New Toy, 88 RX

Featured Replies

Hey guys, wanted to share some pics of my new toy. under 58000 miles, window sticker, all maintenance records. Sold new in CT, spent all of its life in CA. No rust, completely original. Blown headgasket, will be tearing down soon. Will get better pics when it comes out of the garage, was dark when I put it in

Looks very nice! And it's a 5 spd dual range!! Cool car! This would be awesome to do a EJ swap!! Nice buy!

I dont know, this is too nice, I think it will stay stock. Unless a nice ej22T donor comes along! :)

Dude, did not know i was bidding against another board member $601.11??

Would have cost me another 300.00 to make the drive.....Congrats.....

Yeah sometimes it's a small world when talking subaru's. I wanted one of these in 1988 when I was working for subaru and couldn't afford one. There was no way I was going to let it get away! thanks

Keep it ORIGINAL wont ever the same once you start cutting on i........

Wow, unbelievable find. Very cool. Keep us updated on the rebuild. :)

Still runs, drove it onto the trailer. Story is that it had a radiator issue and overheated while driving. They had it towed home, installed a new radiator. Ran badly, so they took it to a local shop. The shop from the sounds of it wanted to pull the engine and completely disassemble for inspection. When the owner decided that he didn't want to deal with it, the shop owner immediately wanted to buy it from him.He towed the car home and put it on craigslist which is when I first contacted him. he then put it on ebay, and I ended up with it. Looking it over, number 3 cylinder is very low on compression, coolant in the oil, coolant smoke from exhaust. I am hoping it is just a head gasket issue, will know more when I get it apart. I want to keep it stock, although I do have a set of Enkai's waiting to go on something.

thats a nice come up, epically with that low of millage.

makes me miss my 86.5 turbo 3dr i had.

Another twin for my RX!!

Keep it stock till the engine goes, then swap a EJ something into her, and keep the dual range. These cars are just too much fun in the snow!!

Hey are you the guy i ran into at the Carson City PAP yard 2 weeks ago?

"you" were with a lady i would presume to be your wife.

I was the bearded idiot pulling rear discs off an XT,

"we" chatted for a moment about an unbelievable RX you'd just acquired :)

Great find

greenley, yeah that was me, how did your brakes turn out?

i would put a new HG on the side its blown, and drive it for another 52k.

Nice score, I saw the ebay listing right after auction ended, or it would be in my drive. we would have had a bidding war, but i was too late auction over, done errrr.

I need a rust free body low miles to put my ej22t in from my RUSTY 92.......

Excuse my ignorance when it comes to the RX, but if it's a 5spd dual range, then why does it say "Full Time 4WD," on the back of the car? Is it only full time 4WD when you lock the center diff? Just curious as my 1990 Legacy was Full Time 4WD which meant it was AWD all of the time. On the RX I'd assume you can engage it and disengage the full time 4WD? Thanks for "learnin," me in advance.

Nope, the RX has a transmission like your LEgacy. Its all-wheel-drive. Full Time 4WD is the same thing. it cannot be shifted out of 4WD. The Dual Range means there is a normal (high) range and a Low Range.

The diff lock just locks the center diff, making it 50/50 front to rear. When its unlocked, whichever end of the car that has the least amount of traction gets most the power... like any open diff would act.

It is full time 4WD but has the option of having lo range as well. It's either in 4hi or 4lo, and I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that it has a lockable center diff as well. They only came in these cars! One of the special things about them

I vote for the EJ22 swap. That car deserves it. The EA82T will only disapoint you.

+1... Originality is only cool for so long... then you swap in an EJ with a turbo:banana:

Nope this one will stay the way Fuji made it, lol . My other cars are a 2003 Ford Mustang GT, and a 2004 Ford P71 police interceptor, When i feel the need for speed these will come out.

The rear discs were for a fellow board member.

All my subs are already equipped;)

What a small world this Subaru community is.

Keep an eye on the meet 'n' greet section for

local wrenchfests or wheelin' trips.

I know TSJ took his old RX up Jumbo Grade,

so there's proof that they can hang.

No EJ22T?

You mean you don't want to do 120 in the snow

speaking with full bias, EJ swapped RX is the way to go.

The one I got was minus engine so the swap was pretty much a given.

Keeping it original, I would atleast slap on an intercooler. Other than that have fun.
