February 18, 200521 yr Hello all, I'm back after a long time (OK, it's only 2 months ). Now we are just doing the bodywork, and when it's finished, I want to install a new (well, at least for me) steering wheel. The original is worn down very well, that's why I want to change. I don't have any ideas what kind of wheel I want yet, what looks cool in the blue EA-82 interior (the dashboard is black, but everything else is blue), and what is great to grip. I'm interested in other Subaru wheels also, I don't want to buy aftermarket wheel if not necessary. So please post your pics about your custom steering wheels! Thanks, Alf
February 18, 200521 yr Here is a pic of my Momo Corse. Think it's on the wrong side for you guys though
February 18, 200521 yr Here is a pic of my Momo Corse. Think it's on the wrong side for you guys though you always let your passenger drive??
February 18, 200521 yr you always let your passenger drive?? beat me to it. the real question is how do you get an adaptor for the wheel?
February 18, 200521 yr Author the real question is how do you get an adaptor for the wheel? It's easy for me at least, I have some friends in here, and their daily job is milling and turning (lathing). I only have to get some raw material and they will do the adaptor in 2 hours for 5 beers.
February 18, 200521 yr ARG! I need to get some new interior shots of my RX. I got a custom steering wheel and a B&M shift handle on the shifter since I finished putting the manual tranny in. I'll post some pics when I get a couple later today I hope:D
February 18, 200521 yr beat me to it. the real question is how do you get an adaptor for the wheel? You make one?
February 18, 200521 yr You make one? Use an old EA82 steering wheel and cut the hub out and turn it down on the lathe so its round and then line up the steering wheel and measure where you want to drill the holes for it to bolt to, tap the holes and BLAM, an adapter:D
February 18, 200521 yr How hard would it be to get the horn or work after swapping out the steering wheel?
February 18, 200521 yr My setup is a Momo adapter for old subes and a Momo wheel (Its even from 84, so its period correct! ).
February 18, 200521 yr How hard would it be to get the horn or work after swapping out the steering wheel? the MOMO adapter for the gen1/gen2 soobs (7302) has a connector that the horn wire plugs into (provided the steering wheel you are putting on has a horn.....)
February 18, 200521 yr This is a Grant wheel on my 86 Hatch. I didnt put it on, so I dont know much about it.
February 19, 200521 yr Here's a pic of the steering wheel and my new B&M T-handle shift knob. Ther interior is kinda torn apart since I have been swapping the instrument clusters but hey, you get the idea:D
February 21, 200521 yr Author Thanks for the pics to everyone! I think I'll go with the Momos or the Grants.
February 21, 200521 yr the MOMO adapter for the gen1/gen2 soobs (7302) has a connector that the horn wire plugs into (provided the steering wheel you are putting on has a horn.....) That's awesome! And this adapter will work with any momo wheel, right? Only thing is, I would feel a little guilty taking out the stock steering wheel from an XT, the steering wheel gives it so much character...
February 21, 200521 yr By the way, an XT would qualify as "Gen 2" right? I hope the adapter would fit....
February 21, 200521 yr nope the XT is a gen 3 car. Gen 1's are the 1400cc, 1600cc round headlight cars MINUS the STD which was a gen 2 car '80-'89 EA81 and fatcase EA71s. Gen 3 is the EA82 cars...
February 22, 200521 yr Hmm... so maybe a steering wheel adapter for an Impreza will fit the XT? Or would the early Impreza's be "Gen 4"?
February 22, 200521 yr Hmm... so maybe a steering wheel adapter for an Impreza will fit the XT? Or would the early Impreza's be "Gen 4"? Imprezas are EJ body styles and would be considered gen 4's I guess.
February 23, 200521 yr I am posting this for future searches, the Legacy or Impreza steering wheel adapter will fit the EA82 cars, this includes the XT series! This was just covered in another recent thread. thats something that would have been helpful a while back, thanks for posting that shadow. now i just gotta hit up advanced and get an adapter. that and i need to change the color of the wheel i got sitting in the car.
