EA81 engine year?

Featured Replies

That's what we are trying to determine - the pattern.

Actually it seems that they may have "rolled over" - hit the 1,000,000 mark sometime in '82. Hence the 01/82 of 931272, and the 04/82 of 009899.

Nope.   We can narrow it down with more info tho:   1. Check for gold sticker on the valve covers. If it has these (they indicate hydro lifters), it came from an 83/84 automatic, or 85-89 Brat or

    Ok - so to summarize (I'll update as people post):     Engine serials / build dates:   - EA81   799337 - 07/81 931272 - 01/82 009899 - 04/82 300305 - 05/83 460419 - 01/84 665918 - 11/84 8

  • We COULD post engine numbers from cars with a build date which would give us a range after a significant number of people posted.

It doesn't seem to be- I know it has solid lifters, and there are no golden stickers. I wonder if it's a factory replacement block?

Some other numbers-

From the 82 block, built 4/82- 009899. Nice low number there.

Do we know if this is an original motor?

That one was an original motor, I bought it from the original owner, only about 80k on the clock, the car rotted out on me.

Ok - so to summarize (I'll update as people post):

Engine serials / build dates:

- EA81

799337 - 07/81

931272 - 01/82

009899 - 04/82

300305 - 05/83

460419 - 01/84

809067 - 05/85

I was trying to see if this small sample would pass the "does this make sence test".

I was wondering if production quantities based off our limited numbers seemed consistant/reasonable.

----------------Months----Units-----Units/month---Units/day ---Units/hour

799337 - 07/81

931272 - 01/82--6--------131,935---21,989.17-----732.97------30.54

009899 - 04/82--4---------78,627---19,656.75-----655.23------27.30

300305 - 05/83-13--------290,406---22,338.90-----744.63------31.03

460419 - 01/84--8--------160,114---20,014.25-----667.14------27.80

809067 - 05/85-16--------348,648---21,790.50-----726.35------30.26

What I see is relatively consistent production numbers when our sample is broken down into months.

This would make sence. When you break our numbers into production/day you begin to see the capacity of the factory.

When you break it into an hourly production it you realize just how fast these motors roll off the line.

If your really get board, you'll see they averaged around a half a motor a minute!

Overall I think our small sample seems to be reasonable.

My '85 Hatch GL has a replacement engine in it, but the owner gave me the original engine: Build date 11-84, original engine S.N. EA81 665918

Ok,

Here is another.

This is from Mad Max

Build Date 10/83

S/N 034828

It would appear this is also an original engine.

It seems to fit in with numbers and production patterns we have.

Your right, the leading 0 needs to be in a different spot to make it fit well.

340k would fit 34k would not. It could be this engine is not an original?

It's history is not known.

If my math is right this motor would have been produced in June of 1982?

EA81 588506 - 07/1984 Subaru Brat Should be original.

Can anyone tell me the sure fire way to check if it's solid or hydro lifters? Thanks.

Build Date 10/83

S/N 034828

That would fit a lot better if the build date was 10/82. Is this a possibility, but you were accidently told 10/83 because the CAR would be an '83?

I thought the same thing, but the car is an 84 which would make the build date right on. From the stats we have gathered so far, it has to have had a motor swap at some point. I'll see it this weekend and I can check the vin and see if the 10th digit is valid for an 84.

I don't know the history of the car. I bought it for $40 and didn't ask questions.

Just tried to add that to the list, but I am no longer able to edit my list post..... mods?

Unless it's an automatic, it's solid. Look for the gold stickers on the valve covers that say "Do not adjust valves". Or remove the valve cover and look at the pushrod - solid lifters have aluminium pushrods with steel caps, and hydro lifters have steel pushrods with no caps (smooth).

I saw some ea82 posted- not sure if this what you want.

07/92 107177 - with a 7 legged spider in the bumper

engineserial107177ys1.jpg

My turn.....

'86 BRAT Build date unknown at this time, may have that tag here somewhere....... Body has gone to scrap yard.

VIN - JF3AU53B3GE500148

Eng ID - 912990

'86 BRAT 12/85

VIN - JF3AU53B2GE501078

Eng ID - 428702

Pretty darn sure this is a replacement engine due to the numbers difference, and especially after reading GD's note on the difference in pushrods. The ones in this engine have a cap on them = solid lifters.

Oh!... ...I didn`t knew that... But EA81`s where made untill... ?

I saw some Subies from the 90`s that came with the EA81, and EA71... and maybe the EA65? -I`m not Sure-

I say that `cos in my country, subaru did sell the Loyale Shaped model, with just 1.3 L (economic model, just 4 gears FWD) 1.6L and 1.8L untill 1994, and also Hatchbacks and Brats did come with 1.6L and 1.8L Engines... I`m not sure, so the Question I got is:

What is (or Was, I Guess) the Last Date of Manufacturing those EA Engines? (all, EA65, EA71, EA81, and EA82?)

Thanx! :)

  • 3 months later...

Americans: That's possible that the smaller, older-tech engines like the EA81/71 were still built and installed into the "EA82 era" cars. Someone in Israel (IIRC) wrote of a his Loyale-bodied wagon having a EA71 (1600) engine, and now we have another example, this time in the Central/South America market.

I'm thinking that the EA82 was introduced to the US market (in the beginning anyway) because of stricter emissions standards and America's general need for more power. Example: look how long the Volkswagen flat 4 was manufactured for new cars outside the US until being completely discontinued.

( I know I had more I wanted to add, but I've lost my train of thought:banghead: )

My 2 bucks

I can vouch for ea71's in ea82 style vehicles. It happened. Not too bad little cars either.

'83 GL Wagon, build date 11/82, EA81 stamped on passenger cylinder case front top, bellhousing has a sticker: T81PA2H-BE followed by another sticker with 039802 [i assume that's the number we want].

Inside of hood has 109ci and valve adjustment specs with engine cold.

I'll have to check out my EA81T. I wonder how they correspond with the EA81s.

i need some aluminum wheels, and was wondeing if anyone had them? thier the four stars from 1984. i dont know what thier called.if you can help me please email http://www.greencar294@yahoo.com thank you.

What does this have to do with EA81s and serial numbers?

Post in the wanted section of the forums please.

at least it looks like a rolling 6 digits! now you just need to identify particular case casting differences :)
