  1. I think Haynes meant Newton metres not ft lbs. Standard torque for a 6mm bolt(w/a 10mm head) is 12-15 Nm or 9-11 ft lbs.

  2. We put an alternator in my son's 04, and two in my 05.. I don't know how strong I am, but I did indeed cry... If anyone here has one and needs to change one out, get a Bosch. In the 01 - 04, Bosch alternators are brand new. In the 05 and up, Bosch only offers a remanned. BUT, the Bosch is the only company that will install a brand new regulator and rectifier pack whether it needs it or not in all Ford and GM applications. Everyone else including Motorcraft only replace the electrical parts if they're bad at the time of rebuild, which means they can fail months later. If it was a half hour job, it would only be an inconvenience. In the V6 Tribute/Escape, it's an 8 hour job. John

  3. Interesting - but yeah the twin scroll just makes the turbo spool faster - the compressor wheel is still limited being it's a TD04. It's not going to make anywhere close to 300 wheel. Those engines were designed to have turbo power, but be *smooth* in there application of power. Thus the twin scroll and tiny turbo - the idea was to make them feel like a luxury car with a bigger engine - it's not a sports car engine and doesn't have the camshaft profile or the turbo for big power. That said, yes it will definitely be mid-200's with the right intake, exhaust and tuning. If that's the power you want, you will be happy. It won't be "fast" by today's STi standards but it will be fun. GD

  4. Electric choke if equipped, or idle stop/anti-diesel solenoid are the only two I can think of on an EA81 carb. Dan

  5. We generally go with 7 ft/lbs (10 nm) and blue loctite on the oil pump, water pump, etc. They have a tendency to strip being in old aluminum. We heli-coil them all the time due to previous over-tightening. GD

  6. Looks like this one had headlight washers! Was that ever offered in the US? Any guesses on what the button to the right of the defrost does?

  8. Decided to take my 85 Brat for a late evening cruise. I just installed the roll-bar lights and wanted to see how they would do at night. Stopped for a bit to enjoy the silence of an old farm road and snapped a picture.

  9. Hello! Just joined after buying a 1991 Loyale "Minty". All original and only thing wrong is the rear passenger door does not lock/unlock automatically with the rest of the doors. Even if the person unlocks on the door manually from the inside they cannot get out with the door handle. Someone has to let them out from the outside handle. That and the thermostat might need to be replaced because it gets very hot and then suddenly drops to normal temperature.... but this has changed over the last couple weeks -- it no longer gets very near the H (high temp), rather, only to about a 1/4" from the top, then settles back to about 1/4" from the bottom. The only thing I plan to change are the speakers, and put an AUX input (somewhere) for my phone. Also would like to replace my cigarette lighter with a USB car charger -- I am told I can simply pull out the cig lighter, leaving its housing in place and plug in one of these USB car chargers. That doesn't make sense to me, since the housing is not a 12 V DC charger, but a BURNER for the cig plug. (?). I am under the impression the entire cig housing needs to come out and a 12 V DC plug needs to be wired in. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any known gremlins; please don't hesitate to share. So far I love this thing! ("Downgraded" from a 2006 LR3 (JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!)).

  10. New to the forum! I picked up my first Subaru in April: '84 GL sedan. It's the definition of poverty-spec and I assume one of very few FWD models anyone bothered to keep going this long. There's some rust along the rockers and a few other kinks still to work out, but it's exactly my kind of car and I'm enjoying it so far. It's one-owner and 100% original, with plans to keep it that way.

  11. Spotted these two old beauties in front of 'Boston's Auto' in Soldotna Alaska. They say they're Subaru specialists, but these both look broken down unfortunately.

  12. Just finished getting my 87 GL wagon road trip ready for the summer in Alaska scouting places to live up here. A little rust work, some tinted windows, roof box. I hope it runs forever!
