  1. I posted on this very topic last month, though I know I am definitely NOT the originator of the toothpast idea. Here is my screed, with pics. PS. "Red", the $300 Alpine, is still not done yet:mad:! Been busy with life and stuff.
  2. ZRX, that sounds very likely since subie axles are not very easy to find. I replaced 3 /4 of mine last fall while swapping the crappy 3 speed auto tranny with a five speed, and had to do a lot of hunting to find the axles for the turbo model. Auto parts stores will sell you four wrong parts for Subie before they get you the right one.
  3. Just a shot in the dark. Could be that one of your timing belt may have skipped a tooth, or the passenger side may have broke. That would cause poor running. Hope you can figure it out.
  4. Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, had sagging phneumatic suspension. I swapped the airbags out with the more traditional spring / strut suspension. I used new Monroe struts, springs from an RX on the front, and GL wagon springs in the back. I hear 87 - 89 Honda Accord front springs will work on the back of the second gen GL series, if you want a slightly higher / stiffer ride, but I haven't tried it.... YET!
  5. I think he parked his GL in the lot when he was filming the just ran to school bit, 1:51 min into the vid. On second viewing, it could be an Accord.
  6. Sounds like two problems. Turning thing sounds like Cv joint issue. Loss of power and low oil pressure could be head gasket doing its thing - common on the EA Turbos. Check oil cap and dip stick for milky residue.
  7. I forgot about that label. Mine, 87 MPFI Turbo - 20 deg + - 2.
  8. Oh, it's a turbo, but I'm not sure that matters, if memory serves.
  9. Quick question - what is the recomended timing for the EA82's. I changed the drivers side belt (was scarred due to frozen tensoner pulley last summer) and I never got around to checking the timing. Well, here I am in San Diego, 348 miles away from my crappy non-inductive timing light, and used this as an excuse to buy an inductive one. Well, I also left the Chiltons guide at home too, and I don't remember what the timing should be.
  10. I really apprieciate all the help guys I'm down to do whatever makes sense. Your alot better then these bastards that keep telling me to put better fuel in the car and that will solve my problems. [...] thanks guys. Yeah, well, years of practice!
  11. Make sure you connect the reverse switch and not the neutral switch on the tranny. I was driving home a couple of nights ago and realized my reverse lights were coming on no matter what gear I was in . Oh, and the wire colors may be different on your car, so go by the wire location (1,2) in the diagram.
  12. Last summer the drivers side tensioner pulley froze up on Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag, and I had to make an emergency roadside repair. I was lucky three times over; the belt was a singed but didn't break, I was traveling back home from a spa repair job thus had my tools, and I just happened to be close to a pick-and-pull so I had access to plenty of donor cars. The job was a heck of allot easier since I had ditched the belt covers during the previous head gasket issue. Yesterday I finally got around to replacing the cooked belt, and again, the job was much easier w/o covers.
  13. Agreed. I had a honda once (well twice, but the problem was with the first car, a 76 civic) that had problems because a mechanic put champion plugs in it.
  14. No it's not running abnormally hot it stay right in the middle temp range and doesn't move. I didn't see what car or engine you have, but on Subaru's I've owned the needle was always 1/8 to 1/4 on the gauge. With the bad radiator Murph's temp was at 1/2, and would only run hotter if I was going up hill, like on the Grapevine. But there is no question the poor flow rate of the radiator was causing me fuel mixture (and milage) grief.
  15. How hot does the car get, according to the temp gauge? If it's running hot, that can definitely cause a rich mixture. You've replaced many parts of the cooling system, but I notice you haven't replaced the radiator. A crappy radiator caused all kinds of grief with Murphy, the $500 87 T-Wag. Failed smog (rich mixture), was blowing hoses left and right. The last straw, last summer, was blowing a head gasket in the middle of the Grapevine on my way back to Fresno from San Diego.... on a 100 degree day.... with my Mom in the car. I still haven't told my little brother about it as he will give me no end of grief about it.
  16. ....even in the cold morning if u turn the car on and drive 1 block maybe about 1/4 mile or less the car is already fully heated up. like within 1 min of starting the car. How is the excelleration? Does it sound kinda like a jet at high speed? (some may know where I'm going with this).
  17. Right now I'm just a lowly sub! But I will be teaching social science and what not. Because it's linear and math teachers are sooooo in demand, I would love to teach math if I can get better at it.
  18. WOO HOO!!! Engines Here! Time To Start Wrenching..... after lunch!
  19. I don't know where I read it (could have been on USMB) but I read that old fashioned white toothpaste works great for just this problem. I'm at the house waiting for the engine to get delivered, and thought I'd give it a whirl. Here are the results of just a few minutes of polishing. Driver's side - no toothpaste. Passenger side - Smile!
  20. Those buckets remind me of the ones out of an old accord.
  21. Ooooh! I'm rebuilding "Red" the $300 94 Legacy Alpine, and I was going to post on the same issue with the headlight lenses.
