Spare wheel storage for Hatch??

Featured Replies

What have people done to store there, much larger than standard, spare wheels in, or on, there ea81 hatchbacks??

I have only recently purchased a spare wheel for my hatch and it's a 27inch offroad tyre so having it in the car uses up an aweful lot of space.

Im sure i have seen some people run with a spare wheel carrier on the hatches.... anyone got pics of these or any other options?? As much info and pics relating to this that i can find would be great.

Thanks guys.

Dave

id think a swing gate would look awesome on a hatch. i like the whole idea of the wheel hanging off the back would be awesome. i want one for my brat but i dont want to make my own bumper

Yeah u are thinking along the lines that i am... only because i have a custom made tow bar under my bumper i was thinking about using that to bolt the swing arm to.

I think MikeW has his mounted on the rear. Mine is strapped to the roof. If I roll I got that to protect my noggin:D Yeah, I know, not a great idea. But I'm working on a roll cage.

I dont like the idea of having to remove/disconnect something to access the gear I have in the back.

It took me over 4 months but i have this problem solved now... the pics do not show where i have moved the number plate to but i have relocated it to half on and half below the drivers side rear bumper.

It does fold down but i don't have to fold it down to access the boot... when it folds down it sits level so i can use it to sit a table top on when camping.

That is an awesome design. Going to show this post to my BF to get the tire off the roof:banana:

Nice Job:clap:

I happen to LIKE my roof tire, thanks!

Folks always wave at me now!

I say "how'd ya know it was me?"

They reply .... "the tire on the roof"

In all seriousness....that is a nice job:clap:

I may just have to "borrow" your design for my wagon!

Subarino's on the right track - Mike W once told me that he wouldn't have mounted the side carrier the same way if he could do it again, because the upper mount is weird to configure to the car.
