Tranny fix vs. Tranny swap.
Sonicfrog replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
BTW: The FT4WD is a 5 speed manual made for the RX series. I put it in last year when I ditched the crappy 3 spd A/T. I have to get a 5 speed from a turbo model to match the spline count on my turbo GL-10. -
Here's the deal. Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, has a FT4WD tranny that leaks fluid, which drips on the exhaust and causes a big stink. The fluid that is in the tranny has aluminum flakes, so something is wearing internally. Should I try and fix this tranny or just replace it. The J-Yard is having a 1/2 off sale this week-end, and there are a few GL's around, though I'm not sure if they are turbos (spline count issue w/ turbo vs non-turbo). I do like the all-wheel drive aspect of the current tranny, but I've never work on the internals of a tranny, and I'm not sure if I want to attemp a rebuild, as a swap would take less time and effort. Any thoughts?

OK. I forgot to check on this the last week-end at the J-Yard. I'm going back this week-end to get a couple of trannies, one for an 84 Tercel, and maybe one for Murph to replace the 5 speed leaky tranny. That will be a bummer as that is the famed Full Time 4 WD with the locking diff., and I doubt I will be able to find one at the yard, but I do have my fingers crossed.

Oh, please tell me you didn't have a TR-7. "The Shape Of Things To Come" came and went!!!! ThisTR-7 vs Ford Scorpio video is pretty funny.
-
The 4EAT is supposed to do a good job. Maybe the next GL I buy will have one of those. I would love to check them out.
-
Egads, you scared me. I was about to run out and re-time Murph.... Oh hell, maybe I'll go out and do it anyway!!!

Look at alternator locations on cars in the junkyard. Look at starter locations. MAYBE a head job is a bit simpler on your standard I4 FWD econobox, but thats pushing it. if the EA82 has a "problem-prone" service life of 200-350K miles or higher, than I will STILL take it over a honda, an escort, a cavalier, a toyota.. even a similar vintage Nissan... Yep. When someone makes a face at me because I like Subaru's, I will, if we're by the car, show them the location of alternator, A/C compressor, P/S pump, and starter, and then they get it, especialy if they've had to have any one of those replaced in their newer Honda's, Toyota's, and especialy Ford or GM prodcts.

Caboo... What The Hell!!!! You're only 22!!! If you've been driving since 16, that's only 6 years of driving. Let's see, 20 Subies in 6 years.... that's 3.33333333333333333 Subies per year!!! I'm way impressed!:lol: My first Soob was Cy, short for Cyclops. This $400 1980 white wagon had a 1600 that had a bad cylinder and smoked like a crop duster. I absolutely LOVED that little car. Hauled my band equipment 'round town. Got me everywhere I needed to go, including trips from San Diego to Lancaster and Fresno and even Big Bear for some skiing. The suspension on those models is miraculous for such a tiny car. It felt like there was nothing it couldn't do, nowhere it couldn't go. Oh, it was named Cyclops because, of coarse, had and thus named because it had the much coveted passing light, or "third eye". I would have kept it forever, but it have a bad case of rust and I couldn't afford to replace the engine. Next was "Whitey" the $300 N/A SPFI 87 5 speed hi / lo wagon. Had it for three plus years. Put a new engine in it and had absolutely no problems with it, except for a broken timing belt, caused by a bad tensioner. I needed a truck for my business, and ended up doing an even trade for a 94 Toyota V6 pick-up extra cab with broken valves. That Toyota engine (3VZ) is a PITA to work on. Now I have Murphy, the infamous $500 '87 T-Wag, and Red, the $300 '94 Alpine Legacy wagon, both with new engines. Because I had never worked with a turbo before, it was looking for resources on the web and found USMB. Murphy got it's name because everything that could go wrong during an engine swap did; I won't go into it since it's all documented on this forum (search for Murphy or $500 and see what comes up). Regardless, Murph is the funnest car to drive, especially now that it has the RX suspension and a FT4WD 5 speed with locking diff. can't wait for the snow. Red is the newest addition to the family. The only real challenge here was getting the title cleared. It took six months. This wagon is so refined compared to Murph. That engine is smooth. Great for those long road trips to San Diego. The suspension was not designed to push any limits, but will get you where you want to go in comfort. So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

This doesn't look good...

