I'd like to get 4-low working
subiemech85 replied to renob123's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
YES keeping the engine at peak performance while keeping up with traffic, even in DC "rush hour" splitting is fun, something I miss on the BRAT and wagon I currently drive oooooo look we are going 10 mph faster now, time to take it out of low..... goes the drive on a snowy road -
if it truly is stuck shut, it will hurt mileage with no choke, may have to pump it to start ea81 with ea82 intake and carb starts fine at -20f with no choke!!
-
top of carb canister on left side with a wire is for the coil spring system to control the position you may want to wire it open and see what happens, may be stuck shut ea71 are cold blooded you are missing about 20 mpg!!, which is possible with a stuck shut choke

you CAN shift from and to low while driving at "almost" any speed think of it as a 8 spd or 10 spd and remember the shifting pattern when doing so as long as you will not run out of REV you can shift into low 'tis especially useful with the full time 4wd and locking center dif. -
also works good to lift front of narrow front tractors I also have an "accordian" pantograph jack and trans. jack that uses the same basic principle
-
sure it does 50% E85 to try to clean out the system, remember: the ski wagon ran good with this carb on E85 it was also doing this to me with KUM & go and GIT & go gas even did this with a big vac. leak filters are fine this isn't a SVX, it doesn't care what it has will try either a different weber or a rebuild kit could also switch back to the hitachis

blasted thing does not want to run right when at part throttle as in when you let off the gas a little to slow down just a bit or quit going faster spit sputter cough pop... seems to be fine while throttle open or closed timing has little effect, but seems better at 20+ than 10 idle mixture set in middle of good range, but has little effect manual choke off 130 psi compression valves set correct, fresh tuneup 28 mpg!
