps if/when I need them.  Although the turbo may have had a greater impact on their lives vs. a carb'd EA81 oil pump.

I too have a few parts motors and wrecks for bits and pieces - my now retired Brumby (from public roads) has 435000 kms on the original engine (I did replace the head gaskets once but I did not really need to as it was a welch plug in one of the heads leaking) the old girl has done an incredible amount of work on only basic maintenance and still starts instantly (although the oil pressure light takes a second or two to go out) uses a bit of oil and fouls up number three plug - gets fed our other cars second hand oil and is a bit tappity (cant be bothered adjusting them) - I am sure I will be using it for many years to come as my motorized wheelbarrow. The only other motor I know of to be as reliable is the Mercedes 280 (twin cam) in my now dead W126 (wasn't the motor - that still ran)  --- 380,000 MILES.

Not really sure now - but - I didn't mean it to sound bad or like any kind of attack.  I tend to think of these things on a component level - oil leaking, replace the seal.  Also, with the parts getting scarcer, anyone else reading might have better luck finding seals.  I have spare pumps, so I tend to think of reseal and swap.  I have not seen any with bad wear or damage that would make replacement necessary.  I have not seen nearly as many as GD however.

 

I found a Melling M-100 oil pump. Some websites say it will fit the EA81 1.8 but others only say it will fit the 1.4 and 1.6. Any thoughts?

That looks like an EA71 (1600) pump to me.

That's an EA71 pump. Won't fit. Those seem to be more common. Unlike the 71, Melling didn't make a pump for the 81 that I've seen. 

Engine Rebuilders Supply (Troutdale, OR) has used ones in stock...  I've got one on the way right now.  Tried doing a seal replacement and the aluminum plate between the block and the pump was cracked in half   No scoring on the pump rotors though!

I found someone selling a oil pump for a 1.6 and 1.8 OHV. Is a 1984 brat EA81 engine a OHV or a overhead cam engine? How can I tell what my car is just to make sure that’s the engine that’s in the car now?

 

EA81 are OHV.  gear driven cam with push rods.

It looks a bit odd, but I never had an EA81.  It doesn't look like earlier or later ones though.  The 2 steps look funny to me.  The earlier pumps and the ea82 pumps have one round part past the flange, and a short shaft sticking out.

I just purchased the pump. I’ll have to wait and see if it matches up to the pump I have on the car now. If it is the wrong one how will I know? Will it fit and bolt on the engine block either way?

Yes that is the correct pump for the EA81. Congratulations on finding one.

Excellent news! I needed to make a quick decision buying it and took a gamble. I know they are hard to find. Glad I took a leap of faith! Thank you to everyone here, couldn’t do it without you!

My Brumby has 305,000km and I don't think it's had a new oil pump yet.

 

Any chance you know where to find another?   The ebay listing I found refunded me due to an inventory error and ERS sent me an EA71 oil pump...

it will be a case of randomly looking or do you have gumtree in the US yet ? It has a wanted to buy section and worked for me chasing something, though the want ad for an attractive, tall, brunette independently wealthy female with a BMI of 25 has not come to fruition

I’ve tried to contact a couple of folks via gumtree. No response. Found two brand new ones via car.gr in Greece, no response. I got a response from a guy with a used one in Greece telling me it’s too expensive to ship.  I wish he’d let me decide how I’ll spend my money! I work at a machine shop, so I’m trying to get one of our proto guys to machine one...