Wish I lived closer so I could help. The tirbo may not be the most reliable thing on the road, but they sure are a blast to drive. You know, a used imported sngine for these is cheap. I got mine for about $450, and later found out I could have gotten one little cheaper. I think the Subaru engine is one of the easiest to pull. -
Hu-Wha..............??????

I almost had one for $1000. Before I found Murphy, there was one for sale a few miles from my house. When I stumbled upon it, someone else was there talking about getting the cash from the bank. In retrospect, I wish I would have given the owner my number as I don't know if that buyer actually completed the deal.

Oh, your ruining all the fun:banana::banana:!!!

OK so anyone who has an EA82 has probably dealt with a loose oil cap, shown here in a video compliments of Corolla Frenzy. Question, will an oil fill tube from an EJ22 bolt right on to an EA82? I'm going to the J-Yard today and will investigate while there.

About the oil cap. Bent the tabs on the cap in just bit to give you a better fit. The Legacy has a much better oil fill cap and spout.... Hey, I wonder if that will bolt right on to an EA 82. I'll have to post that question. Off topic: Corolla, I have a crippled 2wd 84 Tercel wagon sitting in my garage that needs a new auto tranny. I am going to pull one from the J-Yard. Will any similar year model tranny fit (Corolla, whatever) or do I have to use one from a Tercel? -

It's the sound that bothers me. Check timing belt pulleys / idler bearings. Take both aux belts off (alternator and A/C) and see if that squealy noise doesn't go away. I had a tensioner pulley go out last year. I was 40 miles away from my home town. Luckily I was only a few miles away from a Pic-A-Part. Now how would I know there was a Pic-A-Part in the area??? Because I think I know where ALL the junk yards are within a two hundred mile radius from my house, not counting the ones I know in the SanDiego area, which is 378 miles away from here!!!:lol: -
You know the car - $500 87 T-Wag (digi to analogue, crappy 3A/T to FT4WD 5 speed swaps and stuff). You'll recall that I over-heated it last year while climbing the Gapevine in So. Cal. Some time after that I started to notice oil pressure issues. When the engine is cold the oil pressure is fine, idles at about 35 psi and runs at about 60. When it warms up the pressure at idle is about 10 to 15, and on the highway will varry between 30 and 40. I'm thinking oil pump, but I've never had one go out. Is this what they do when they buy the farm??? PS. I know I should have attacked this sooner, but I had to get Red, the $300 94 Alpine Wagon up and running. Then summer hit and it is too damned hot 'round here to spend the day under a hood if you don't have too!!!

What year? Is yours the crappy 3 speed or the better 4 speed auto? I did the crappy 3 speed auto to 5 speed manual swap last year. Love It!!! Now if I can just stop blowing up my car:lol::lol:!!!

Done! Murphy lives!!!

Happy B Day!!!!! -
Whilst I was out of town, the mate broke my car, Murphy, the $500 T-Wag! But it's an easy fix. The coolant hose on the top of the turbo bursteded. Thank God it's the top one and not the little one under the turbo - that one is a PITA to get to!!. Will have Murph up and running in no time.... unless the overheat caused a blown head gasket!!! It is an EA82T after all:lol:!!!

87 GL-10 thudding and stuff
Sonicfrog replied to Prospeeder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Red, the $300 Alpine Legacy, had a broken pressure spring on the clutch. I don't know what sound that made since the car didn't run when I bought it and I replaced the clutch when I dropped the new engine in, but that COULD make that noise. -
An Exciting day at the Junkyard today

Even if I don't find anything to buy I still enjoy mucking around. Yep! I love the J-Yard.
