  1. Agree. But if he wants the shortcut , it’s been done and documented in the archives. And it’s not all that dramatic stuff you threw in there. Sure it’s hack. But it’s what folks will do sometimes here and there. Pretty sure this only works for the EA81’s 1980-84 USA and Gen 2 Brat and Hatchbacks until their end of run. Chris that did the original post is no hack. He’s a really smart guy. Dremel tool , facing the box right side up , couple hoses and a link.
  2. Gates and Delco same part no. but $1 difference. Those look metal. Started another post about my needing a new bearing in my tensioner pulley. Thanks for any help. Cheers
  3. Thanks for experienced input. Yes , I sure do normally get dealer parts. Up to this point I’ve had luck with well kept used of these pulleys , but it’s 2018 and time has drained local supplies.
  4. I’m highly recommending you research the archives and just be patient a bit at this moment. You should only need to disconnect hoses , and unhook the throw link and swap the unit. Put the link back on and hoses and if desired you can put the cut out piece back in. Take a look before you leap. Cheers!
  5. There is archived a way to remove and replace the core thru the drivers side , I’m pretty sure , using a dremel tool. Personally I don’t have a problem removing the dash but it is a bit more involved that just the core via this method mentioned. The original poster was Chris Lantieri , who’s board name I can’t recall. This is for all EA81 cars and Gen 2 Brat.
  6. I probably have a few buried away that I’d need to dig for - like soon but not too soon. Also , I’m still not 100% sure but there’s a chance I’ll just part out my 78 4WD wagon which is the same engine and tranny harness. Again , can’t promise soon. But at least I’m here for backup if you don’t score soon. Most vehicles this old it’s probably not a bad idea to at least trace and replace the wire(s) giving you problems , or create your own harness. Motorcycle folks do it , just a little more for a 70’s Subaru.
  7. Possibly the oldest Subaru in Sweden is sitting in a dealership , a 1976 metal flake brown 2 door sedan. That was mine. Sent to Sweden with only 36,000 miles on it. I think the family name is Phillips. Two of the three sons involved were rally racers in the European series. Just a little story for you. Enjoy !
  8. Can you give us an idea of what you’re looking to do? The general purpose of what you’d like to put together- track? Road ? Off road ? Weekend rally? Scare the neighbors ? ( my favorite ) And what body as your base? Enjoy !!
  9. Agree and disagree a little , but in general proper advice , thanks. Scott - my 78 Subaru wagon survived up here in CT by the salt water - Zeibart , done correctly. Pete - same as above. Not much hope , but there is some. Just learn to enjoy using it like the tool that it is. Romp in the snow. Howl at the moon. Maybe stuff happens and you get another one from out west.
  10. If it was that cheap I’d just run it and see how it goes. Nothing there too hard to replace. I’d guess the initial builder did it correctly. Looks like a great effort with decent cash , not overboard. My thought is that engine is a 90-94 that got built. Enjoy it and show pics of the major roost !!!
  11. Yeah man , the good old names are now the sketchy. I’m curious what people are going to reply here in 2018. This subject comes up often and the scene has been changing.
  12. Hand pump Sprayer unless you have air equipment , protect the driveway , you’ll likely find videos online or at least more mention in forums. I always heard that a light machine oil is best over the used motor oil. But do research. Have to repair your wheel aprons all the way up top at the horizontal seam. All crud builds up there and created the pinholes that carry that water down to your wheel arches and the rear door area , and sills. To get real about it you want the rear wheels off and maybe even have to drop the suspension to be able to get in there well enough. But that kind of effort pays off. Neglecting that is saying you’re not willing to go the full measure to protect your little beauty.
  13. Geez , I just sold one not long ago. Well before the winter anyways. I might have more used , but not likely another new one. Looks like another snow coming - this ain’t Texas - but after that looking like I’ll be able to go through storage.
  14. There’s also a cover channel that goes over the rim of the pass through hole so you don’t rip stuff or scrape your hands. Anyways , you’ll see if you ever get the opportunity. I’ve done this swap on ea81,EA82, and now have done it with our 92 Legacy Sedan.
  15. Yeah , snag a GL-10 rear seats if possible. You can fit 8’ lengths and even a ladder that way. Yeah I know you’re not going to do any of that , but just stating some fact.
  16. Would not hurt the cause if you followed his direction. Is the car Front Wheel Drive?
  17. Sorry Mike , I just realized you’re not a kid. Pardon that remark. Cheers!
  18. Oh gosh , no 80’s stuff for me. Not interested in trades. There’s another older member here , I’m not sure is active here these days that managed to get a few new engines and transmissions from the Subaru folks in south NJ. He’s a cop , great guy , many of us have met and spent time with. That said , this is a 100% new block with rebuilt heads. There’s around 1100 miles on this engine. You can email me at moosens at yahoo to discuss further. I understand if you’re young etc. but I’m older and know what I have and would rather tuck it away than let it go cheap.
  19. Hey just saying , they do things in Brooklyn and other places , that’s all. It was a common practice that I’m sure is getting more difficult. The same risks were at place back then too. But that didn’t stop people. I have nothing to worry about. Saved someone I know lots of money though. Sorry to suggest criminal activity , just checking to see if folks still hear about it.
