July 27, 200916 yr I have my engine out to do a rebuild (1987 gl-10 awd turbo automatic) and I was looking at the bell housing/front diff cover and I saw this piece just hanging out. Looks like it sheared right off. How could this of possibly broke like this? The next question is does anyone have one of these I can buy? Please save me from going to the stealership! Thanks Grant
July 27, 200916 yr Wow someone has a auto-turbo. Most likley failure mode is a stress crack or a poor shaft casting to begin with. Thats why bridges fail so many many many years after they are built. Write subaru a nasty letter
July 28, 200916 yr Holy Cow! I Couldn`t imagine what Kind of Problems could bring that Broken Part if it Breaks while Drivin` in the Middle of Nowhere... ... Please save me from going to the stealership!... Ha, Ha! ... So Funny!
July 28, 200916 yr ah, that is a standard wear item. jk. did it break under normal driving situations, or was it beaten on terribly/
July 28, 200916 yr Author Thanks for filling in on what it is, It aligns the tc on the bell housing and the oil pump shaft and the other shaft run thru the center. The thing is, the car is in excellent condition and was never beaten. It was owned by a 70 year old lady from day one and it has 130k miles on it. Sounds like turbo automatics are more rare? The car has soo many abbreviations: Subaru XT GL-10 AWD Turbo. The water pump siezed and the car overheated that is why I pulled the motor oin the first place. I happened to look in the bell housing when I was cleaning the engine bay and saw it. The car ran and shifted perfect, which leads me to believe it must of been extremely fragile and broke when I pulled the motor. The 2 inner shafts are as straight as an arrow so I know I didn't bend it too far...

You pulled teh TC out still attached to the flexplate? That could likely have put side force on it and finished breaking what may have already been cracked. My guess is the car sat for long periods of time(must hasve to only have 130K, moisture buikt up at the end of it's seal and rusted it.
July 29, 200916 yr Author Well, 4x4 welder just pmed me and said his is different than mine so if anybody out there has a 1987 auto tranny laying around or know someone who does, I am in need of this part. Help!!!! Thanks Grant
July 29, 200916 yr I don't know if they ever put a 3speed auto in a turbo car, or if the early 4EAT was different, but my 89 has a different setup. On mine, that piece goes all the way through the separator plate and comes out from the inside after fully disassembling the transmission. I pulled the bell/front diff housing off to be sure. I am going to check out some parts at a Subaru garage here later this week, and I'll ask them about it.
July 29, 200916 yr Author Do you have a picture of the one from your trans? Also I would appreciate it if you asked the subaru garage about one. I can't wait to drive it again! Edited July 29, 200916 yr by zartman456 sp
July 30, 200916 yr I can probably get a picture tomorrow, but there's not much to see, it's just a stub sticking out of the center plate. There was a guy on here who changed the front diff out in a 4EAT, and has a bunch of pictures of it torn apart.
July 30, 200916 yr Author I just want to see the part you have to see if it could be compatible in any way. My part also bolts from the inside of the diff facing the front of the car so maybe I can swap some parts around. I looked for that thread but couldnt find it. I wish I could find a microfiche online.
July 31, 200916 yr Author Would this be the 3at transmission? I just called the stealership and the stator shaft is obsolete so no longer available. If it was available it would of been $250.00.
