Gen-1 Population?

Featured Replies

Ok, taking into account only registered/operable Gen-1s, How many do you all think are still out there? (like still on the road)

Nationwide?

Worldwide? (I'm sure rust ate them up in Europe too, but what about Oz? Are there still a bunch of 'em running around The Outback?)

I'm guessing 2000-3000 left. (On the road, Worldwide.) Figuring their attrition rate more due to their propensity for cancer than to mechanical defect.

Of those still Alive, how many are in "original" condition? Ie: no parts missing, no rust, dents, blemishes, rips/tears, cracks or leaks? (restored or survivors)

I know of two on the road in bend oregon and three sitting.

Guy down the street from me has two coupes, a brat and a wagon, all 76-79.

I know this one guy who I always see in Newcastle who has a cherry brat! Oh wait, it Wagonpowaa!

I have a Brat, a wagon, there's a wagon here in town, a Brat as well, a Brat down the street from my parents in Oregon... I can continue if you like but when you own one, you see them everywhere;)

One 1978 4WD wagon register with "Early American" (gag, choke, cough!!)plates on it.

One 1973 GL Coupe, should be road ready by the end of summer.Might be out and about this weekend.:brow:

Hopefully,I'll be getting my '75 2WD wagon back from WagonsOnly, but not sure yet.

3 here, not exactly cherry but in good condition

seen a few others around, if i can ever find my damn camera i'll get some pics

-mike

I know of just one brat here in Tenn.... an early 80's model... and an 82 DL 2 door in good coindition and nearly 300,000 miles.

My Brat's the only one within miles of here... none even in salvage yards. I do see a few wagons... it's kinda funny, in traffic I usually smell them and then look around to find them :)

well mine isn't all in original condition but I saw a 76 over on Trask River Road over near Tillamook, OR this last weekend during Oregon Trail Rally and it was in decent shape but had some cancer but in original shape with one rip in the drivers side seat and it was for sale but a lil steep for me at $1000 FIRM  and I forgot to take pics DOH! :banghead:

My 78 project Brat is the only Brat that I know of around. Oh wait there is one mint gen 2 Brat in town, 86 or 87. Besides that there is nothing. Trust me I have looked evrywhere. I drive around looking for parts cars and I never see any gen 1 stuff. My local junk yard has one gen 1 Brat, 78. That is where I have found some of my parts at. Maybe one day I will get around to picking up the 3 gen 1 Brats I found about 45 miles from my house.

hey Subieguy what are you looking for right at the moment? cause when I go back onto graveyard a couple friends and I will be heading out to the Subie graveyard that has 2 gen 1 brats that we could see what they have for you

Right now a good right fender, the lower front valance and a good left tail light. There is more but that would be a good start. Maybe a good rear bumper too.

In israel subaru are selling their cars since the late 60's.

Gen 1 brats were sold here alot and you can see plenty of them on the roads(mostly 2wd,and few of the 4wd).

About the gen 1 brats ,well i beleive somthing like 10-20 alive but not on the road and less than 10 driving, i know of one 78 and two 79 and they are in good shape and less, the others are 80-81.

I own a 81 brat dual range and he is driving and soon to get new paint job,but when we meet (the israeli subaru club )i"m the only one with gen 1 brat.

Its sed since they sold here in good numbers but because of a lot of thefths and wrong use with them mostly all of them just gone ,they are very rare this days here in israel

The old ones never came to Europe, only Switzerland had a few.

There were four Gen 1 Brats imported to austria in the early 80s, but all 4 are gone (rust, rust, rust). :banghead:

The Subaru Import to Europe started in 1979.

ok I will keep an eye out for a fender, valance, and a rear bumper but the tail light will be tough cause those are things that get old and brittle over time and people were not careful about that stuff

and Elad welcome to our world that the gen 1's were beaten to death by people that offroaded them or worse (alot of the 4wd's including brats that I have seen have crushed subframes underneath for that reason)

i have an 81 dual range here in oakridge oregon. i know of another one up here that doesnt move much but im sure it runs.

All in all, I'd have to guess between 5-7000.

I've seen three on the streets of Tallahassee, two in Panama City, and two more down here outside of Ocala. All <80. Of those, only one Brat. Rest were wagons. *shrug*

Right now I have a registerable-with-brakes '75 DL 2WD wagon that moosens wants back...badly...and I just bought the '73 split tailgate wagon off eBay. There used to be a green 4WD wagon in this area (moosens chopped it up for parts) and I've seen 2 Brats and a coupe in the past year or so.

What about Oz? When did the blokes Down Under start getting 'em? I know the Aussies like their Soobs. That Killer Green Gen-1 was in Oz.......

Oz was about the same time as NZ. I think we started getting subs about 69. There where a few FF1s getting around in the very early 70s. Subaru has a very strong hold here and very loyal owners. Good to see a forum for the earlier models. Had to get a new steering rack for the GSR ($125.00nz)
