EA81 Convertable??

Featured Replies

Hey, I was filling up with gas and i looked to the left of me and a black on black, Subaru 2 door convertable. Was that home made or was that the real thing?

Thank you

John Arne:banana:

It's kinda both.

I believe dealers were sending these out to be "converted" back then and selling them at the Dealership as a new car.

I have only seen the 2 door sedans converted:mad:

Try a search on Convertable on this forum?

Either way they are keepers!

Glenn,

82 Hatch, now a convertable......

01 Forester, hard top..........

I stared at it, and my girlfriend thought I was staring at the lady driving it...I got armed punched pretty damn hard.

PM Richie rich. I believe he owns one. Maybe you could convince him to post a picture.

Richie has pics on his Web site. I just posted about these too--found one about 20 minutes away that the owner might be willing to part with. It's an auto GL-10. From what I understand, about 300 were made in So. Cali by a firm that makes convertible tops. The tops are still available. The one on the one I found is power, but I don't know if they all are. I believe the cars used were all 1983 models (I've never seen/heard of one with a GLF badge) but they were made between '82-'84. SoA did NOT authorize them, nor did they carry any convertible-specific parts (tops and upper framework, tiedowns and such).

I've seen the one your talking about, but it was back in the late 80's or early 90's.

Glad to hear its still around. This topic has been talked about so much, I'm sure theres something in the Archives, pics included.

There is (was) supposedly one here in Columbus, OH, and it was up for sale a couple months back.

Never got a chance to see it - the dude never returned my dozen or so calls. Very dissapointing....

I suspect it may have been owned at one time by Buddy Byers, the big Subaru dealer in town. OHNoah once told me about a customized Sube he saw that was owned by this guy. Maybe it started out as a limited model brought in to increase showroom traffic.

Here are pictures of mine.

There was also a nice black one in North Carolina, but none of us ever kept any pictures of it

They were not all GL10. They were whatever the dealership sent down there. There use to be a gold GL Auto in town but I haven't seen it lately.

hey richie.. are you going for a stock interior on that convertible restoration? or maybe blue XT6 seats front and rear would look sharp...

oh, and do you mean THIS black convertible? :brow:

How would you go about doing a homemade convertable 'conversion' on a old suby? im assuming it could be done on a coupe relativly easily, or am i wrong?

ya but the hard parts making the roof fit back on! The celica's homemade t-tops required a piece of vinvl riveted onto the body, which folded between the rear headliner and roof panel in the back when not in use. Before that it was duct tape and garbage bags :D

Hey, it was like the black one. A GL-10... It had a crome front end and those crome light guards on the back, it was the arco next to southcenter.
