  1. I wouldn't install any water pump that wasn't OEM. Also the oil pump could use a new o-ring if I understood the mechanic properly. I've found that not rushing the removal of the timing cover studs helps in not twisting the nut out of the rears. A liberal application of a quality rust penetrant would help also (Kroil or Yield are the best; PB blaster isn't nearly as good). Replacing the studs with never-seeze will make it easier the next time you do a belt. The rear covers can be found easily at a wrecking yard; just make sure the nuts are not spun.
  2. Judging how few running Brats are left, the value is bound to increase. Looks like mine is looking better and better.
  3. Cool, still want to buy mine? If you got $3800 I should maybe raise the price on mine. Just kidding.
  4. Faulty bearing is usually a growl or loud screech. A leaking pump is very quiet. To narrow down the source of the noise get a long screwdriver and hold in on a non moving portion of the pump and put your ear to the handle. This will amplify the noise and you can isolate where it's coming from that way. Just stay away from all the moving parts while you're doing this.
  5. OEM parts for a complete change (belt, idlers, tensioner, and water pump) are over $500 even with a good discount. Also figure about 4 hours labor for the job; close to $1000 from a dealer; not much less from an independent shop. Ask around.
  6. I stumbled across this by accident and it looks pretty cool. Unfortunately, It's not free and I'm not ready to spend my money without knowing if it's very useful (been there and done that with too many CDs on ebay:mad:) Anyway, anyone used this before and found it useful? http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/index.jsp
  7. '93 driver's door handle. I'll see what I can do this coming Saturday.
  8. Check my write-up in the USRM on removing the axles without taking the hubs apart. Quite easy on the EJ cars.
  9. I couldn't tell you about the difference in performance, but I've installed both. The DF version is a mirror image of the DG and I preferred it since the throttle cable was easier to configure with the DFV. Performance wise it didn't make a noticeable difference on my two Brats.
  10. Door handle for what year Legacy and which side? Front or rear? Glad to do that. We could have you over and have a door handle party!
  11. Your mechanic would have had to "reset" the tensioner to install the timing belt properly (or replace it). They can be re-used numerous times from what I understand if they have been re-set. I would ask the mechanic what he did; if he didn't re-set it, then I'd have him do it over with a new one; this is a critical item and needs to be working properly to avoid an issue. With your interference engine a timing belt "accident" could trash your engine.
  12. Here's a link to the story and results: http://www.stpr.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=424 Pastrana and Block DNF; Tanner Foust 2nd and Andy Pinker 4th overall.
  13. Website is down for "repairs". They are trying to arrange credit card payment for on-line pre-registration and something went "south." Email apparently through the website also. Should be back up tomorrow sometime.
  14. Hey, Spark....glad to hear from you. Keep in touch. Anytime you need work on your car, come on over.
  15. I've done at least a dozen of those swaps including two Brats which I'm still driving and never needed to change a proportioning valve change.
  16. Found this on the ORG website: Rally Against Parkinson's - Jul 5, 2008 Organized By : ORG (Oregon Region) The Oregon Rally Group Presents: The Rally Against Parkinson's July 5th, 2008 Entry Fee: $25.00 gets you the rally, regularity laps aaround Portland International Raceway, a chance at fabulous prizes and a free barbecue dinner. Poker hands will cost extra, price is TBA at this time. Start at 10:30am to 11:00am from any Portland Metro Area Subaru Dealer you choose! Teams meet up at Portland International Raceway by 11:00 (roughly) for registration and regularity legs start at a little after noon. You must start at a Subaru Dealership, please do not come directly to PIR. This is a tour rally, no traps, no tricks and a nice scenic and fun drive. This is an excellent event for the novice team to begin with. It will be challenging enough for experienced teams to zero controls. Running concurrently with the rally will be a Poker Run. Best hands and low ball hands win prizes donated by top rally drivers, top rally teams and many local establishments. All vehicles welcome that are street licensed with two occupants. This is an excellent event for vintage cars as a warm up for the Monte Shelton as there are no gravel roads. All proceeds go to Parkinson's Resources of Oregon. For more information contact johnelkin@comcast.net
  17. Here's the pic of the new fender (came off a wagon). Just a trace of the old pin striping that didn't match; interesting how sunshine will wash out the original color. Hardly noticeable, and certainly better than that botched touch-up job.
  18. My wife is the BEST cook! Anyway, I will have to back the car out of the garage maybe since I forgot to take a pic of it earlier.
  19. Russ was kind enough to come by yesterday and give me a hand installing and cleaning up a replacement fender on my "pristine" Brat. Car looks so much better. Thanks. The bad ugly: Anyone looking for a cheap Brat fender?
  20. Not usually wet and muddy; the first event this year was, but the next two were pretty dry. Current weather patterns could have another wet one, but we won't know until it happens. A pleasure to have someone "non local" at the event. Welcome to the great Northwest.
  21. Yea, I don't know how that happened. I noted the discrepancy between the ORG date and SCCA date back in March and notified ORG. Apparently ORG folded on the date and never updated the calendar until recently. I'm sorry you'll be missing this.
  22. I can fax you the pinout drawing from the '97 Impreza (EJ22) if you drop me a fax # by PM if you think that would help you.
  23. we need a firm count of people who are planning to attend and compete in the Fathers Day Rally X. We need at least 15 racers to make the payment on the facility, and more we have the better and more fun as well. please post back if you plan to attend. If everyone will talk at least one of their friends into commin out and racin, kickin your friends butt is fun! Reply to prglist@yahoogroups.com. Thanks, Jon pilot of the flyin pickle
  24. That's not the kind of weather that's common near Seattle, but this is the reason I'm selling the Brat....I really want to get the Forester and the Impreza into the garage overnight. Hail can happen anytime, but at least the cars will be protected while I sleep.
  25. June 21 and 22. Two day rallycross featuring tough competition, fun, and excitement.....maybe even a little rain to make it more interesting. http://www.oregonrally.com/Event_Detail.cfm?EventID=551 And for those of us that are doing a rain dance (like me): http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=Hillsboro%2C+OR A more detailed view of the monthly weather for the Hillsboro Airport area: http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KHIO/2008/6/9/MonthlyHistory.html#calendar
