Welcome to the board. Justys are great little gas-misers, and the ECVT tranny was really ahead of its time when it came out! That said, be careful with the ECVT tranny, they dont tend to last as long as normal automatics or manuals, and nobody knows how to work on the darn things.

some good info there, but for your own good dont copy the way he made his lift blocks! Thats some scary s@#% right there. Follow subarubrat's method, as I did.

Vancouver Island Suby Mini-Meet
bushbasher replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, walking back up in the morning to recover a vehicle always sucks. Luckily when my t-case broke (you can hear what did it in on one of those videos) I could still get it home. The other nice thing about wheeling up there is that its all uphill on the way. When something breaks you can coast most of the way home without any power. -

contemplating subaru engine drop into samurai

people have actually been machining suzuki axle shafts to fit into the star of an ea81 outer cv joint, then machining the stub of the cv cup to go into the samurai hub. The result is that a sammy toothpick axle can handle up to 35" tires. Of course housing reinforcement is needed so you the axle housing doesnt bend when you go that big -
Why do people hate Loyales?
bushbasher replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ive actually been thinking about getting a loyale as a new body for my 4x4 drivetrain. They are newer, so they often have less rust around here. The things that make the loyale less desireable IMO are the non-dual range trannys and the lower trim level. -
what happens if you tow an AWD improperly?

another thing to consider is heat buildup. When you are spinning the rear output on the transmission, especially on an automatic, you wont be getting any oil to that area to cool it down. So at high speed or long distances you could be dealing with annealed bearings/output shafts, or even having it seize up on you. -
Today Vanislru and Phishy75 came over to check out the wagon, do a little wheelin' and go look for some needed parts at RCU Auto Parts. Up in my backyard, I bottomed out my t-case on some bedrock, which broke my t-case mount off. I had to limp it back to the house. Still havent had anything I've fabbed break on me yet, so I'm happy. I just should have made some skidplates. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/129100_1661res.jpg As you can see the aluminum case has shattered where it connects to the rubber pillow block mount. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/129100_1662res.jpg Thats my buddy pete starin at the camera. I had to limp it home with the t-case hanging down, and some funny angles on the driveshafts. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/129100_1665res.jpg Heres my wagon, vanislrus wagon, and phishy75s wagon in the back. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/129100_1663res.jpg A nice shot of vanislrus wagon. Man, I have to attest to the coolness of this thing. It really pulls hard with the TWE pipes and the intercooler, and those tires work amazingly well. Very sticky. Combined with the turbo this made for some sweet 4-wheel roostertails going up the mossy wet rock Vanislru took some pics and videos, maybe we can get those on here soon.

one of your posts was within 2min of dragonlee's, the rest are within spans of hours. I have re-read the posts, I don't see it. Please explain it in more detail. Your response may not have been such a deep personal attack, but your general holier than thou, self-important attitude is insulting, thats for sure.

rusted through or surface rust? things rusting through are often structural and especially if you plan to drive the car hard, should be fixed by welding in metal. Since I'm guessing that you're going to have the car apart anyways, maybe take off the suspension, leave the motor/tranny out and put the shell up on some blocks or maybe even on its side with enough padding, and work on it like that. So in this case I would deal with it first. It might be an idea to get all the major bodywork done first and then start the mechanicals when everythings cleaned up and painted. Doing bodywork doesnt make for a great magazine article IMO cause its the same as any other car, so that might factor into decisions of whether it should be done first last or spread out through the build.

I have a hard time believing that guy could offroad at all with tires that huge 255/85/16=33"!!!1 -
555 timers are certainly dead cheap. doesnt sound like there would be more than 10 bucks worth of parts on the circuit board.
-
I would skip the loyales altogether like skip said and find a legacy, or keep looking for an 87-89 SPFI DR wagon or an 85-89 turbo wagon. The loyales have a more basic trim level, like a DL, and they have that lame vacuum actuator crap for 4wd.

an ea82 is really frickin wide man, I think if you got out and started measuring you'd realize how silly it would be. I'm betting youd have 4" of head coming out each inner fender. an ea81 would be skinnier but its still pretty wide. -
ya guys head on over. I gots to show off my wagon, and drool all over Trevor's tires and motor I just brought the manifold out from the shed. I'll be home all day Sat, work from 10am-6pm on Sun. and 6am-12pm on weekdays. I gave trev my # but I'll give you mine 642-6441

I dont see how you could possibly fit the heads in between the frame rails. I thought of this briefly once but dumped it for that reason. -
Im in the same boat graduated last year but still at home, hardly any expenses except for my projects and a movie or dinner here or there. Life is good. I'll be going to college this coming fall though, might move out then.
